Noonan: Reagan Commemoration Driving Media Nuts
NewsMax.com ^ | 07 June 2004 | Staff Reports

Posted on 06/06/2004 9:47:26 PM PDT by txradioguy

Reporters who regularly slammed Ronald Reagan while he was president are quietly seething now that they're forced to mouth platitudes about the man's greatness, former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan said Sunday night.

"[Journalists] are willing, over the next few days, to concede what is so obvious that they have to concede it - his personal goodness, etc.," Noonan told Matt Drudge on his radio show.

But with a solid week of commemorations for the conservative icon still ahead, liberal reporters will barely be able to contain themselves, she predicted.

"I'll bet they start pulling a few political [stunts] - kind of letting their biases out a little bit more. And I'll tell you, there's going to be an explosion next weekend [after Reagan is buried].

"That will mean that the elite journalistic media will have gone through seven days of talking kindly about Reagan," said Noonan. "I would say that by next Friday night, they're going to blow."

Rather gave rather a good summary on R when CBS broke into the golf coverage on Saturday. However, CBS then went to some a*hole named Herb Bowen in LA, who couldn't wait until after the funeral to go negative on R's career.

Thank you for sharing your insights from the past. This is for you, as I'm sure this man would be very proud of the breakthrough you and your husband have experienced:

Only *myself* is "man" enough to admit it. Husband, well he's a guy. But he is more virulently conservative nowadays than me. We have a grand time talking politics and idiots, never once mentioning how we were once idiots. Except for this Reagan thing and even then my husband tries to couch it as "different times". Heh. I knew he didn't like Reagan because *I* didn't like Reagan and even though we didn't know each other during the Reagan presidency, I knew how he thought.

We both, you should smile, voted for George McGovern.

Now, we are the smartest and wisest and no victim of anyone's spin.

What made us see the light?

No one particular thing but I can name some highlights. For me, Bill Clinton was the key. Until Clinton, I thought the Democrats were always for the little guy. When I started hearing about Clinton's shenanigans, and saw, to my horror, the rest of my beloved Democrats defending him, well my thought process turned.

Although, you should smile again, I voted for Ross Perot because, hey, there was no Free Republic at the time and Rush Limbaugh was unknown to me. Much less Fox News. Now I realize Perot and Clinton were buddies scheming to fool nice, well-meaning soccer Moms like myself.

I was married to my husband during the Clinton years and every second of that man's presidency we were filled with despair. Not quite ready to turn ourselves into right-wing demogogues, as we called them, we simply sat out the election with Bob Dole. Now, with some chagrin, my husband says that was one of the dumbest things we ever did. "There was nothing wrong with Bob Dole," he'll say, regretting always that one vote HE cast for Bill Clinton.

I don't like to be fooled. Hey, there's probably a lot of soccer Mom types out there that don't even know they're being fooled. I'm a little more sympathetic than perhaps most conservatives.

Also we are well-educated, university types and had that snob thing going on about being above it all. HE went to the University of Wisconsin, myself to the University of Maryland. HE lived in Massachusetts for 15 years and yes, finally he moved because he simply couldn't stand the state.

Last year we BOTH moved away from Merryland because that state has gone to hell in a hand basket.

Hey, we're home owners and citizens. We pay taxes and now those same liberals that we both once were keep reaching their hands into our pockets to give to their supporters that they remain in power.

And finally, September 11. Although by then we were converted, devout Rush Limbaugh fans and always with Fox news upon the telly. Bill Clinton. Give him the credit. I began to read. And listen. And was appalled at what the Democrats had become. Hey, at one time I even voted for Ralph Nader and considered him my hero! I'm not proud of it but at least I understand it.

How anyone cannot see that the attack on our soil CHANGED EVERYTHING, is beyond me. But the liberals lied and succeeded with their lies for so long that they are entrenched.

It's positively scarey.

Dan is a bit of an emotional flake. I'm frankly surprised that he doesn't tear up every time he is on the air.

Rather gets all teary-eyed when his favorite flavor of ramen noodles runs out before he can make lunch.

Rather tears up when Kenneth won't tell him the frequency.

And I know how an idealology can blind you to reality.

One of Sir SuziQ's favorite sayings when he's talking about liberals is "You don't need a reason, when you've got an ideology!"

self-fulfilling prophecy or description of reality?

