There's a lot of weird stuff, but ultimately the simplest explanation will probably turn out to be true. Nick Berg: a smart, idealistic, and slightly naiive young man went to Iraq because it seemed like an adventure, and wound up in way over his head. All the rest is details.

The most likely thing seems to be that Berg was involved with International ANSWER and went to Iraq to try to undermine the war effort on their behalf. His father appears to be active in Left-wing politics; his own anti-war activism was pointed out of Free Republic.

Of course, if this is true he may have met with Al Qaeda in hopes of doing a favor for them. He may have thought that he was going to contribute to the ant-war movement by posing as a hostage.

It didn't work out that way in the end, however.

Gotta say, I've been wondering about that possibility myself...

Or, even worse yet, could he have known?

At least 24 people put McVeigh with John Doe #2 who is identified in the book by name. He is an ex-Iraqi Republican Guard who was spotted outside the Murry Building seconds before the blast.

The woman who survived the blast but had to have her leg amputated at the scene to free her from the rubble is one of several people who looked out the window and saw John Doe #2 get out of the Ryder truck. She id's his distinctive tatoo, which is used by Iraqi soldiers in the Salman Pak area.

The guy worked for a Salman Management firm. Note the name.

Get this - he's free to this day and was working at Logan International Airport on 9/11 as a food handler!

Berg's reaction (or more specifically, the lack thereof) may be due to the fact that he believed he was making a ransom video. He said his name and the names of his relatives in that video and that appeared to be the purpose.

Berg's fathers word of "they have killed a friend" makes me sick, and smells like "aid and comfort to the enemy" to me.

Actually, it seems premature to say that Berg was anti-war. He father certainly is. As to Berg's political beliefs, people seem to be saying that he was in favor of the action in Iraq.

I have no reason to disbelieve that now.

BTW, John Kerry has already called the Berg family but won't say what they talked about.

I was talking with a co-worker and said yesterday I found the idea of Berg being in Iraq all by himself and not associated with Haliburton or others..as a single guy looking for work to help with the reconstruction just a bit odd. The hot bed of violence even for the contracted workers and this guy is a lone contractor? Ummmm. Even still a horrible death and he was an American citizen.
