GRAND BLANC - Bringing flags bearing the Confederate insignia to school could cost two Grand Blanc High School seniors their diplomas.
School administrators met Thursday to determine the fates of the two students and a third who was involved in an altercation sparked by the flags. School officials wouldn't announce the outcome of the meeting.
The Confederate flag has sparked a heated debate at the school about whether it's simply a symbol of the South or one of racial discrimination and slavery.
The two students who brought the flags to school Wednesday said there's nothing racist about the Confederate flag. They said it represents Southern pride, among other things, although one of the students said he wanted to apologize to peers who were offended.

BTTT!
In 1956? Read some history. Reconciliation had been effected by the time of the Spanish-American war. Look up General "Fighting Joe" Wheeler, the Confederate general who later commanded Black "Buffalo Soldier" troops in Cuba.
Died in Brooklyn by the way.
"...but the cold, hard facts of life are that the Confederate battle-flag symbol and Osama Bin Laden are well-grounded in anti-Americanism!"
And what are you besides ignorant and hostile?
If the issue was real, then flying the Confederate Flag should have as much animosity as the battle flag. If those kids would have flown the CSA flag, NO ONE would have known where it was from and they would be graduating. The battle flag is just another symbol of the battle between federalism and statism (sp?). Lee did not want to fight against his beloved Virginia, and no one knows the difference today. Historically we are blind.
DK
Well what on earth were you doing in Indiana at a time when the South needed ya ?
Disgraceful positively disgraceful.
A process was started numerous times.
I love the photo, BTW, there are far too many people in
America today who believe there is something that protects them from being offended in the documents that founded this country. (I have not been able to find them.) I have three words for those who are offended by a flag of great historical significance: Get Over IT. Fly your rainbow flag, (it often offends me), and I will have to get over it too.
including 40% of the state's blacks...
That's right.
Damn I hate the bad raps.
The flag is history,
a proud history.
Funny story WD. While attending High School in Alabama (early/mid 70's), we had these 4 or 5 guys that every once in a while would come roaring down the street by the school, with a CBF hanging out the window of their car. Alongside that flag would be someones ass hanging out also - and with the horn honking to make sure they had everybodys attention. We'd all laugh and get a kick out of it. Now mind you - our HS had a total population of 800 students.
500 who were black.
No riots, no ACLU, no diversification training seminars, no cops, no lockdowns - nothing.
Now that I've left Nashville and relocated to 'Bama, I've noticed the respect between everybody. Almost all folks address each other with, 'Yes Sir. Yes Ma'am. I was stunned - and heartened - to see the home state where I was raised seemingly hadn't changed much in the 28 years since I left.
I'm equally stunned by the nosey, interloping busybodies who constantly imply that racism is indigenous to the South. And that it's because of our forefathers, our heritage and our Flag. And that our brothers to the North have eradicated racial discontent and ill-will.
Of course - I just found this a few minutes ago
"The five states with the highest numbers of hate crime were: California (1,648 incidents, 22.1 percent of total reported incidents), New York (693, 9.3 percent), New Jersey (570, 7.6 percent), Massachusetts (430, 5.8 percent), and Michigan (416, 5.6 percent). These five states comprise 44.7 percent of all incidents reported in the United States."
I'm sure that other States (including Southern) are listed in the FBI report, but I can't find the actual report (was s'posed to be filed November 2003). But I don't remember these states being part of the Confederacy.
I wonder what banner they fly. I wonder if those "offended" remember that slavery existed under the "Stars N Bars" long before it existed under the CBF.
"It wasn't an issue, until the NAACP and other liberals needed an issue to divide us."
Bump. That is the truth that needs to be shouted from the rooftops.
I want some of what you are smoking, or the Kool-Aid you've been drinking, it must be potent stuff and I need a diversion.
"Look up General "Fighting Joe" Wheeler, the Confederate general who later commanded Black "Buffalo Soldier" troops in Cuba."
Who shouted to his troops as the Spanish retreated: "Come on boys, weve got the Yankees on the run!". (I love it!)
City folks never got it, they never will.
MOLON LABE
Nope. And they - the Gods upon Mount Olympus, presume to tell us - the poor, wretched racists that we are, how to live our lives.
It's rather comical that on some of these threads we have some who say, "Hey - if you don't like it, leave!". But I'll guaran-damn-tee you that if that were tried again - they'd protest that, "the Union must be saved".
