Grand jury to consider case against PDX lawyer jailed in Madrid bombing

An Aloha man being held as a material witness in the Madrid, Spain, train bombings is expected to testify in a Portland federal courtroom before a grand jury Tuesday.

Brandon Mayfield is a lawyer and former Army officer who converted to Islam when he married his wife about 16 years ago.

Federal law officials say Mayfield's fingerprints were found on a bag they said contained detonators in the train bombings. Nearly 200 people died that March eleventh and more than two-thousand were wounded.

But a Spain newspaper is reporting that it was one fingerprint found connecting Mayfield to the bombings. Spain authorities are questioning whether the print even belongs to Mayfield.

Mayfield was taken into custody Thursday by FBI agents, who also searched his home.

The 37-year-old had not been charged with any crime as of Tuesday morning.

If the grand jury does not indict him, Mayfield could walk free.

Mayfield’s family got a chance to visit him for the first time since he was taken into custody last Sunday.

His mother, visiting from Kansas to help Mayfield’s wife and children, said Brandon told her he is hopeful he’ll be out of jail within a week but he also understands the legal process can take time.

A military hearing is scheduled tomorrow at Fort Lewis for National Guard soldier
Ryan Anderson who is accused of trying to give information to al-Qaida.

Ah, another never-to-be seen story (on major media news)

I just heard on the news that OR is setting up a Dept. of Homeland Security.

To protect the Islamic homeland of Portland, OR, maybe?

Governor creates new office to fight terrorism

PORTLAND, ORE. - Governor Kulongoski has signed an executive order creating the state Office of Homeland Security.

Kulongoski says the office will bring together law enforcement, fire officials, and the military to fight terrorism and natural disasters.

The office will be headed by Beverlee Venell.

She previously directed the Oregon State Police's criminal justice division, and the state Office of Emergency Management.

Venell also oversaw safety at the Umatilla Chemical Weapons Depot.

Kulongoski's public safety adviser, Craig Campbell, will act as a cabinet-level adviser on homeland security.

The governor said today that the new homeland security office will be funded by existing money.

Existing money? I didn't think we HAD any existing money.
I wonder where they found it? Another question...
could this be an end run around Vera?

Hmmm...getting interesting up there! Makes me almost wish I was still an Oregon voter. They've found BUNCHES of money since their last phoney election to get more.

This POS deserves a General Court Martial for treason. If he is found guilty, he should be shot!
