THE WEEKEND THREAD

Good Morning Aeronaut, Happy Military Monday to you!
Mornin', everybody ! HappyThe Robinson's Customized "Freepmobile".
This Memorial is decades overdue, veterans of WWII dying at the rate of about 1,100 every day, and many of the living physically unable to go to see it.
On April 29, 2004, as a service and tribute to members of the World War II Generation, the National World War II Memorial opened for public viewing, exactly one month prior to the formal Dedication Ceremony taking place May 29, 2004.
The World War II Memorial is the first national memorial dedicated to all who served during the Second World War.
The memorial, established by the American Battle Monuments Commission, honors all military veterans of the war, the citizens on the home front, the nation at large, and the high moral purpose and idealism that motivated the nation's call to arms.
The Second World War is the only 20th-century event commemorated on the Mall's central axis.
- Communities and veteran service organizations are planning local tributes on dedication dayin stadiums, city plazas, and American Legion and VFW halls. A specially-produced broadcast of the noon pre-dedication Tribute event and the 2 p.m. dedication ceremony that follows will be available for viewing in these venues via satellite. Those wishing to learn more about viewing events in their areas should contact their local veteran service organizations such as the American Legion and VFW.
- The History Channel and C-SPAN have each agreed to carry the two-hour dedication ceremony live starting at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 29. These broadcasts will insure that virtually every American can pay tribute to the members of the World War II generation.
Those of you born after the end of the war in September 1945, please note the deliberate recognition given the incredibly high majority of citizens who in every way supported the war and those who served in it! Although I was a child of 7 at the time of Pearl Harbor (11 when it ended), my memories of the day and all those that followed were acute, actively involved as every old-enough-to-be-aware American was.
WVNan and I have often described here on The Finest our participation as children in saving and turning in used paper to be recycled for the "War Effort," as well as scrap metal, including cutting out the ends of tin cans and smashing them flat.
Many critical goods were rationed, books carefully issued by the government to families (including each child) for such things as sugar, coffee, meat, butter, tires, shoes (only 4 pairs per year per person), etc.
In this manner, those items were thus available to our fighting forces around the entire world, engaged in Europe, Asia, Africa and on all the seas of the globe.
Even we children were PROUD TO DO WITHOUT in order to sustain them!
Gasoline was limited according to need, farmers and ranchers given "A" cards to be able to operate tractors and get their products to stores or for shipment to the fronts.
We never thought in terms of "being deprived" in not being able to have "things," or usually not being able to go to a vacation destination, unless it was near us.
Quite literally, The War and those engaged in it were paramount, unlike today, rather than our own "desires" - - -
Those who complained or dared speak against anything about the war were ostracized and labeled unpatriotic, traitors, or even treasonists.
You can perhaps understand then, our abhorrence for the climate of America today and our passion that the Liberal Creep be overcome while it is still possible.....
Many of you had parents or grandparents or other relatives or friends who participated during WWII.
Here is the official resource for seeing if they are listed, or to enroll them if they are not.

