The shock resignation of CIA Director George Tenet Thursday morning comes just days before the release of a devastating report on the CIA's inaccurate assessment that Iraq had stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction before the war.
"Apparently there is a prewar intelligence report that is about to be released to the public compiled by the Senate Intelligence Committee," reports ABC News.
"We're being told that this report is devastating to George Tenet."
The report "relates to some of the prewar intelligence and some of the advice that Tenet gave to the president and to others in the administration in the lead-up to the Iraqi war."
According to Bob Woodward's recent book, "Plan of Attack," when Bush first expressed doubts about the quality prewar WMD intelligence, Tenet reportedly told him the evidence he had was "a slam dunk."
While no Iraqi WMD stockpiles have been uncovered, the Pentagon confirmed last week that at least one shell of Iraqi munitions contained the deadly nerve agent Sarin.
I have a bad feeling about Bush's Eruopeeon trip.
Mr. Bush announced the resignation in a way that was almost bizarre. He had just addressed reporters and photographers in a fairly innocuous Rose Garden session with Australia's prime minister, John Howard. Then the session was adjourned, as Mr. Bush apparently prepared to depart for nearby Andrews Air Force Base and his flight to Europe, where he is to take part in ceremonies marking the 60th anniversary of the Normady invasion and meet European leaders some of whom have been sharply critical of the campaign in Iraq.
But minutes later, Mr. Bush reappeared on the sun-drenched White House lawn, stunning listeners with the news of Mr. Tenet's resignation, which the president said would be effective in mid-July. After that, Mr. Bush said, the C.I.A.'s deputy director, John McLaughlin, will be acting director.
I looked on the ABC News site; there is nothing there that remotely comes close to this story.
This whole thread is about an unsubstantiated story by NewsMax.
Which one?...:-)
No doubt!
OMG!
What next, Joe?
Immigration tied to Tenet's resignation?
This one.
It's nowhere to be found on the internet, except on NewsMax.
Since when did the Director of CIA become a Civil Servant job?
Where did I even mention Tenet?
Sorry. I was being sarcastic about unsubstantiated stories by NewsMax.
OMG..is Tenet Hispanic?
Oh, I'm sorry too.......I'm doing about four things at one time!
I see that...:-) You're fresh from the other thread too. Or, are you still doing battle there?...:-)
LOL!
Too funny.

Makes you wonder if he got the resignation right after the press conference. But then he wouldn't have had McLaughlin's name decided in ten minutes. Probably wanted to get it over with today so he could be out of town away from the fray, but didn't want to overshadow his meeting with the Prime Minister.
There are only so many positions a president can "fire"........and Clinton was kind enough before he left office to make most of his political appointees civil servants; you cannot just up and fire a CS. Ashcroft even went to Congress to get permission to fire some of them, but they, of course, said no; they could only move them laterally.
So instead of answering his question about why Tenet was not replaced by President Bush you talk about the difficulty of terminating people with civil service jobs.
So, the question remains on the table. Why did Bush leave Clinton Appointees heading our most important National Security Agency?
I am happy to see Tenet go but I have always wondered why he was left on board after 1/20/04.

Clinton fired all the attorneys genereal, who are required by law to submit their regisnations to the incoming administration; nobody before had ever accepted them ALL.
I answered his question about Clinton appointees. I wasn't discussing Tenet.
O.K. but do feel the President should have fired Tenet in January of 2001?
LOL !
a thousand pardons for the language.....