I personally think more of an emotional and a steeling boost to W if they try that. Can you picture the "silent majority"'s reaction if all of a sudden they start picking on Reagan after he is dead? To me that would put them right up there with Col. Momar in the no class department.

I was flipping around the channels, came across CNN, what a mistake. I could only watch for 30 seconds, the entire time I watched, EVERY single item they spoke of regarding President Reagan, was negative. I never watch that channel. Every time I do, I biet a bar of soap as punishment.

A heads up for people, don't go to DU, those wonderful compassionate heartwarming worms have posted some of the most vile comments I have ever seen. I am so proud to be a republican.

Fair question.

President Eisenhower's death didn't get a banner headline. But there were two articles about him on the New York Times' March 28, 1969 front page.

http://amres-pics.com/p_asp/n346d.asp

I couldn't find any online pictures of the New York Times' front pages on the day after the deaths of Presidents Hoover (10/21/64), Truman (12/27/72), Johnson (1/23/73), or Nixon (4/23/94).

No one is discussing it, but I thought Reagan's acceptance speech at the 1980 Republican Convention was his greatest speech.

Let foe and friend alike be aware of this: The United States of America has an obligation to its citizens and the peoples of the free world to never let those who would destroy freedom dictate the future course of human life on this planet.

I have been waiting for someone on the left to claim that the Republicans are using the Reagan memorials for a campaign rally. I have already seen a great deal of evidence that the Reagan tributes are paining the left, the Seattle paper ended every article with a reference to the failure of Reagan's second term due to the Iran Contra affair. The MSNBC talk show host (the one that used to be a sports announcer) asked some staffer from the Reagan days about the reports that Reagan was disengaged in meetings, under the influence of more powerful, more intellectual men, similar to George Bush. Of course the staffer said that was one of the more egregious lies that were thrown at Reagan and completely untrue. The talking head was visibly upset with the answer.

I think my hubby also rues the day he voted for Ross Perot in '92. He has voted for the R candidate in the last two elections and he overwhelmingly prefers GWB over Kerry for the next one. My son will vote for the first time this year too - for GWB of course.

Grrrr! Donaldson isn't just a picknose, but a picknose with a cheap hairhat.

He's about as small, petty and vindictive that as self-congratulatory and nauseatingly faux pious Jimmy Carter (who got his ass kicked by a killer bunny).

Correction--the G-8 Summit is taking place at Sea Island, GA about 60 miles south of Savannah not in Atlanta.

Thanks for the correction.

Or, tears of pleasure that he has passed. On the other hand, it could be pain because it is putting their trash-mouthing off schedule. Reagan's passing is messing up their Bush/America bashing.

Someone said last night that Dan Rather was tearing up talking about Pres. Reagan. I think it was more that he was in pain having to say something nice about the man instead of any real heartfelt emotion.

I don't think so. Dan is a bit of an emotional flake. I'm frankly surprised that he doesn't tear up every time he is on the air.

I agree. Although I didn't see this, I don't question Rather's sincerity. His sanity, however, is another matter entirely.

I had to stop watching Dan altogether many years ago. It wasn't so much because of his elitist media bias, but because he was creeping me out! (I bailed about the time he was wearing those big, heavy sweaters, and intoning, "Courage!" at the end of his broadcast for no discernible reason.

Noonan has not heard PBS---they are trashing President Reagan in every way they can. This is from the lead story on their website:

"As the nation's 40th president from 1981-89, Reagan oversaw an economic recovery, the largest military buildup in history, a massive tax cut, reduction in spending on domestic programs, and record budget deficits."

And the "fair and objective" NPR radio this morning there were three "experts" assembled all liberals who hated everything that Reagan did - the dismantling of government programs, the brinksmanship, the huge deficits, ad nauseum. All lies and no substance.

Last night Peggy Noonan was on MSNBC with Chris Matthews. He indicated that they would discuss something Peggy said right after the commercial. Chris said "you used to say that Ronald Reagan never made a decision without thinking about how John Wayne would handle the situation" (I'm paraphrasing here, badly). Anyway, Peggy said that she never said that. Chris insisted that she did say it. She said again that she never said it. They went to a commercial and she wasn't with him when he returned. I fell asleep shortly after that and don't know if she was on again or walked off mad. But, I do know she wasn't on immediately after the commerical. I hope she walked off the set!

