In todays Reads the Boston papers flood the zone on Kerrys plan use the Democrats nominating convention to do anything but accept the nomination. Plus, a must-read Michael Barone piece on the growing gap between media spin and the reality on the ground on Iraq.
Reading John Kerry's hometown newspapers this morning, one gets a clear sense that Boston residents are less than appreciative of their junior Senator's latest ploy to delay his nomination several weeks beyond his party's nominating convention. Adrian Walker has a look at what a Kerry non-acceptance speech might look like:
Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Thank you, delegates. Thank you, you suckers from ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and FOX, for attending our nominating -- pardon me, our four-day "unity conference."
As you know by now, there are four magic words I cannot utter this evening. But they really don't matter, my friends, because we all know why we're here tonight. I know how you feel, and you know how I feel. We don't have to say it out loud.
It only gets better from there.
Boston's Democratic mayor again called on Kerry to change course and accept the nomination at the convention:
A frustrated Mayor Thomas M. Menino yesterday urged Sen. John F. Kerry [related, bio] to make good on plans to accept the Democratic presidential nomination in the Hub, bluntly telling Kerry to ``just do it.''
Menino, peeved that Kerry didn't clue him in on planning that could render the Boston convention irrelevant, said it's too late for ideas like Kerry's.
``My advice? Do what everybody else has done in the past,'' Menino told reporters.
``Just do it. Just get it done.''
The Boston Herald looks at how the President's supporters might respond if the convention becomes little more than a four-day rally with no meaningful business to conduct:
``Certainly, we would give strong consideration that there be (Bush) rallies all four nights of their four-day political rally in Boston, should Kerry decide to delay his nomination,'' said Bush campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt.
Asking the question "Will the real John Kerry please stand up?" a Herald editorial argues that Kerry's problem goes well beyond simply changing his mind on the issues -- and crosses the line into blatantly misrepresenting his positions:
It's not that politicians aren't entitled to change their minds. That happens.
John Kerry goes way beyond that. He changes or shades or outright contradicts statements he's made or votes he's taken in the past, when taking a different view is advantageous.
Michael Barone ponders the growing gap between media coverage and the facts on the ground in Iraq:
To the criticism that they report and overemphasize bad news, reporters say, correctly, that bad news is news. But in a country like Iraq, ruled by a vicious dictator for the last 35 years, good news is also news. Reporters readily fan out to find bad news. But they seldom seek the good news -- readily available in Iraqi and military weblogs and confirmed in polls of Iraqis -- that incomes, electricity, schools, water quality, medical care, religious freedom and security are improving in Iraq. Some reporters, as the Daily Telegraph's Toby Harnden reports from Iraq, deliberately avoid good news because they think it might help George W. Bush win re-election. ...
The gains to be won by persevering in Iraq are great -- an example of decent government can change the Middle East. The losses to be suffered by not persevering are even greater: Vast gains by terrorists determined to attack everything we hold dear.
The AP looks at how job gains in many Midwest industrial states have "defied expectations" -- showing a broad-based recovery and an improving job market in every region. Read about President Bush's radio address on this subject, and take the quiz to learn more about America's growing economy.
This election is too important for any person who supports the effort against terrorism to be left sitting on the sideline as this Nation faces a continual threat of terrorist attacks.
Please visit the Bush-Cheney '04 website to find out how YOU can get involved! You don't have to be in a state that is up for grabs (I am in Oklahoma and it doesn't get any more secure for the President then this State). There are plenty of things you can do to support the President wherever you live.
Visit Bush-Cheney '04 today and find out how YOU can help re-elect this team in November --

It's more like he outright contradicts statements he's made
Keep up the great work John .. You're making Al Gore look good
The article by Michael Barrone is excellent. A gem of an essay in these days of leftwing trash journalism.
Thought the same thing when I read the article -- very nice change!
Already signed up and doing my bit. Hope that everyone else, who reads this thread gets involved now.
