I was just told there's a supply depot there.
Maybe that's it.
Lots and lots of military convoys come this way from there.
We pass them coming and going up/down I70 all the time.

We get our trike bodies from Class Glass so I've seen the rail hub many times.
[that whole area is metamorphosing into a tourist trap]....LOL!

Tourist trap, hell. They should be so lucky. That town has sunk into an economic black hole. Been there for 25 years, which is why, as much as it will always be home, is the reason why I'm in Alabama. I'd move back in a heartbeat if there was enough of an infrastructure to make a living off of. God knows, it's a beautiful place, and one of the few remaining Normal Rockwell-esque small towns left. 20 years ago, my friends and I used to joke that Cumberland was stuck in a time warp.

In hindsight, that's not such a bad thing.

BULLETIN - JUST GOT AN E-MAIL FROM GOOD OL' MOM FROM WEST SIDE CUMBERLAND:

OK...... here's the scoop. Jim Van just reported it on WTBO. The train was bound from Chicago to Washington DC. Passengers became alarmed over suspicious actions of two men of middle eastern decent and the train was stopped here and the men removed and taken to police headquarters and the train was moved to a more remote location which I guess was the Mexico Farms area. The train was checked for explosives but none were found and the investigation is ongoing and is being handled by the FBI thru the state police . So I guess the train will stay where it is for now.If I hear anything more I'll let you know. This is XXXXX XXXXXXX reporting for Cumberland local news!!!! And people think nothing exciting ever happens here! LOL

CUMBERLAND, Md. -- An Amtrak train on its way to Washington was stopped Sunday in western Maryland after someone reported suspicious men on board, officials said.

Barry Maddox, a representative with the FBI's Baltimore field office, said members of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force were investigating reports of "suspicious males of Middle Eastern descent." But Maddox said the exact number of suspicious men was unclear and details were sketchy.

About 200 people were ordered off train number 30, while police brought dogs to search the train, which was diverted to a CSX yard in Cumberland, said Amtrak representative Dan Stessel.

The train left Chicago on Saturday night, Stessel said, and was stopped shortly before noon Sunday.

Amtrak requested that buses be brought to Cumberland and said passengers would be taken to their destinations. Stessel said passengers were only allowed to take medication off the train; everything else would be released once the investigation was over.

Cumberland police declined to answer questions about the incident; state police officials had no immediate information.

Stessel said it was unclear whether passengers or staff reported the men, or what the men were doing to make them appear suspicious.

He said police knew who the men were, but had no other details.

Stessel said trains are stopped because of similar reports about once a week. After an anonymous threat, Amtrak police stopped and searched three trains in Maryland in late May, including two Acela Express high-speed trains traveling from New York to Washington. Stessel said nothing unusual was found on those trains.

I was at a local beer/wine/liquor store yesterday (there's just a single county precinct where it can be sold here), and some middle-eastern men came in. I was at the checkout, and the large TV set at the checkout was on Fox News Channel (another reason I shop there). The men came in going full speed ahead to make there purchases, stopped short when they saw the TV, and just stood and stared.

When I exited the store with my purchases, I noticed they were in a tiny economy car and that in addition to the three who had come in, there were 3 more in the car! These were big guys in a tiny car in 95 degree heat in Texas! These guys do themselves a disservice by just being strange from the get-go.

Did you get their license number? That sounds strange, especially in this day and time. They should realize that people are going to be suspicious because we don't know them.

What is significant about June 11? I feel silly for asking, but have not been able to figure it out. I;m sure I will feel worse after hearing the answer. I love to ride the trains.
Thanks

I was on this train, and I can certainly say, there was more than the media is reporting. When the conductor comes up to the group your standing with and, when pressed, says "this is the real thing...the dogs found items of suspicion" and states he isn't going to go back on that train, something is amiss. The security on the train sucked...they never even looked at or took my ticket, asked me for ID, or did anything with my baggage.

Thank you for the first-hand report. This is a little unnerving. The power of the internet is demonstrated everytime the TRUTH escapes from the clutches of the media.

Fort Hill, Alco, or Bishop Walsh??

I know some engineers and yardmasters up there who say that they took evidence from the train. Could be railroader rumors though.