Well! I hope (and trust) your account is accurate. Matthews has been completely unhinged lately and nothing would please me more than to think Peggy Noonan walked off of his set.

Pinging red to this story.

"That will mean that the elite journalistic media will have gone through seven days of talking kindly about Reagan," said Noonan. "I would say that by next Friday night, they're going to blow."

My response?

Bring it on.

Every slight, every mocking tone, every attempt to smear President Reagan is going to motivate the "base" that supported him to a fevered pitch.

And then there will be the tribute at the Republican Convention.....I've noticed nobody seems to have realized yet just how emotional the RNC Convention will now be, in New York City, in a couple of months.

And I will be very very surprised if Nancy Reagan isn't given a prime time slot to address the convention.

The leftwing learned to fear not just Reagan, but the Reaganites. The Reaganites are about to get their chance to ride again, courtesy of the leftwing media, folks.

Ronald Reagan is about to perform his final service for his party, his country, and all of us that understand just how important he was in this nations darkest hour since December of 1941, when Communism was on the offensive across the globe. When Democrats believed our best days had long since past. When our economy was in a shabbles and deteriorating with each passing month.

When we as a people lost faith in ourselves.....

This weekend the "institutional memory" of our nation was stirred. Ronald Reagan, in death, forces the media to recall what was happening in 1981...and what happened over the course of the next eight years. It will bring a new perspective to what we face today in the war on terror.

And I strongly suspect Ronald Wilson Reagan wouldn't have it any other way. If in death he serves to remind us of who we are, what we have done, and what we can do in the future....yeah, the Gipper would appreciate it.

Both of your posts give good insight. Thanks.

You are certainly welcome but yet again thoughts pop into my head. I don't want to make a nuisance of myself but these past two nights I've been wracking my brain to understand why I didn't like Reagan beyond my university snobbism, my committment to the feminazi movement and the liberal ideology I found so gosh darn cool. I ponder why do those traits I so admire in the current President eluded me with Ronald Reagan. So I listen to Rush today and more thoughts come to my head.

I do recall greatly disliking Jimmy Carter, give me credit for this. Though at the time I never had a clue that Jimmy Carter's failure was his liberalism run amok. But hoo boy, I remember the gas lines, the exorbitant interest rates, those idiots taking our hostages. At the time I was a single woman, early thirties, happening, pretty, career gal, lots of boyfriends and an ex-husband or two. I had friends desperately trying to buy a house with 16% interest rates. The gas lines like to kill me. And the horror of having foreigners capture our citizens and keep them for a year demoralized me. Yeah, I was a bit aware and I do distinctly recall disliking Jimmy Carter. In retrospect and with my newfound wisdom I know that Carter's presidency is what happens when liberals have all the power.

In fact I might have voted for Reagan though I admit I do not recall. I've voted in every election except the Dole election so I must have voted for someone and I can't imagine I voted for Jimmy Carter, the jerk. At least my young beautiful and happening self had an inkling of a clue.

Some more thoughts about Reagan come to me as I remember my disdain of his "trickle down" economics. My thought was the this "emperor" was allowing us peons to eat cake. OR maybe it was the liberal media making me think like this. There was also the ridicule of the Star Wars plan. Again, I remember thinking that was an idiotic waste of money. I simply had no idea that it was the arms race that was causing the collapse of the Soviet Union. The liberal pundits spoke to me and I bought into it.

I also recall thinking that Ronald Reagan at that time was suffering from the beginnings of his Alzenheimers only at that time it was depicted, in a snickering manner by the liberal pundits and I snickered right along, as "forgetfulness". I distinctly remember being somewhat comforted by the "fact", as I perceived it, that the Reagan presidency was really a committee affair. I don't know where I got this notion but it's how I thought. And I certainly never gave the man any credit for ANYTHING. Although plainly Iran gave up those hostages on his inauguration day, the economy did bounce right back, and the Soviet Union did collapse under his watch. In fact, I worked for an accounting firm at the time and I recall the eighties as being a frenzied money making period. Reagan did this with his tax cuts and economic policies but that thought never entered my head.

Anyway, I wish I had given him the credit that he deserved. Instead I was cool, hip, educated and disdainful that a former actor for God's sake, thought he could be a great President.

Turns out that he was. Hats off to you Ronnie, and God Bless America.
