Bayonet Brits kill 35 rebels

OUTNUMBERED British soldiers killed 35 Iraqi attackers in the Army’s first bayonet charge since the Falklands War 22 years ago. The fearless Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders stormed rebel positions after being ambushed and pinned down.

Despite being outnumbered five to one, they suffered only three minor wounds in the hand-to-hand fighting near the city of Amara.

The battle erupted after Land Rovers carrying 20 Argylls came under attack on a highway.

After radioing for back-up, they fixed bayonets and charged at 100 rebels using tactics learned in drills.

When the fighting ended bodies lay all over the highway — and more were floating in a nearby river. Nine rebels were captured.

An Army spokesman said: “This was an intense engagement.”

The last bayonet charge was by the Scots Guards and the Paras against Argentinian positions.

The report does not say that they killed the 35 bad guys with bayonets, it says they were in an engagment where 35 Ayrabs were killed and during which the Scots mounted a bayonet charge.

The British use that stubby little bullpup rifle which I wouldn't think would be very satisfactory for bayonet work.

Outstanding. Reminds me of the South Koreans in Vietnam. Put them in helicopters and, "Okay, are YOU ready to talk?". The troops known for showing fierce resolve in battle are not soon meddled with thereafter. Let's see how history plays out. I'll bet those units aren't ambushed much anymore.

took a while to parse the bad journalism:

"British soldiers killed 35 Iraqi attackers in the Army’s first bayonet charge since the Falklands War 22 years ago."

"After radioing for back-up, they fixed bayonets and charged at 100 rebels using tactics learned in drills."

"Despite being outnumbered five to one,"

" they suffered only three minor wounds in the hand-to-hand fighting near the city of Amara. "

Conclusion:

So there were 15 British soldiers against 100 bad guys.
The 15 British soldiers kicked the cr*p out of 100 terrorists, killing 35, capturing 9, and having only minor wounds in response.

RULE BRITTANIA!!!!

I just dug out the DVD. I'm going to watch it in honor of the fine business our Scots friends have done with cold steel.

Stonewall Jackson would be proud. Why do I get the feeling that that particular regiment won't be ambushed in the future?

They use the SA-80 automatic rifle with 5.56 NATO rounds. A lot of guts and the hats off to them for showing the gutless bushwhackers what they are really up against. Maybe these locals should have stayed home in their tents......

I wish they'd let 'em go back to their No. 1 Mk. III Enfield .303 rifles with the 17" sword bayonet. Now THERE was a weapon for hand-to-hand combat!
