On April 29, 2004, as a service and tribute to members of the World War II Generation, the National World War II Memorial opened for public viewing, exactly one month prior to the formal Dedication Ceremony taking place May 29, 2004. The World War II Memorial is the first national memorial dedicated to all who served during the Second World War. The memorial, established by the American Battle Monuments Commission, honors all military veterans of the war, the citizens on the home front, the nation at large, and the high moral purpose and idealism that motivated the nation's call to arms. The Second World War is the only 20th-century event commemorated on the Mall's central axis. (from www.wwiimemorial.com)
Don't forget that you can watch the dedication today!! God Bless all of our Veterans & Active Duty!!! |

Hey there. Welcome to the Canteen. You can usually find some one here 24/7. We keep some unusual hours Thank you! That should work out well as I keep some pretty unusual hours myself (especially on holiday weekends! LOL). Anyway, I really appreciate all the friendship you have all shown me. I feel at home. Thanks again.

How do I order your new Grillin' cookbook?
There's a link directly to the book (Lazy About Grilling) on Amazon on my FReep page. Just click on the book cover.
Now for the caveats:
The book is NOT out-of-print; however, Amazon doesn't show having any new copies. There are links on Amazon for used copies. If you order a used one, make sure it has the new title/cover. (Parts of the book were originally published under the title of Master the Grill The Lazy Way. I've seen examples of individual booksellers trying to pass off the old version as the new one.)
That book's had quite a history. Right after Master the Grill The Lazy Way came out, that publisher sold off part of their company and the terms of that sales agreement were that they wouldn't reprint any of their cookbook titles. So, once the first printing of the book sold out, the copyright reverted back to me.
A couple of years later, my agent negotiated terms with a new publisher. I completely revised the book, and expanded it by adding several chapters. Then, THE MONTH Lazy About Grilling came out, that publisher merged with another, so the book got lost in the shuffle for awhile and didn't make it to the distributor for awhile. There have been distributor problems with the book since then. The publisher evidently prefers to treat it as an unwanted stepchild or something. Very frustrating.
Somebody else in the Canteen asked me about the book earlier in the week, which was when I checked and discovered that Amazon didn't show having any new copies of it in stock ... AGAIN! ... I tried to contact the publisher, but the e-mail I have for my contact there is no longer valid. ... Trying to make a long story less long (because it's too late to make it short), I'm going to call the publisher next week and see if I can get some copies to sell directly and/or get the distributor thing straightened out ... AGAIN! (I know from past experience that it's impossible to get things resolved during the week before a holiday weekend, which is why I decided to wait until next week. I'm pretty sure that next week is the Chicago Book Expo, which may mean that I'll have trouble getting things resolved next week, too, but I'm gonna try! ... FYI trivia about why I "think" I remember the Book Expo dates correctly: Another publisher wanted me to attend the book expo this year, but I wasn't able to coordinate it with everything else.)
Sorry things are so confusing. (It isn't easy being a non-famous author.) ;)

You're so very welcome!
Maine is incredibly beautiful, but the winters can be cruel!
it is not as cold here, as some places..
But winter lasts a VERY long time (Oct-April)....
The lasts few weeks of winter are sub-zero, sometimes...
Still, there are only 1.5 million in the entire state..most nice!
Hope you love it here (The Canteen)..I sure do!

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us, a time to reflect on all those who have served our country over the years, who have faced the efforts and sacrifices in order to keep our country free.
To all the men and women who have so gallantly served our country, and who serve now, a heart-felt
In this household, as I'm sure it is in MANY others, every day is Memorial Day.

I haven't had time to be around much, but I wanted to wish everyone a very happy Memorial Day.
To all my brothers and sisters in the military,
Thank you for your service.
Here is a video I've put together to celebrate this day:

Hi, Kat!
My eyelids are being held up by sixteen penny nails.
I wanted to get that video finished.
I've still got some things to do before I'll be ready to move.
Depending on my work load, I figure in about two months I'll be there.
Good to see you, sweet lady.
Now I gotta say, "Goodnight"!

But winter lasts a VERY long time (Oct-April).... I have to laugh at myself because the first thing I thought was to complain that here in St. Louis, between October and April most of the time it is under 60 degrees. I mean, that's cold, right? But then I thought that for Maine, maybe I need to rethink my benchmarks. I am no candidate for the Polar Bear Club, so maybe we'll be visiting in July. :)
To: TexasCowboy
WOW!!!!! Absolutely awesome, TC!!!!
I had to download it to my HD to get it to play properly but it was WELL worth the wait. Well done!
Dang, I wish I had the time to learn how to put things like that together. Like you, I haven't had much free time lately to come to the Canteen....I'm sure glad I was here tonight when you posted this masterpiece. What a wonderful gift for our military folks you created.
A happy Memorial Day Weekend to you! And next time you see that sweet Termite (I won't say "lil Termite" because he's growin' like a weed! *giggle*), please give him an extra hug and tell 'im it's from me. :-)

AAAAAAAAAAGH!!! My computer's going bonkers on me.....I've lost count of how many times I've rebooted now. One more time, I'll try to make a post about yesterday's "mission". A mission that was an absolute pleasure. No, the word "thrill" better describes it.
After an extended wait, the folks in Tullahoma (about 7 miles from here) had the joy of greeting their loved ones as they returned from their deployment to Iraq!! WOOOOHOOOOO!! One of our local National Guard Motor Transport units rolled in to a rowsing welcome home and it was sooooo exciting to get to finally welcome friends back!
HOME
"ROAD HOGS"!!!
I had a little trouble getting good pics because something was wrong with my eyes. They kept leaking. LOL! It was an emotional afternoon, the good kind. These fabulous men and women were gone for 15 long months and it's sure great to have them home once again.
We couldn't have asked for a better Memorial Day Weekend around here.
This tired lil gal is crawling off to bed now.
Wishing a happy weekend for everyone! *HUGZ* all 'round!
