Couric to Matthews: "It's a Question of Who is the Lesser of Two Evils" in Iraq (US or Al-Qaeda)
The Today Show

Posted on 05/14/2004 4:28:00 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

It has come to this. In discussing Iraq, the Abu Ghraib abuses and the beheading of Nick Berg, Katie Couric summarized the situation in this way:

"It seems like it's become of question of who is the lesser of two evils."

That's right. Katie Couric wondered aloud who might be more evil - Al Qaeda, which, in addition to beheading Nick Berg, murdered 3,000 innocent people on 9/11, or the United States of America.

And please don't imagine for a second that Matthews came to the defense of the US. When Katie asked Matthews for his reaction to the statement from Sen. Zell Miller to the effect that the Abu Ghraib prisoners had underwear put on their heads whereas Berg was left with no head, Matthews completely, yes completely, ignored Berg's beheading.

His answer was entirely devoted to condemning the US for actions that made us look like 'perverts.'

Can Today, Katie Couric and Chris Matthews sink any lower? I suppose anything is possible, but they are going to have to work hard at it after this morning's despicable performance.

Please see my posts 88 and 95 - since you saw it, can you confirm the word "who" was used, instead of "which"?

I confess that I can't, but I think you might be nitpicking. Taken in context, her words were construed by at least two of us to mean that she sees moral equivalency between the U.S. military and Al Queda.

I just want to know why they hate this country so much?

Good question. I have no answer for you - or me, for that matter. We live in the best, freest country on the face of the planet, yet they hate it with an unbridled passion. It's amazing to me.

She didn't really say that?!

I know, it's almost beyond belief. But I'm pretty sure I haven't gone crazy yet, and another FReeper, independentmind, has posted confirmation of having heard her say the same thing. See post # 94.

Al Jazzeera has NOTHING on NBC and Katie Couric.

The Continental Army would have strung this woman up on charges of treason and aiding and abetting the enemy.

I even had one geek trying to convince us that that we deserved it cause we INVADED Iraq and they were only fighting back! GOD LORD! I told them that that was a stupid statement cause the Iraqi people did not cut Berg's head off. AQ did!

But, when I hear liberals talk like this I feel utterly discouraged! What a battle we must deal with!

Don't watch. Let them achieve their apparent wish tobecome totally irrelevant. If they haven't already. Catie Couric - War Correspondent. Chuckle.

The sad, sad part is that so many sheeple use people like Qatie as their only news source and sheepishly believe everything she says as God's solemn truth.

I tune in, when I can stand it, just to see how far they've gone or to see what is the latest propagand-fest I'm going to have to debunk among friends at a later time. And I usually end up quickly turning the channel in disgust.

Well, now I'm worried about you. It's only May and they're spewing this garbage. How much worse is it going to get between now and November??? I think we should take up a collection and help you pay for your Nexium because I think you're going to need a ton of it. I'm going to have to double up on my BP meds or I am going to positively stroke out after hearing this complete and utter nonsense for the next 5 months.

Someone help me understand this, please. Why is what the guards did in Iraq a "perversion," when the same acts performed by President Clinton in the White House were "just sex?" I'm confused.

Well, it was presumably consentual with X42i, as far as the prisoners are concerned, it wasn't with them. It is rather a double standard that the guards should have followed rules and not engaged in that behavior, but the Pres can do so in the oval office and it's his business only. Puh-lease. And his lackeys, even the supposed feminists in the bunch, jump to his defense.

I find humorous the highwire the libs are trying to balance on by referring to any homosexual contact as a perversion for the Muslim prisoners because it goes against their religion (true enough but watch how the media interprets that same thought in reference to Christians) and, otoh, not at all unusual, a right to be protected for the US gay community. More doublespeak.

I wonder if someone finally smartened up and decided it would be in our best interest to let the right wing fight back this year with 527, since the left is doing it anyway, and Moore's movie is about to come out.

I can honestly say in the last 4 years i've watched a grand total of about 2 hours of the network morning news shows. I can't stand them. I'm a busy man but took the time and used to enjoy watching Hardball. Not any more. Mathews has been on my boycott list for a while.

I also used to enjoy Matthews and thought that he had independence of mind even if he was a Dem. But lately he's turned into a total Bush-basher and Kerry shill. I wonder what happened to him. One serious suggestion: perhaps he's decided that for marketing purposes he could carve out a prime-time niche as a liberal spokesman.

People are familiar with the Kerry tactic. Whenever his voting record is questioned, he chooses to misinterpret the comments as an attack on his patriotism. And Republicans inevitably respond that they aren't doing that, that they honor his military service but question his record in the Senate.

Anyhow . . . I would say that anyone who wonders which is the lesser evil - the USA or Al-Qaeda - IS unpatriotic.

So I'll state it unequivocally: Katie Couric is unpatriotic. Go ahead and sue me, Katie, but remember, truth is a defense.

I'm nitpicking because it would make a significant difference in a trial for treason.

Questioning if an -act- by the U.S. was more or less evil than an -act- by Al Qaeda is one thing. Given the specifics, it's vile, loathsome and pathetic, but it's not treason.

Questioning if the U.S., as an entity, is more or less evil than Al Qaeda, whom we are at war with? Treason. Hands down.

Being able to "construe" the first as the second isn't enough. The wording would matter.
