NJ: Schundler 46% McGreevey 39%

April 22, 2004--New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey trails Bret Schundler 46% to 39% in the latest Rasmussen Reports poll. Three years ago, in the 2001 election, McGreevey trounced Schundler by 14 percentage points. The New Jersey Governor's race will be held in November 2005. Schundler is not the only Republican with hopes of replacing McGreevey. State Senator Diane Allen finds herself in a toss-up with the Governor at this time. The poll found Allen with 41% of the vote and the McGreevey with 40%. Other match-ups will be tested as the year unfolds.

These troubling numbers for McGreevey come despite the fact that John Kerry is leading George Bush by 12 percentage points in McGreevey's state.

The Rasmussen Reports survey was conducted as part of its comprehensive Election 2004 polling service. This includes a daily Presidential Tracking Poll and state-by-state polling to measure the Electoral College and key Senate races.

The New Jersey Governor's election will not be held until November 2005. However, these match-up questions were included as part of a survey about the Presidential campaign in New Jersey.

Only 67% of Garden State Democrats say they would vote for McGreevey in a match-up with Schundler. Twenty-six percent (26%) of the Governor's own party say they would vote for Schundler.

Allen polls nearly as well among Democrats as Schundler (trailing 64% to 26%). However, Schundler attracts more support among Republicans and unaffiliated voters. Some of this may be the result of higher name recognition.

Among those not affiliated with either the Republicans or the Democrats, Schundler leads 41% to 26%. Fifteen percent (15%) of unaffiliated voters say that such a choice would cause them to vote for some other candidate.

McGreevey, Schundler, and Allen are each viewed favorably by 46% of New Jersey voters. The big difference is in the unfavorables. A majority (52%) of voters have an unfavorable opinion of their Governor. This fact helps explain the talk of a possible primary challenge to the incumbent next year.

Thirty-six percent (36%) of New Jersey voters have an unfavorable opinion of Schundler. Twenty-eight percent (28%) have an unfavorable view of Allen.

By way of comparison, 52% have a favorable view of John Kerry and 48% say the same about George Bush. Additionally, 48% of New Jersey voters approve of the way that Bush is performing his role as President. This is a bit lower than the President's national Job Approval ratings.

Rasmussen Reports has recently released state polling data for the Presidential race in West Virginia, Florida, and Colorado. Earlier surveys were conducted in Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Ohio, and Missouri.

On a national basis this time around, the Rasmussen Reports Presidential Election Tracking Poll has found Bush and Kerry virtually even for weeks.

The telephone survey of 500 Likely Voters in New Jersey was conducted by Rasmussen Reports April 20, 2004. The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 4.5 percentage points, with a 95% level of confidence.

I hope so to, I am getting sick of seeing Mcgreevy ugly smirk promoting himself during seemingly every commercial break. (I am sure you get a lot of him in NYC). He promised he wouldn't do it but there he is on T.V. all the time using tax payer money for his commercials (The current one playing every five minutes is on his crack down on insurance fraud).

Unfortunately I think John Corzine might challenge Mcgreevy in the primary, In which he would probably win and make it harder if not impossible for Schundler to get in.

The proposed "millionaires tax" will have every wealthy Jerseyite who is politically aware donating to Schundler. The Highlands act will have every builder and land developer in North Jersey donating to Schundler.

The fear of having your name show up on a site like opensecrets.org, listing a contribution to McGreevey is powerful motive to sit on your arse and let McGreedy crash and burn without your money.

Schundler will have enough funds to control the spin, and return retorts to any trumped up mudslinging by the Dems this time. Schundler also said he's learned his lesson about not letting McGreedy define him.

Luckily, the last Democrat Gov is Florio, so it's unlikely a last minute bait and switch will occur.

I'm very certain Allen can't win the primary, people don't go to primary elections to choice their favorite shade of gray.