Thankyou M'Lady for posting that, I hope to be going to DC this summer.
This is one of the places I want to visit.
Good morning. I wanted to be sure that I said thank you for everyone's help last night. I ended up falling asleep at the keys, thus not saying goodnight on my way out.
It is a dreary, rainy Monday here, and thunderstorms woke me up at around 2 am, so I might be taking a nap later!
It looks like we might have the tool situation covered. Thanks for all of your help. If you would still like to send support to them, FReep Mail me.
Hope everyone's Monday is a little cheerier than the weather is here!
Please join me in paying respect for a beloved Free Republic poster who served America during WWII in the Pacific Theater, and in two tours of Korean Conflict battles.
As a young Army man, he served under General Douglas MacArthur in the major Pacific engagements - back at home, he entered the ministry, and continued his full Army service career as a Military Chaplain.
This dear man not only comforted and counseled thousands of military personnel and their families, but he personally escorted home many of those who perished while on active duty on foreign soil.
Even in retirement, this highly respected man was called by President Ronald Reagan to accompany back to America a group of 13 fallen in Korea returned by North Korea many years after cessation of hostilities.
He was very active in the formative years of Free Republic - the Whitewater Years that made us what we are today, Jim..:))
I came to know him well in the summer of 1998.
Because I remembered so many things about his era, having two older sisters, and knew most of the songs of which he is so fond, we forged a friendship, rooted even deeper by love of the Lord and His blessings.
In September of 1998 when Susan McDougal was being tried in California for alleged misuse of the personal credit card of Nancy Mehtah, for whom she worked, I *innocently* proposed to our Billie she and I quietly take said credit card and go out to lunch with it, while no one was looking.
Freepers being Freepers, others invited themselves along, and Invictus chimed in with: "If things under Clinton get much worse, I plan to head back to the South Pacific - specifically to the one place I found during WWII that "knew no war."
That proved to be located in the Marquesa Islands, and where he for many years returned for annual retreats during the winters here - if my memory serves me correctly, to the village of Taiohae on Nuku Hiva.
Gregarious and adventurous souls that we are, some of us decided to sail back there with Invictus to experience A Perfect Life..:))
We dubbed the place where we entrenched Freeper Island, and the rules were closely followed:
* There will be no dissension nor disrespect - only heartfelt civility.
* Great care will be taken to ensure a peaceful and happy civilization.
Our Miss Billie was called "Empress." I became The Princess.
There were regular Friday night luaus held, at which she and I gave hula lessons to the fellas - slow learners that they were..:))
The hazards were great - like the day before one luau when ChiefNegotiator 'accidentally' mowed down our hula skirts to 4" lengths! (We hastily substituted palm fronds bound together)
The gathering place was established by A1stus as the SOPAC Saloon, which Billie and I perpetually tried to 'redecorate.' We succeeded in being allowed to place upon the moose head above the door seasonal decor for holidays, decorative neckties, sunglasses, etc.
Never, though, were we allowed to remove the...um...velvet painting behind the bar..:(
LOL
The discourse in the Saloon was the height of hilarity - the most divergent views expressed with utmost civility, and the execution of that became a Fine Art!
(We also were prone to *intrude* upon threads in danger of igniting into full-fledged flame wars, gently grinding the ugliness to a halt with our silliness..:))
One of the highlights was a recipe Invictus gave for a native delicacy - Poisson Kru, which we lovingly referred to as Poison Krud....
Billie, in computer crashes I have lost my links to Freeper Island and The Poisson Kru Recipe contained therein.
Can you please post it for today's Freeper Friends?
Invictus has not been actively posting here the past year and a half due to a vision problem, but to my delight when he popped up with Freep Mail on my birthday celebration on May 7th, I learned his grandchildren scan his mail and sometimes Free Republic for him.
I am in awe of the fact he uses touch typing, nonetheless, and manages his replies himself!
(even with good sight, I fumble and have to correct every reply)
Invictus, I want you to know how respected and loved you are by all who know you, and how grateful every one of us is for who and what you are... our ideal of an American Patriot, with a heart full of love for our God and all His Children - and a delightful sense of humor...
( Invictus will be apprised by his grandchildren, I'm sure, of this post and any side Freep Mail you might wish to send him. )

Thanks for the info about the World War II Memorial. As you know my father was one of those who served during that war, working in a gunnery in the Naval Air Force.
Morning Aqua!
Read: Luke 10:38-42
One thing I have desired of the Lord, . . . that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. Psalm 27:4
Bible In One Year: 1 Chronicles 22-24; John 8:28-59
I'm usually a happy person. Most of the time I can take on as much work as anyone can give me. But some days there just seems to be too much to do. The schedule may be so full of meetings, appointments, and deadlines that there's no room to breathe. Life often contains too much work, parenting, home improvement, and other responsibilities for one person to handle.
When that happens to meas it may happen to youI have some options. I can retreat into a shell of inactivity and leave everyone who is depending on me out in the cold. I can slug my way through, moaning as I go and making everyone wish I had chosen option one. Or I can get my perspective realigned by reminding myself what Jesus said to Martha (Luke 10:38-42).
Jesus told Martha that she had become "distracted with much serving" (v.40). He reminded her that her sister Mary had chosen the one thing that would never be taken away (v.42). Like many of us, Martha got so wrapped up in her service that she forgot the most important thingfellowship with her Lord.
Are you overwhelmed? Don't lose sight of your priorities. Spend time with the Lord. He will lift your load and give you the right perspective. Dave Branon
Good Morning Mr. Mayor! :)
My father served in WWI, stationed at Kelly Field in Texas, where he instructed pilots and mechanics in the Army Air Corps on the workings of and repair of airplane engines.
He thus was too old to be in the military during WWII, but instead, as a licensed consulting engineer, was with The War Production Board based in Atlanta to troubleshoot in any of the seven Southern states in production plants with problems.
He thus was able to fly home to Coral Gables, Florida (Miami residential suburb) to see us now and then.
Happy to hear that your Dad was able to fly home. Remember stories of mine hitchhiking from Virginia to Oklahoma, and a long cold bumpy ride in a bumper seat through Kentucky. Do you remember the bumper seat?
The many tasks we face each day
Can burden and oppress,
But spending time with God each day
Can bring relief from stress. Sper
To keep your life in balance, lean on the Lord."
The striking thing is how very relevant everything in The Word is today and every day, just as when it was revealed to us two thousand years ago!
We can never lean too heavily upon Him -- His love and mercy endureth forever.....
Good morning Mr. Mayor and FReeperss everywhere.
