I don't think I ran WMP that day. that day. But I did visit a lot of travel sites running multiple searches on airfares, and that's where I suspect I picked up spyware with imbedded Trojans in it (which kept multiplying after each removal and reboot,) and a hijacking Search bar in IE.

The multiplication of Trojans from 2 to 6 and also of spyware were the weirdest, most frustrating thing. Also, I recommend WinPatrol to help you see what it's running on the computer. This program helped me remove trash manually, which is what I think saved the (4th) day!

I've got something really bad the last couple of days and the site hijacks to Incredifind....

Will hijackthis help?

I also had to get rid of whenusave and whenusearch - Spybot worked on that one. Help....

Here's a page on removing Incredifind. Which reminds me. I think I've caught this one too - something of the sort flashed in my browser last night!

It will probably take it out since it works with the registry.

You have it scan and when it displays the list, pay close attention to the BHO's (browser helper objects). Windows gives BHO's a LOT of leeway and thus they can raise a lot of havoc.

If you have Google, it will appear with the other BHO's on the list. The one(s) you want to check off for removal will be the ones that you don't recognize. If you use Adobe Acrobat, it may appear in there also.

The bad ones seldom use their real name, so look for something unfamiliar among the BHO's.

Have HijackThis save a log file so that if you do blow something away by mistake, you can go back and undo its removal.

I have had excellent luck with it. I even use it to trim away some of the stuff that automatically starts at start-up that I could never find a way of removing. They show up farther down on the list.

LOL, that flashed through my mind when you said that.

I hereby redefine BHOs as "Browser Hindrance Objects". So let it be written, so let it be done.

I have been trying to fix this for the last week. Had massive problems and this was the last problem. I just fixed it with a program called cwshredder. All appears well.

I stand by cwshredder....my home computer had some kind of hijack spyware (but not from porn......we're way too boring.) Shredder fixed it when ad-aware and spybot wouldn't.

I'm trying right now to get rid of one on a friend's PC that won't even let "Hijack This!" run. It shuts it down cold. It isn't CWS since I've run CWshredder and gotten rid of that one. This new one won't let anything but AdAware run and that doesn't find anything.

I'm running SpySweeper trial version now. I don't even know what the bloody thing is named! Any thoughts?

Spybot. Get it at www.downloads.com update the definitions before you run it.

We have a computer in the office which had some kind of browser hijacker installed by some stupid kid. It was particularly annoying as it put up a full-screen web page on logon. It defied ad-aware.

Spybot killed it.

If you have Windows XP and multiple users, you will have to log on and run it for each user, including "Owner" and/or "Administrator" as each user has their own registry.

Do you know what the trial period of the free version of SpySweeper is? I can't find it anywhere. The license agreement doesn't specify. Does it become disabled after a certain period? Or is it missing some features?

Sorry, I haven't used SpySweeper as Sophos Anti-Virus and Spybot S&D seem to be holding
things in check.

Maybe you could drop an e-mail to Webroot. Or even listen to the radio show
I mentioned earlier.
You could listen to it over the web at www.kabc.com Saturday at 9-11AM PAC Time;
I think there may even be a dedicated call-in line for Internet listeners.

Also, the show has a user's forum at Yahoo groups; they may list a link to that
at www.kabc.com.

Thanks. I'll do that. The SpySweeper didn't do diddly for this hijacker.

Apparently CWShredder says I have a variant of CSW.Smartsearch.2 which is closing down Spybot, CWShredder and Hijack This. I'm about to give up. For the night that is.

Gee. I am surprised. 78 replies and NO ONE has pointed out that all this angst and anger and frustration and lost time and expense would go away if you just switched to Macs...

The TCO of Windows is getting too high...

Consider your bloodpressure the next time you get hijacked
