I read the quote this afternoon and it was clearly attributed to his father. I actually printed it at the office because I was shocked and wanted to show an associate. It isn't a rumor unless the media has wrongly reported it, too many here have heard or read it today from various sources.

Here is the paragraph:
Michael Berg said his son refused a U.S. offer in early April to board an outbound charter jet because he believed travel to the airport was too dangerous. American soldiers refer to the airport highway as "RPG Alley" because of frequent attacks by insurgents firing rocket-propelled grenades.
According to the State Department, Berg told an American diplomat in Baghdad he preferred to travel on his own to Kuwait.
I would post the article from the Norman Transcript that contains local information about his time in Norman but it is not on-line and it is too long to type in this late at night!

You cannot send email except from the server that provides your internet access.WRONG!
Ever try Yahoo Mail? Or Hotmail? I can send and receive letters to myself on any computer in the world and the message would never leave the yahoo server. And anyone with my sign in code and my password could access it and do the same. Heck they could do it here using Freep Mail.
JS, You gotta get away from AOL.

I saw the disparity too. But, if you look at a map of Africa, Berg visiting Uganda and Kenya makes more sense. They're next door neighbors.

Good questions. I find this all very intriguing.

That is completely plausible, and I want to believe it.
Daddy's in ANSWER. His son is a good hearted person raised by a total radical. Poor guy didn't have street smarts, and walked right into hell.
I can totally buy this. If that's you on the tape, rest in peace, Nick. As for Mr. Berg, I'll keep to myself what I'd like to say to him right now. Even though he is acting completely inappropriate, I'm not going to if I can help it.
What you said is totally plausible especially if Nick had an uncle & cousins in Iraq. He would be fairly trusting of the relatives.

My comment: What is all of this about establishing email accounts -- do all these people have access to computers in Iraq?"I think they probably have those Internet cafe's in Iraq just like all over in different countries.
In fact if I recall correctly one of his friends had said he e-mailed him from an Internet cafe.

Posted way back in an article that Berg was in Uganda!
Hmmmm? Maybe we ought to check his US travels against a Fuqra matrix?

the email message still has to travel from the server, to the client PC where it is being displayed.
Let's all get on the same page....

of course it leaves the server, how do you see it in the browser on your screen if it doesn't leave the server.
go to www.ethereal.com, download a com analyzer and install it on your PC. run a capture, read your Yahoo mail, look at the packet breakdown, tell me what you see.

I can send and receive letters to myself on any computer in the world and the message would never leave the yahoo server. The message remains on the yahoo server, but you are also viewing it over the net from anywhere in the world.

"Most likely, Berg was a convert to Islam."
You know, I hadn't thought of that one. Note (from the film) the very Islamic (or ahmish?!?!?) looking beard.

I am again stunned. The father says that Nick just let a stranger borrow not only his computer but also his password. (College kids don't do that, despite what his father says. Lap tops are forever being stolen in college.) And then he goes on to say al Qaeda is probably as dangerous as Bush and Rumsfeld. Unbelievable.

So this kid was in Kenya, where Al-Qaeda bombed our embassy in 1998, in school at OU in 1999/2000 around the same time as Moussoui (who bought Nick's computer and used his email address), and worked at the Abu Ghraib prison on a tower around the time of the insurgent mortar attacks there?!So who was the camara man with the digital camera that took all the pics of the dog and pony show at Abu Ghraib? Wouldn't that be something if he was tied into that...... No, no........
