Americans Should Watch Nicholas Berg's Execution (Vanity)

For those who are avoiding the video of Nicholas Berg's Execution, I say, "All Americans should watch...and remember."

I watched it yesterday. I didn't want to watch it: I derive no sense of voyeuristic pleasure from such things. Yet I forced myself to watch it because I want to know our enemies. I don't want to understand them; I want to know them, so that I know who they are and what they are.

I want to know those who will brutally kill us without hesitation or remorse. I want these ugly and horrifying images burned into my memory so that I can be confident and resolute in knowing the magnitude of lethality we must dispense to defeat this enemy. And, perhaps most importantly, I want to know them and what they do, so that I may righteously condemn--and fight if need be--those within our country and our government who lend support to them.

Undoubtedly, many of you will say that you don't need to see this video, or others like it, to know our enemy. But that is not true. Even with our culture of media-exploited violence, it is one thing to imagine these acts, yet it is something entirely different to actually see them.

As a veteran, I am no stranger to death, having even witnessed, first-hand, the death of a friend. Yet still I was shocked and repulsed by what I watched yesterday. Prior to seeing the video, I had pictured in my mind the terrorists removing Nicholas Berg's head with a single swift swing of a sword. In reality, it was a much more gruesome and brutal event: the terrorists threw Nicholas Berg to the floor, jumped on him and held him down, and then repeatedly hacked at his neck with a large knife--for what seemed to be an eternity--until it came off in the terrorist's hands. Nicholas Berg's death was anything but quick or painless.

So wake up America! Open your eyes to what you do not want to see. For what happened to Nicholas Berg will be our future one million times over, unless we fight back with fury and unrestrained vengeance. World War III is upon us! If we are to survive, we must purge the earth of this evil--including those among us who rally for America's defeat.

The video is everywhere if you really search for it...and for the 3rd time I will post this again as a comment.

No one should be forced to view it, but I am proud to say that my wife, and several of her fellow teachers, are showing the entire unedited video to all of their high school students...consequences be damned! None of the kids are being forced to watch the video, but so far they have all chosen to view it.

Most of these kids are seniors and my wife says that the guy that teaches in the classroom next to hers thinks the local Marine recruiters will not not be able to handle the hoard that's about to show up on their doorstep.

I know it's not going to happen, but I called CBS and emailed them and told them how about showing the Berg video instead of, or at least in addition to the prison video they're showing tonight on 60 Minutes.

After all, Americans need some perspective for the word "atrocity."

If I owned Fox News, I'd randomly flash frames of the video of Nick's beheading on viewers television screens . . . Just as I would images of 9/11: planes crashing, victims leaping, etc., etc. . . .
