A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....05-24-04....Military Monday
Billie, The Mayor

A Few of FR's Finest
....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

"and a long cold bumpy ride in a bumper seat through Kentucky. Do you remember the bumper seat?"

Do you perhaps mean a rumble seat ??

My father's youngest sister lived near us back then, and her Ford indeed had a runble seat - one that folds out from the back like a vegetable bin.

She was so cool, and often let a friend and me ride back there..:))
I remember at age 8 her taking us one day to Matheson Hammock Beach for the day - drinking Orange Crush sodas - getting badly sunburned..:(

WWII memorial is generation's touchstone

Visitors walk to an entrance of the National WWII Memorial after it was opened to the public in Washington April 29, 2004. The memorial, which was established by the American Battle Monuments Commission, honors all military veterans of the war, the citizens on the home front, and the nation at large. The memorial was built on the National Mall between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. REUTERS/Gary Hershorn

I didn't think I had that right! That's it a "rumble seat". lol

He was a teen ager at the time, said he was curled up under a blanket in that rumble seat and rode all the way across Kentucky freezing to death. It must have been a dirt road since it was the bumpiest ride of his life. Think he was smilin all the way though, knowing he was going home for a few weeks.

"he was curled up under a blanket in that rumble seat and rode all the way across Kentucky freezing to death. It must have been a dirt road since it was the bumpiest ride of his life."

Right you are, Aqua.
Roads then were narrow and two-lane, with smaller vehicles (limited to 40 mph maximum speed limits), and little money for repairing ruts and potholes even on paved roads because of the cost of war.

Keep in mind, too, springs and what shock absorbers were available were not very effective - no air-glide in those days!!

Hitchhiking was then considered a safe way of travel, by the way; until about 1950. I had an adventurous cousin in Bristol, Tennessee, who as a teenager in his summers went all over America that way!

He later was a Naval Officer, and when he got out of service, he and some friends had a ship built in Singapore, and he sailed completely around the world for a year.
Eventually got it out of his blood and settled in Seattle, bought a hotel, and married.

Good morning and afternoon to all the Finest on this day we honor our beloved men and women in uniform, near and far.

The pic above is of the cemetary at Santa Ysabel, a little Catholic mission church in the hill country of San Diego County, established almost 200 years ago. It's a beautiful and peaceful place ... a soft breeze always moving the flag and trees, the flags and markers always moving me.

When driving by, I like to stop and sit for a few minutes to let the place refresh me, and still the waters within.

Wish I could visit it today, as I'm sooooooo dern irritated by all the defeatist whining that gushes out of the bleeding-heart media and Michael Moore worshippers ... grrrrrrrrr.

Anxious to see Dubya's speech tonight, though ... )

mrstank ... welcome to FR!

LadyX ... thanks for your posts this morning ... )))

Not sure if you are referring to The One and Only Original Freeper Island of 1998 I described - or another version created much later by others.

You would have been a lively and welcome addition to our merry crew, though..:))

Hopefully, Billie will eventually swing by and furnish a link to ours - -
