NEW YORK — In their first interview since the Columbine High School massacre, the parents of one of the killers said they feel no need be forgiven and didn't realize their son was beyond hope until after he was dead.

"Dylan (Klebold) did not do this because of the way he was raised," Susan Klebold told columnist David Brooks in Saturday's editions of The New York Times. "He did it in contradiction to the way he was raised."

Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 13 people on April 20, 1999, before taking their own lives.

The couple took issue with people who say they forgive them for what happened.

"I haven't done anything for which I need forgiveness," Susan Klebold said.

They acknowledged they missed signs that their son was in trouble. Klebold and Harris were in a juvenile diversion program for breaking into a van and stealing tools and other items in January 1998.

The Klebolds' attorney, Gary Lozow, told The Denver Post the Klebolds had no plans to grant any other interviews. In a story for Sunday's editions of The Post, Lozow related the first moments after the Klebolds learned of the shooting. They had heard the gunmen may have been part of the Trench Coat Mafia, a loose group of students, including their son, who said athletes at Columbine bullied them. "When early word came that the Trench Coat Mafia may be involved in the shooting, Tom ran downstairs to look for Dylan's trench coat, which he couldn't find," Lozow said. "He was afraid Dylan might be involved. So he called me [Lozow} and offered to go to the school in hopes of negotiating with Dylan. It wasn't accepted."

Wait just a big fat minute here! This father hears about a shooting at his kid's school, suspects that his son may be invoved, and his first reaction is to call his freakin' lawyer! Heeeellloooo, I think we have a problem here.

The Klebolds settled a wrongful death lawsuit against most of their kid's victims families. I believe the only one who hasn't accepted the settlement was the father of the black kid killed by the two shooters. The dead black kid was the one the shooters said "There's a n****r over here!" and then shot him in the face.

You would think liberals like the Klebolds would teach their children racial tolerance.

The Klebold's may not need forgiveness - but they sure need healing! I pray that they will find the ONE who heals and be restored!

"would you like to do this" and " how about we go do this" all the while forbidden from any physical contact. "

My grand-daughter is 2 1/2 and this is how she is being raised?? Her Mom lets her run the house and Mom is taking her cues from the Ophra show et al. and others that suggest that kids shouldn't be disiplined -- EVER!

Teachers can only try to cope in this kind of parent stupidity induced madness.

Thank you, I was just going to say (almost) the same thing. The parents of the children that were slain are horrified that they are not getting an apology. While the Kleibolds are waiting for an apology from the school.

In the meantime the shrinks are getting rich.

The politicians who created "gun free" (aka "disarmed victim zones") are the ones who are responsibile for people not being able to defend themselves from these wolves.

To be fair, they probably did. As I remember the boys loved those movies where they showed young men shooting up groups of people. Movies can influence their children to "look cool" and blot out what the parents have taught.

We know how hypocritical some libs are with racism. I work with a lib who talks of how great diversity is, but is the first one to say "nigger".

Teaching kids hate no matter what their age is a dangerous game and gamble.

Reminds me of a five year old in a pre-school who told another child, "don't sit by me because you're a nigger."

And yes, it works both ways.

The NY Times article failed to mention that the Klebolds paid cash settlements to nearly a dozen of their monster's victims families. Not surprising that the NY Times censored this bit of information.

The Klebolds won't apologize for what their monster did, but they'll pay cash to silence the families of his victims.

To be fair, they probably did.

With all due respect, Bunny, how could you say that was a fair conclusion?

These people told the parents of children that their son murdered, that they don't need no steekin' apology. They are full of hate and devoid of compassion, something that indicates to me that they would have not been the kind of people who taught their boy any kindness.

Here is what the handbook has to say . . .

Ezekiel 18
19 "Yet you ask, 'Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?' Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live.
20 The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.
21 "But if a wicked man turns away from all the sins he has committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.

There is a difference between hig-school hijinks and bomb making (and testing).

If you had a small aresnal in your room, I would hope your parents would notice.

They don't need forgiveness since they didn't do the crime. I agree.

So you're a proponant of apologies. I am not. I think it's a sign of how we cave to liberals that we are beginning to place so much emphasis on them.

Maybe it is time parents should start some law suits claiming their children are not getting the education they should because of the poor discipline situation. I think this could get some really great support from other concerned parents. For to long the majority has sat around letting the minority groups have their way. Is it time to turn the tables? Most school administrators would welcome help.

"I think he suffered horribly before he died,"

Oh yeah, looks like the kid wanted to clean after the mess... I mean, why did he commit suicide? To me this was no potty training incident but a kid who simply did not give a crap about the crap in his bedsheets... and I am sure his parents knew about that. And of course now they "come out", like gays, showing that they are "struggling" with this. Give me a break. Are they living as bums picking up the trash of others?

So you're a proponant of apologies

Not gonna go for that bait.

As I said, these people have shown nothing to indicate they raised their child with any kindness or caring towards others.

My comment was, what lead you to the "fair" conclusion that they did?

Be back later.

Exactly...completely inattentive.

My oldest son is only six years old but I can say with all certainty this WILL NOT happen under my roof. I am, and will continue to be, Gestapo Mom. Each and every day I clean up my kids' bedrooms (with their help). Nothing escapes me, and they know it. Invasion of their privacy? When they are paying rent and living on their own, they'll have all the privacy they have earned. Until then, my house, my rules.
