Ok, that makes me feel better.
You know, 2 weeks ago I went to an oral surgeon, one I had never been to before. They made me fill out the usual paperwork and I left the ss# and birthdate areas -- among a few other areas -- blank. They asked about it and I said I would not give them that unecessary info; it wasn't relevent.
We went back and forth politely but strenuously. They said that they needed the ss# unless I paid cash and they needed the birthdate in case I needed a prescription. I said I didn't want any prescriptions and I intended to pay via credit card, not cash. They repeated that if I paid via credit card or check, they required the ss#. I repeated that I did not want to offer up my ss# and I did not intend to pay via cash. They said, well, then perhaps I should reschedule my appointment for another day (after I had already waited more than 2 weeks...) and brin gin cash. They were nice but firm.
I said I never ever want to pay an oral surgeon in cash (it was just the point of it by that point!), so in exasperation, I wrote down an inaccurate ss#. And I was peeved having to do that.
Maybe when a few Muslim-garbed terrorists strike us here with concealed weapons we'll get smart.
Mom always told me cold, tepid at least, she said they thrive in hot -shrug-

BTW, I have a very talented co-worker who supervised the underground tests in Nevada. He worked out a mathematical formula for predicting the yield of a weapon and the emitted waveforms upon detonation. He was pleased as could be when his model predicted the precise waveforms within 1% accuracy of the actual test detonation.
Another co-worker on the floor (Mark Watson) grew up in a household where Edward Teller was a frequent dinner guest.
Working with these guys was enjoyable. They are brilliant and temperamental. Most a excellent mathematicians and physicists. They are NOT good computer scientists. That was my responsibility. Now their ideas reside in an SEI Level 3 certified process.

My wife's dad is a math genius. Ought to be with a Ph.d in nuclear physics. He's pretty tempermental, too. But I think that's 'cause he's just an ornery cuss in his old age (80). I think when he was young, flying with Blackburns Irregulars and the Blacksheep in the pacific, he was cold as ice and calm as a mountain lake. 17 kills proves it, I think. A triple ace, plus. You should see the DFC Award he got after jumping over 40 zeros by himself, shooting down eight in the first ten minutes until help arrived. Truly the greatest generation.
