A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....05-17-04....Military Monday

A Few of FR's Finest
....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

1) Click on the graphic to open the Calendar.
2) Once there you can click on any month and even click to the right to go into next year. Once you are in the month that you joined FR you will need to click on the number in the calendar and then an add item screen will come up.
3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit.
4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it.
5) If all else fails or simply if you want me to do this for you send me a FReepmail and I will gladly do it for you. ~Mixer

They are also planning on making a DVD of the event available soon, then we can send them to troops, family and friends who could not attend.

That is a GREAT idea. It is so important that our military, especially our deployed military far from home, know how much they are appreciated. They need to hear the voices of those who understand their mission and support them.

Hi, everybody!

Thanks for posting that military prayer list.

I need to make some updates and a further prayer request, Can you put my nephew's fiance also on the list. she is in the same unit as he is.

As you know, this is the nephew who is stationed in Korea along with his fiance.

They are planning to be married within the next year and they are expecting thier first child on October.

Thier plans are to try to get stationed stateside in order to raise thier child in the US.

Since they both still have a few years to go until they can, if they choose to, either re-inlist or get out of the military. I don't know what they are going to do then.

They are currently on leave and in the states but they have to go back I think in June or July to Korea.

This morning I heard thay they are planning to send people stationed in Korea to Iraq.

I am worried, I don't think they will send his fiance to Iraq in her condition but I,m more concerned about him and that they will send him over to Iraq. My mom told me since he is more in the computer field, though he did have some combat traning, they wouldn't send him without training.

I know this all has to be done and I don't question any of it, if it would prevent us from having another draft then go for it!

But I speak now as an aunt who only want's my nephew to be safe.

But I trust that he will be and he is doing what he wants to do.

But I'm still afraid for him and for my niece's boyfriend, who is being sent to Qatar.

Thank you for bringing this heroic story to us. It's painful to me that the media news doesn't realize how bad I want to hear about things like this that the real American's are out there doing. Will we have to wait 20 years until Ollie North tells us about it on War Stories?

By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, May 17, 2004 - About 3,600 members of the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd
Infantry Division will deploy to Iraq from the Republic of Korea, Defense
Department officials confirmed today.

The troops will begin deploying to Iraq in mid-summer, a senior official said
speaking on background.

The decision can be made with impunity, because of the beefed-up capabilities
the United States has on the Korean peninsula, the official said. More capable
air assets, a Patriot 3 brigade, rotating Stryker battalions, and far better
command, control, computers, communications and intelligence facilities more
than make up for the drop of U.S. troops in South Korea to 34,000, the official
added.

"Ongoing global posture review is strengthening our position in Asia and
Korea," said Richard Lawless, deputy defense undersecretary for Asia-Pacific
policy. "This strengthened global and regional posture, including our efforts
under way in Korea to realign U.S. forces and enhance our capabilities, allows
us to employ our forces worldwide in a more flexible manner."

Lawless said that if needed, the United States can quickly augment air and
naval presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Officials said Korean and Japanese leaders were informed of and agreed with the
U.S. decision. They said it is part of the overall look at U.S. global posture.

The troops will spend one year in Iraq. Since military tours of Korea are
typically one-year unaccompanied tours, some soldiers will spend up to two
years separated from their families. Officials said the majority will spend
between 12 and 18 months away from home. No decision has been made on whether
the brigade will return to Korea following its tour of duty in Iraq.

A senior military official said the troops are fully combat ready, and that
this will allow the stress to be "balanced" throughout the force. He said DoD
also is looking at changing the tour length of Marine forces assigned to Iraq.
Currently, Marines spend seven months in Iraq and seven months home.

Officials said that North Korea should not look at the deployment as an
invitation to invade the South. "Due to our strengthened posture and the
ability to quickly reinforce capabilities throughout the region, we can deploy
forces from Korea without assuming additional operational risks," Lawless said.

"It would be a misperception on the part of the North Koreans, let me put it
that way," said the senior military official.
