PRINCETON, NJ -- In a year filled with partisan bickering, it may come as some solace that Republicans and Democrats agree on at least one thing: the state of moral values in the country. Unfortunately, the consensus is not good. Roughly four in five Republicans and Democrats alike rate moral values in the United States as "only fair" or "poor." Just one in five in either group thinks morals are "excellent" or "good."

to see the whole thing.
Now for comment: So it appears that almost everybody recognizes there is a problem. So, either no one wants to do anything about it, or we have very different opinions as to the solution.
Since it is fairly pointless to expect to convince half the US population to immediately change their point of view (despite the fact that it feels good to say) the question is what can we do to come to some sort of consensus and reverse this trend?
My inclination is to say that is starts with the media and ends with parents - with leaders of all stripes in between.
Here is are some questions: if mothers worked less and stayed home more, would that help? Is the trade off in lost productivity and GDP worth it? At which point do society's social needs exceed it economic ones?
Looking forward to your responses.
"Help! Our morals suck! Our morals suck! We can't do anything about them...! Help!!!!"
Quit complaining about morality and high gas prices.
This country is a bunch of whiners....hypocritical decadent Pilgrims all.
Maybe they should pray about it.
At least Massachusetts is allowing perverts to confine their rectal sodomy within the bounds of lawful wedlock. Surely that's a step in the right direction.
The birth of MTV was the death of morality for me. But somehow parenting prevailed and they passed through their fascination with it intact. No longer do they give it--and the rest of the media decadance--a second glance.
Well when you have 1960's vintage hippies entrenched as school teachers everywhere teaching the cult of "uber-tolerance" and "multiculturalism" instead of solid Judeo-Christian morals and good old American patriotism, what do you expect?
The question remains though whether "Republicans" and "Democrats" define morals in the same way!!
How about this question: "Which party is most responsible for the moral decline in the U.S.? The one that supports the homosexual marriage or opposes it?"
Maybe the next generation will become so disgusted with the state of morals in this country that they'll turn things around.
Politicians chiding the rest of us for our lack of morals wins the the "Moronic Statement of the Year Award".
The question remains though whether "Republicans" and "Democrats" define morals in the same way!!
Excellent. But, either way, there seems to be a consensus that those morals are lacking. Which brings me back to the question of what can be done?
Or shall we lower the bar and declare success like Europeans are so fond of doing?
Firing these crap teachers would be a good start. Unfortunately they've been there so long and are so deeply entrenched at every level from Kindergarten to University, the educational system in this country is like one big inbred family. Makes me sick even thinking about it.
Yesterday, a bunch of pols whined because the Catholic Church was considering withholding communion from those who legislate for abortion.
"We demand the luxury of killing the unborn and being sanctified...."
Did you see a poll like this during the years of Dan Rather announcing to is viewers that the "Republican Kenneth Starr is investigating the Pres. personnal life"?
Did Gallop poll about sexual harrassemnt? Did Couric do ANY stories on sexual harrassement? (NONE)
Gallop polled about "who lies, what kind of lies are OK, and should a Pres personal life be important, and have you committed adultery, and is Ken Starr a pervert?". And our news media did stories on how "everybody lies, and everybody commits adultery".
Gallop is suddenly polling on morals? It is because of the prison pictures.
And to make the US public feel guilty, and feel that Bush and Rumsfeld are immoral.
It is simple, they want guilt, second-guessing, and hindsite, for it breeds in-action, and a feeling of "make it go away".
Which leads to a Kerry/UN/Soros/Kennedy victory.
Are you saying that media decadence of today is, or is not,a driving force of our culture?
"Which leads to a Kerry/UN/Soros/Kennedy victory"
In that order?
Sure American morals are in the tank but who's fault is it? You look at the garbage on TV, the movies, the streets. How many titty bars do you have in your towns, How many porn shops. We have agreed to take God out of our schools, public buildings and to slander and nearly shame anyone who believes in God. The ACLU has done a wonderful job eradicating all vestages of the word god and in destroing wonderful orginizations like the Boy scouts. We've let the homosexual community dictate what we will and will not accept. We have let in totally unchallenged immigrants and or terrorist. Look at our crooked CEO's and others with the need for greed. We've made it Politically incorrect to stand up for what is right such as respect to our flag. At a parade how many people stand, remove their hats, hold their hand over their heart, not many. We let politicians excape with their rederic of hate and misguidance. We allow our President to be slandered when we are at a warlike state. I can only speak for myself but I am one pissed off American. Incidently I spend 3 years in Vietnam, no bragging medals but I got my share of combat. Sorry if I've went on too long but by God something has to be done or we will not have a Country much longer if it continues.
The decline of morals in the U.S. began somewhere in the mid-60s...first to suffer moral lapses were books(remember the stir Lolita caused), then it was Hollywood, as more movie execs began testing boundaries of decency and began expanding past previous risque' films (such as the Bridgette Bardot ones of the lat 1950s). Other mediums soon followed suit. Playboy banished its airbrushes, SCREW magazine, Hustler, Penthouse were all launched. The Genie was out of the bottle and liberalism spread like wildfire across our campuses. It didn't help matters either that there was an unpopular war going on in Vietnam and a war of sorts occuring on the Civil Rights front at home at the same time. So, like a house of cards, morality soon fell in this country and I suppose its first victim was my former political party which I witnessed going down the tubes at its Chicago convention in 1968. But morality declines have also infected the GOP so it's no wonder that both Dems and Repubs answered the poll negatively. My question is when will the decline stop? Will we right our ship of state and flourish like Athens after Pericles came to power? Or will our American empire slowly fall like Rome did under the burden of debauchery of demented ceasars?
