After displaying a painting of U.S. soldiers torturing Iraqi prisoners, a San Francisco gallery owner bears a painful reminder of the nations unresolved anguish over the incidents at Abu Ghraib -- a black eye and bloodied brow delivered by an unknown assailant who apparently objected to the art work.

The assault outside the Capobianco gallery in the citys North Beach district Thursday night was the worst, but only the latest in a string of verbal and physical attacks that have directed at owner Lori Haigh since the painting, titled "Abuse," was installed there on May 16.

I still have a tough time believing Ms. Haigh's story. It smacks of opportunism against a guy who because of other misconduct could be taken.

In the CNN interview, she claimed to have witnesses to the good father's directing her to have an abortion. So, either she had witnesses or she didn't.

Right. Lenihan told her to have an abortion in front of witnesses. Uh huh. You believe that?

Black Eye

Overview

A black eye is a relatively common result of some injury to the face or the head. A black eye is caused when blood and other fluids collect in the space around the eye. Swelling and dark discoloration result—hence, the name "black eye."

Most black eyes are relatively minor injuries. Many black eyes heal on their own in a few days. Sometimes, they signify a more serious injury.

Despite the name, "black eye," the eye itself is not usually injured. The tissues around the eye may be significantly discolored and swollen without any injury to the eye itself. Think of it as a bruise around the eye.

Like a bruise, as a black eye heals, the swelling around the eye decreases, and the bruise gradually fades away. The skin around the eye is very loose, with mostly fat underneath it. This makes it an ideal site for fluid to accumulate. The effects of gravity also help to swell this part of the face. This is why many people wake up with "puffy" eyes in the morning.

When there is an injury to the face, the skin around the eye is one of the first places to swell. Depending on the location and type of injury, one or both eyes may be affected. Last updated: May 27, 2004

Not unless she produces the witnesses. In that case, I'd then have to decide if they are credible. Of course, if she fails to produce the witnesses, then I'd judge her less credible than if she never claimed to have them.

Yes, you are correct, this situation reminds me of the spring break sluts here in Florida getting naked in public, and drunk, then compalining about being groped . Hilarious!

Yes, very few of us have any patience for treasonous parasites like this woman. I take it you object to the treatment she received? She was warned numerous times before this final attack, I believe.

I'm a nurse; I find it hard to believe that she'd have this much bruising without swelling. The picture isn't that old either because the bruise is still purple (they turn yellow-y after a few days), although she's already got a scabby nose.

In the thumbnails there's a picture of her with a bandage on. You can't see her affected eye, but you can see a scabby spot under her bandage. No swelling visible here either. I don't know how old this picture is either, but I don't know that you'd have a big scab like that. If she went to the doctor and had it treated, they'd treat the scrapes like road rash and put bacitracin (greasy antibiotic ointment) on it. You wouldn't get a big scab like that.

If the story is accurate, she forfeits any claim to membership of the fairer sex when she aligns herself with such provocative political statements. The only reason this never happened to Jane Fonda is due to her wealth and celebrity status. It was much more difficult to get close enough to punch her lights out.

Not just that- the SF Chron is part of the fraud.

The staging of the photo puts the piece of "art" in the frame but has her "injury" shaded and not featured. It would have been easy to have her turn so that the "black eye" was front to the lens. Greater effect, right?

These bolshevik liars are diabolical. The reporter and photographer are part of the sham.

No swelling. No red areas in eye. No curiosity on the part of the reporter. No police report. Poorly framed shots by the photographers. (Look at the 2 photos provided in the Chronicle story which is linked up top. Compare them.)

The enemy is amongst us. Beware and be on guard.

WILL NO ONE RID US OF THESE MEDDLESOME BOLSHEVIKS?

Sounds eminently reasonable, cw. I don't know whether the criminal complaint against Lenihan ever went to trial. All I know at this point is that he went to arraignment and posted bail. Couldn't find any further cites to this case or news about it.

But even if her witnesses perform well under oath, defense is going to ask the jurors over and over and over: Why on earth would a man who wants to hush something up insist on a cover-up in front of witnesses???

Can you think of a reasonable explanation for that? I can't. And I've really ransacked my brain trying to do that. I have to admit defeat. Help me out here. Lenihan was bright enough to become a priest. And if he did everything Haigh has accused him of, then he was bright enough to control her and keep her quiet through several years of abuse -- abuse he was smart enough to not get caught perpetrating. How is it that he suddenly became a moron when telling her to abort the child?

I thought those pictures were too offensive for human viewing, thought we could not tolerate such activity in an American-run prison, silly me.

Did Maplethorpe decided to sign the Abu G. photos afterall & make them acceptable as art?

It was over the phone. Presumably, he wasn't aware that her friends were on the extensions, soaking up every word. Kind of like those cases where the cops gather evidence by having someone the suspect trusts wear a wire and get him to run at the mouth.

Obviously, he should have insisted on a meeting in person. And no doubt should have felt her up thoroughly, if for no other reason than to make sure she wasn't wearing a wire (wires in 1982 being bulkier than today).

I'm in one of those dramatic moods tonight, cw, so indulge me in a dramatization...
Defense Counsel [to jury at summation -- paces thoughtfully in front of jury, halts, spins around toward the jurors]: "A Roman Catholic priest tells an underage girl to go get an abortion in front of witnesses. Let me repeat that. A Roman Catholic priest tells an underage girl to go get an abortion -- and says this in front... of... witnesses!

    "Happens every day, I'm sure.

"What will this priest tell her next -- in front of witnesses? To desecrate the sacrament? Blaspheme the Holy Ghost?

"Father Lenihan is depending on your good common sense today. He is depending on you to ask yourselves if this account you've heard makes sense. I'm confident that his trust in your good judgment is well-placed."
