ALBANY, N.Y. - Re-electing President Bush will mean a loss of freedoms and "create an America we won't recognize," Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is telling potential Democratic donors.
In an e-mail appeal distributed by the Democratic National Committee to help Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign, the former first lady said "the stakes in this election are incredibly high."
"If they get their way, you and I will be living in an America governed not by our hopes, but by our fears," Clinton wrote. "We'll be living in an America where we see our freedoms diminished when they ought to be embraced, our rights restricted when they ought to be strengthened."
"We'll be living in an America that shrinks away from the political and economic challenges of the 21st Century," she added.
Heather Layman, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, said Clinton's criticism appeared to be directed at the Patriot Act that gave law enforcement officials new powers in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
"Hillary Clinton seems to have the same problem John Kerry has when it comes to being on both sides of this issue," Laymen said. "After voting in favor of the Patriot Act, both Hillary Clinton and John Kerry now attack this common sense law. The Patriot Act allows law enforcement to use the same tools they use to fight crime to stop terrorists."
"President Bush has shown strong leadership in the war on terror," Layman added. "If John Kerry had his way, terrorism would still be treated as a law enforcement matter, and Saddam Hussein would not only still be in power, he would still be in Kuwait."
Clinton's fund-raising appeal, which went out last week, comes at a time when Democrats are scrambling to offset Bush's multi-million dollar, pre-general election campaign financial advantage.
On Friday, it came out that Kerry was considering delaying accepting the party's nomination until sometime after the Democratic National Convention at the end of July. That would allow him to put off the date when he would begin relying solely on $75 million in public funding for his campaign. Bush is also expected to accept such public funding, but doesn't officially become the GOP nominee until the Republican National Convention concludes in early September. Without delaying accepting the nomination, Kerry could have to make the $75 million last a month longer than Bush does.
Sen. Clinton, considered a potential 2008 White House candidate should Bush win re-election, said things are looking good for Kerry and the Democrats.
"A year ago everyone had written Democrats off," Clinton wrote in her letter. "The media had taken for granted the re-election of George Bush. Isn't it fun to prove them wrong?"
"The Bush-Cheney campaign has blown $70 million on negative ads, but it is still tied in the polls with John Kerry," Clinton added.
On the other hand, Kerry isn't running 20 points ahead of Bush in the polls, with all the negative reporting coming from Iraq.
Hopefully the only freedom lost will be Hitlery's when they finally lock her sorrow a$$ up.
Someone ask Hillary what she intends to do to EXPAND GUN RIGHTS.
Then tell her to shut her lying, toad-faced piehole.
Loss of what freedom? These evil pricks still have the freedom to openly express hatred of America with no consequence. Many on the left have either directly or indirectly called for more American deaths in Iraq and a variety of mishaps wished upon Bush. No storm troopers have knocked in their doors.
However, a few estranged Christians with guns, now there's a danger to national security! Quick send in Janet Reno and the National Guard!
When you apologize to The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy for telling the TRUTH about you and your anti-husband...Hillary, we will see that you are starting to get the concept.
Ruby Ridge
Waco
Not under the Democrats, Hillary.
But when the AWB sunsets and President Bush does not sign the renewal bill, and when a Republican president appoints judges during the 2004 and 2008 presidental terms who are constructionists -- then yes, our freedoms will be strengthened.
Gun owners especially should understand that the second amendment protects all the others. That bars most Democrats from holding the honor of being called "freedom's defenders."
You gotta hand it to her. She sure has mastered the "big lie." The truth is, our freedoms are at stake if the democrats regain power.
Kerry and his groups have matched Bush dollar for dollar; and it hasn't done much for him.
C'mon, you need to take a lesson from the Arabs, just when you think they can't hate us any more, they find it deep within what they call hearts to hate us a little bit more! Surely, Hillary will give us many more opportunities to plumb the depths of our loathing of her.
Interesting to see her setting the table for '08. By telling the Rats how they're going to feel after Ketchup Boy goes back home from the campaign trail, she looks prescient to them, and will find a way to deliver them from their sorrows in a few years.
Only thing is, she's going to have to get past a bruising battle with Al Sharpton for her Senate seat first.
Hmmmm, I don't recognize the New York City skyline anymore due to the gutless inactions of her husband (and her "co-presidency" of course).
Could that be what she is talking about?
The left doesn't have room to talk about "who's more negative than the other", this article is a good example of who's nothing but negative.
It might be bruising but Sharpton doesn't have a chance if black politics in NY are the same as in Texas. In Texas, black political activists, preachers, and community leaders are too jealous of their own power to support other blacks for office except in districts that are 97% black. There's only so much walkin-round money, grants, and government contracts to be had.
Gee Hellary .. I forgot .. we are suppose to hug terrorists and get to know them better instead of putting them out of business
How silly of me </ sarcasm >
Uh no missus Clinton, the America I didn't recognize occurred under your husband's presidency-Ruby Ridge, Waco, and when I woke up on the Saturday before Easter to see government goons busting down the door of an American's home and pointing a machine gun at a 5 year old boy- Then sending that little boy back to a communist hell. That was the America I didn't recognize. I pray every night that you and your socialists NEVER get in power again.
IIRC, Ruby Ridge happened in August 1992, when GHWB was president.
Nice try, though.
Once again the hag paints with a roller. I want some damn specifics! List all those rights you've lost. What freedoms? What are you living in fear of? On second thought don't answer that last question. I don't think we want to hear the answer. Why can't some interviewer ask some tough questions and demand answers.
