Nominations are requested for Free Republic's Peter Arnett Awards 'honoring' those reporters, news organizations and public figures whose reporting and statements have given aid and comfort to the enemy and undermined morale in the war on terrorism like Mr. Arnett did last year with his infamous interview in Baghdad saying the Americans were losing the war against Saddam.
Nominations will be accepted until 6 p.m. EDT Wednesday, April 28. Voting will commence later that evening with the cutoff time to be announced when the voting thread is posted.
Please provide a source link or documentation where possible.
A couple nominees to get things started:
The Washington Post for its cheerleading of the so-called antiwar movement. Nearly every prominent antiwar leader has been sympathetically profiled in the Style section and nearly every antiwar protest, no matter how small, gets reported on in glowing terms. The Post has never reported in depth about the background, funding and true agendas of the major antiwar groups.
Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) for his 'Iraq is Bush's Vietnam' speech. Kennedy's speech was used as a rallying cry by Muqtada Al Sadr who threatened that "Iraq will be another Vietnam for America."
The winners will be announced at the sixth annual freep of liberal bias in the media held outside the White House Correspondents Association dinner by the D.C. Chapter of FreeRepublic.com on Saturday, May 1.
Helen Thomas should be in there, but we need examples so we can vote accordingly. The same with Monsieur Gregory.
Thanks for the bits about Katie Couric. Last year she was concerned for Saddam's safety.
thanks for passing the word.
In a world where players like Elli Manning pout and complain about what NFL Team is going to pay him millions, we've got men and women like Pat Tillman who are serving their country, and devoting the last full measure so that we may live in peace.
I will always be humbled by these courageous men and women of the Armed Forces. They have my eternal gratitude.
I just wish the writers at Sports Illustrated understood what it takes to keep our Country from being attacked by terrorists, and the courage and honor our men and women are displaying on the battlefield!
(Yes, I'm serious. I'll be in BIG TROUBLE if we miss the bus.)
"One of the biggest criticisms of you is that whether it's WMD in Iraq, post-war planning in Iraq or even the question of whether this administration did enough to ward off 9/11, you never admit a mistake. Is that a fair criticism? And do believe that there were any errors in judgement that you made?"
That's just his most recent and perhaps why he came to mind immediately as a nominee.
Helen Thomas
July 3, 2002: "The imperial presidency has arrived. On the domestic front President Bush has found that in many ways he can govern by executive order. In foreign affairs he has the nerve to tell other people that they should get rid of their current leaders."
July 29, 2003: "President Bush has a huge credibility gap stemming from his exaggerated rhetoric that led the United States to attack Iraq. The Bush hype recalls the Lyndon B. Johnson era when LBJ's misleading statements and deceptions led us deeper into the disastrous Vietnam War.
Johnson later acknowledged that public mistrust had doomed his chances for re-election in 1968. Trust and truth still go a long way with the American people when it comes to war and peace.
To rally public support for an unprovoked U.S. invasion of Iraq, Bush laid it on with a shovel. There were scary warnings of an imminent, direct threat that Saddam Hussein would use nuclear, biological and chemical weapons of mass destruction against us."
January 29, 2003: Helen Thomas, a White House correspondent with presidents back to the Kennedy administration, told the Daily Breeze of Torrance, California, "This is the worst president ever. He is the worst president in all of American history."
February 5, 2002: "President Bush used his State of the Union address and some other recent speeches to flex the nation's military muscle and threaten several nations, designated as the "axis of evil."Rarely has the world heard a more belligerent American president. His tone and substance have dismayed our allies as much as the targets he cites -- Iraq, Iran and North Korea.
No U.S. military attacks are imminent, his spokesman reassures. And no, there's no new intelligence that makes these three nations any different now than they were last week.
Such strident statements from the commander in chief make you wonder. He's riding high in public opinion polls and is daring the world: "I can lick anyone on the block."
It seems to me that Bush has brushed off the man who knows more about war than anyone in his administration -- Secretary of State Colin Powell, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff."
It seems to me that Helen Thomas has been on the cutting edge when it comes to Bush-bashing and that all the other journalists and authors draw their venom from the Queen Bee. She has verbally defended terrorist suspects imprisoned at Gitmo and appears to hold them in much higher regard than the men and women in our military.
