A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....05-03-04....Military Monday

A Few of FR's Finest
....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

Thanks, Mixer!

1) Click on the graphic to open the Calendar.
2) Once there you can click on any month and even click to the right to go into next year. Once you are in the month that you joined FR you will need to click on the number in the calendar and then an add item screen will come up.
3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit.
4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it.
5) If all else fails or simply if you want me to do this for you send me a FReepmail and I will gladly do it for you. ~Mixer

Hey dutchess, I suppose I *should* have gone on ahead and registered.Wouldn't that date look fine by my name! Only it probably wouldn't have been "Lakeside" as we were living in Wisconsin at the time. I think "cheese-head" was already taken! Ditto "Packer Fan". Anyway, besides the reasons already given in previous posts, I'm basically shy and retiring and much preferred anonymity to displaying before the whole of Watergate/FReeperland my ignorance. But I was still out here laughing with you all, crying with you all, and cheering ya'll on!

Hey Dutchess. Hang in there. It can surely be frustrating. The goal is worthy, however.

Hi all, I'm finally home..

The doctors appt was for a physical, I haven't had one in years.
I have to go back for blood work to check cholesterol, sugar,
liver function, arthritis, etc, etc, etc....

The last time I had any blood work was 7-8 years ago,
I was checked for hernia and the doc gave me the option to
have my prostate checked, I told her no thanks.. : )
I said when I'm 50 I may let you do that. That's only 2 years away..

The elder priest, speaking to the younger priest, said, "I know you were reaching out to the young people when you had bucket seats put in to replace the first four pews. It worked. We got the front of the church filled first." The young priest nodded and the old one continued, "And, you told me a little more beat to the music would bring young people back to church, so I supported you when you brought in that rock 'n roll gospel choir that packed us to the balcony." "So," asked the young priest, "what's the problem?" "Well," said the elder priest, "I'm afraid you've gone too far with the drive-thru confessional." "But Father," protested the young priest. "My confessions have nearly doubled since I began that!""I know, my son, but the flashing neon sign 'TOOT 'N TELL OR GO TO HELL' has to go."

"Down the slope we are terracing flower beds and walkways (an ongoing project--doing it ourselves--are we stupid or what?)"

Short Answer = Stupid, Yes!
lol

My parallel guilt was palpable, working flower beds all by myself on both sides of the driveway and the walkway to the front porch - along the side of the house, across the back wall of the yard (with steep steps descending from there to the lower level), and a corner rose bed.

Off the great room by the fireplace was a screened porch; out the dining area doors, an open deck.

Naturally, the steps going down to the yard from the latter necessitated planting a zillion zinnias to hide the lattice..:))

In the area by the hammock was a gravel path going down to the water - yep - lined it on both sides with rocks and rows of annuals, plus another side bed.

Enough? Oh, no, the dog pen on the slope was removed, and made a great sunny spot for planting, and I made a bed below the wall on the side by the vacant corner lot - wooded city property that we mowed and maintained for the good of passersby.

When they did some work by the lake on the right of way and bulldozed an area of lovely dirt by the water, I hastened to strew zinnia seeds I'd carefully harvested the year before, and it yielded hundreds of plants with vibrant colors in masses.

After two years, when I was putting in pansies by the roadside in a new bed, the landlady announced she had to sell the house.
Whew! Turned out I was rapidly reaching my limit in maintaining it all, struggling to get up and down the hill, and the Lord said "WHOA!! Need to transplant this gal before she drops in her traces!"

In a small town where affordable rentals are very few, a wonderful neighbor two doors away made it her mission to find shelter for us. Miss Myrtle, the epitome of gentle and caring Southern Woman, nagged Mr.Walter, the widower across the street from our house.

"Now, Walter, you just HAVE to find a roof for Margaret's head!"
In his 80's, Mr. Walter is vigor personified, despite heart troubles, until then still maintaining his farm acreage out by the Country Cub. He used to be in the real estate business, and most assuredly did not need any more property.

He used to bring me fresh vegetables from the farm, and I'd made it a point to wield my weed eater on his yard now and then, as Southern neighbors work things, and my husband would mow his yard with our riding mower sometimes.

Sure enough, he said to us, "Let's look at houses for sale in your price range, and I'll buy one to rent to you."

We thus have a smaller level corner lot closer to the shopping area, and one I can more easily maintain, up until now. Scaling back a bit, but managing....

God is full of beautiful miracles, and I have had more than my share!!
He made me an Appreciator at an early age, and I never lose sight of that.

"Also, our mothers sound quite similar. Mine doesn't live in my house (yet) but calls me on the phone often and tells me what I should do, say act, etc. And I'm no spring chicken either. It shows they love us no matter how old we get."

Think this part was perhaps meant for DollyCali?

I'm afraid the last time I saw my precious mother was when I was 27, and my parents put the boys and me on a plane to join my husband in South Dakota.
From there, we were sent to Fairbanks, Alaska for 3 1/2 years, and she passed away when I was there and just 31.

She was a most special person who did not ever try to dictate what to do with my life. My sister and I still marvel that we cannot remember a single time that she raised her voice to us!
She was warm and intelligent, and possessed a great sense of humor - someone you simply wanted to please - -
