May 16, 2004 -- Dr. Atkins' disciples are eating major food companies alive. The low-carb diet trend is turning the stomachs of the makers of traditional staples like bread and pasta, who are blaming their shrinking profits on shrinking waistlines.

LOL! Well it just shows that even a self-described expert(I, Dane) of liberal media buzzwords is not immune in using them.
Gotta have my salsa and chips splurge once a year though.
Your reply is snotty and typical of many health professionals opinion of Atkins. However, has your doctor helped people lose weight? Have the experts been able to help the millions of Americans who are obese-including children? The high carb approach has proved to be disasterous for the average American. You are not average and obviously have a great metabolism. Although, you may still be subject to illnesses cause by your diet later in life. My Mother diliked protein and ate a high carb diet. She never weighed more than 100 lbs (great metabolism) but still ended up with type II diabetes and high blood pressure. Sugar and white flour aren't good for anyone. Atkins came out 30 years ago. It is not a new diet. New studies show Atkins to be quite healthy. Your reply is insulting really. Obviously, you know nothing about the struggles obese people face. ..being less than 100lbs..but you are willing to sit in judgement of these people. I am not obese by the way. My sister in law was obese and avoided judgemental doctors and their mean nurses. She died at 42 from pneumonia while following the latest high carb/low fat diet. Maybe if she didn't have to deal with nurses with attitudes like yours, she might have gone to the doctor-assuming the doctor wasn't lecturing and judging her as well. She spent a lifetime (struggling) with her weight and didn't need to be humiliated by the people who are supposed to help her. Maybe, you should consider another profession.

Sorry to hear that, and hope that your health improves. I know I'm certainly thankful for mine, in a second everything can change.
LOL!!!!!
I'm glad you have a sense of humor.......after I posted I was just hoping it would be taken in the way it was meant.......because I truly meant no insult when I laughed.
I also. This will be my last post about salsa and chips, because it may seem that I am obsessing, but there is no better "comfort" snack. I guess I went off the wagon for three days.
Also I tried salsa on a hard boiled egg(the food police have a new term for that also, "hard cooked egg") and basically gagged.
The only way I can eat salsa is with the chips.
Maybe the people who make high-fructose corn syrup will file for bankruptcy. That stuff is pure *poison.*
Can you tell me what is the reason for the more and more frequent nasty practice of ruining yogurt, ice cream, etc with agar/xanthan gum additives? I guess the purpose is more profits and more Krohn disease.
funny-ok-I am sorry. I guess I should climb down off my soap box. My sister in law was a wonderful woman. I miss her. I wish I had her back-at any size. She really avoided doctors (and nurses) after a seriers of unkind comments were made during routine visits. LOL thanks
LOL!!
There are doritos out I hear. I try to stay away from those foods-not healthy no matter the carbs but for an occasional treat...I hear they are very good. You can buy low carb stuff online-expensive though.
Let me ask a really dumb question here..........
What is it about the tortilla chips that make them so high carb? Is it the processing, the additives, the corn itself?
There are no dumb questions. Doritos are made out of corn and corn is high carb and high glycemic (digested quickly and causes high impact on blood sugar).
Like Hell!
You go right on FRiend.
Please accept my sympathy for your loss.
There are many thin people out there who believe they have some sort of universal nutritional/physiological expertise by virtue of the type of body they happen to be wearing... which makes about as much sense as believing you're a student of african culture and history because you happen to be black.
Anyone who argues with empirical evidence to preserve their prejudices about the character and habits of fat people as a group is an idiot. You shouldn't be ashamed to say so either.
Lord knows they wouldn't be.
I've been on both lo fat and lo carb diets.
Of the 2, the lo fat is the most unhealthy I'd say. When I went to lo carb and put fat back in my diet, I couldn't believe how much better I felt. I think the low fat diet was slowly killing me.
OTOH, these days I do not do either diet, though I come closer to the lo carb.
Instead, I avoid eating too much processed food, trans fats, processed sugar, white flour, sodas, that kind of stuff, and watch it on the starches. With just a little exercise (15 minutes of running per day, 3-4 times a week) and not drinking too much, I stay pretty trim.
I think just avoiding the obvious eating sins can do most of the job for most of us.
Thank you........I didn't realize that it was the corn that was the high carb problem.
Therefore my suggestion of making them yourself would be totally worthless.
I've made my own tortilla chips from from fresh tortillas.
You are completely right. I am staying on my soap box. Look out Free Republic! My sister in law was very big. She was stared at by the ignorant, given unwanted diet advice by just about everyone (mostly thin people who had no idea of how hard she tried),ridiculed and not treated properly at the doctors. Through it all, she kept her head up, had nice boyfriends (career girl/never married), dressed beautifully and was one of the most loving women I have ever known. This is far more important than being able to fit into your high school jeans. She was a unique and beautiful person and those too bigotted to see this did not have the opportunity to know a truly... great woman-their loss.
good pics. I lost a bunch of weight too, about 6" off my waist just by cutting back on carbs, but wasn't doing the atkins thing
also I have a friend who was vegetarian who started losing weight when she started eating meat
