WASHINGTON Some two months after the Red Cross warned U.S. commanders of widespread prisoner abuses, the commanding general at Abu Ghraib prison assured the Red Cross in a confidential letter that Iraqi detainees were being given the best treatment possible and that even more "improvements are continually being made.''
In an interview today, however, Brig. Gen. Janis L. Karpinski insisted that she was "set up'' by Army officials who had her sign the letter when she had no idea of the depth of problems uncovered at the infamous prison outside Baghdad.
In addition, Karpinski said she was notified in an e-mail today that she was being suspended from duty, but has not been given a formal explanation.
"You'd think somebody would pick up the phone and call me,'' she said, lashing out at the Army hierarchy. "That should have been the protocol courtesy. I am a general officer. Nobody could spend the 25 cents to call me?''..."

Ahem... um, Janis... Paging Brigadier General Janis Karpinski...
Well, she ain't answering her official Army cell phone, her home phone answering machine message box full, checked every TV cable show all over New York and Washington, what do want the Army to do? THEY SENT YOU A FREAKIN' EMAIL, GET OVER IT!
ps - Max Factor called: It seems that you have joined Omarosa on the reject list there, too.
Prosecution rests, your honor. She is guilty as charged (or will be).
Regards,
Good Editorial on that very subject.
I haven't read the report, but based upon eight years of active duty, there's no doubt in my military mind that the chain of command was nonexistent. Why? The abuses took place between 2-4 AM.
Where were the NCOs? Where were the officers, from the butterbars to the stars? Had they been doing their jobs, this thing would have been stopped long ago.
Every unit that I was assigned to had 24/7 manning, with staff duty officers/NCOs responsible for oversight after normal duty hours. Routine inspections after hours would have uncovered the hanky panky taking place.
The fruit of Clintonian 'Da cow twits' .....in action
"She wasn't allowed into that unit..The MI ran it"...That's her story , she's sticking with it and McCaffarey stuck it to her for disclaiming any reponsibility over her own MPs....Big breakdown in oversight....I am sure as soon as the investigation is completed, the MI is in for some house cleaning, too.
DC Mayor for Life Marion Barry said the same thing.
When people are given positions they havent earned to promote a politically correct agenda this is what you get.
The government offices are full of these people , now the military obviously has their quota.
Tell her to read the Taguba report.
Also tell her that her policy of: "Visiting each prison at least once in a three month period" isn't acceptable to even me, based on common sense. She's a disgrace as a "leader".
AAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH, you just know there are more like her in our military. She probably got her promotions the same way Weasley Clark got his..........reasons other than merit.
She makes me think of Molly Ivers.
Well, this is certainly a surprise (/sarcasm)
"During the course of this investigation I conducted a lengthy interview with Brig. Gen. Karpinski that lasted over four hours, and is included verbatim in the investigation annexes. Brig. Gen. Karpinski was extremely emotional during much of her testimony. What I found particularly disturbing in her testimony was her complete unwillingness to either understand or accept that many of the problems inherent in the 800th MP Brigade were caused or exacerbated by poor leadership and the refusal of her command to both establish and enforce basic standards and principles among its soldiers."
Maj. Gen. Antonio M. Taguba
Oh, I guess Brig. Gen. Schultz knew nothing of what was going on.
Not so much lying as clueless. When they had an IG inspection about Abu Ghraib in the summer and the International Red Cross was asking questions later and other items, it should have given her a clue, but it didn't.
