"SOMETHING THAT DIDN'T MAKE THE NEWS"
Maybe you'd like to hear about something other than idiot Army Reservists and naked Iraqis. Maybe you'd like to hear about a real American, somebody who honored the uniform he wears. Meet Brian Chontosh.
Churchville-Chili Central School class of 1991. Proud graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology. Husband and about-to-be father. First lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. And a genuine hero. The secretary of the Navy said so yesterday.
At 29 Palms in California Brian Chontosh was presented with the Navy Cross, the second highest award for combat bravery the United States can bestow. That's a big deal. But you won't see it on the network news tonight, and all you read in Brian's hometown newspaper was two paragraphs of nothing. Instead, it was more blather about some mental defective MPs who acted like animals.
The odd fact about the American media in this war is that it's not covering the American Armed Forces. The most plugged-in nation in the world is receiving virtually no true information about what its warriors are doing. Oh, sure, there's a body count. We know how many Americans have fallen. And we see those same casket pictures day in and day out. And we're almost on a first-name basis with the pukes who abused the Iraqi prisoners. And we know all about improvised explosive devices and how we lost Fallujah and what Arab public-opinion polls say about us and how the world hates us.
We get a non-stop feed of gloom and doom. But we don't hear about the heroes. The incredibly brave service members who honorably do their duty. The ones our grandparents would have carried on their shoulders down Fifth Avenue. The ones we completely ignore. Like Brian Chontosh.
It was a year ago on the march into Baghdad. Brian Chontosh was a platoon leader rolling up Highway 1 in a humvee. When all hell broke loose. Ambush city. The young Marines were being cut to ribbons. Mortars, machine guns, rocket propelled grenades. And the kid out of Churchville was in charge. It was do or die and it was up to him. So he moved to the side of his column, looking for a way to lead his men to safety. As he tried to poke a hole through the Iraqi line his humvee came under direct enemy machine gun fire.
It was fish in a barrel and the Marines were the fish. And Brian Chontosh gave the order to attack. He told his driver to floor the humvee directly at the machine gun emplacement that was firing at them. And he had the guy on top with the .50 cal unload on them. Within moments there were Iraqis slumped across the machine gun and Chontosh was still advancing, ordering his driver now to take the humvee directly into the Iraqi trench that was attacking his Marines. Over into the battlement the humvee went and out the door Brian Chontosh bailed, carrying an M16 and a Beretta and 228 years of Marine Corps pride.
And he ran down the trench. With its mortars and riflemen, machineguns and grenadiers. And he killed them all. He fought with the M16 until it was out of ammo. Then he fought with the Beretta until it was out of ammo. Then he picked up a dead man's AK47 and fought with that until it was out of ammo. Then he picked up another dead man's AK47 and fought with that until it was out of ammo. At one point he even fired a discarded Iraqi RPG into an enemy cluster, sending attackers flying with its grenade explosion.
When he was done Brian Chontosh had cleared 200 yards of entrenched Iraqis from his platoon's flank. He had killed more than 20 and wounded at least as many more. But that's probably not how he would tell it. He would probably merely say that his Marines were in trouble, and he got them out of trouble. Hoo-ah, and drive on.
"By his outstanding display of decisive leadership, unlimited courage in the face of heavy enemy fire, and utmost devotion to duty, 1st Lt. Chontosh reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service."
That's what the citation says. And that's what nobody will hear. That's what doesn't seem to be making the evening news. Accounts of American valor are dismissed by the press as propaganda, yet accounts of American difficulties are heralded as objectivity. It makes you wonder if the role of the media is to inform, or to depress? To report or to deride. To tell the truth, or to feed us lies.
But I guess it doesn't matter. We're going to turn out all right. As long as men like Brian Chontosh wear our uniform."
Spread the word, America is winning!!

Illegals called tip of iceberg 500 smuggled via 'drop house'? By Jason Kandel and Rachel Uranga Staff Writers
CANOGA PARK -- Authorities who discovered scores of illegal immigrants in a filthy, infested house in a late-night raid said Tuesday that as many as 500 others may have been detained there by smugglers over the past few weeks. Five unidentified suspects face felony charges of alien smuggling and kidnapping following the Monday night raid at the 900-square-foot home in the 7300 block of Loma Verde Avenue. The suspects had padlocked the doors, installed metal bars and chicken wire over the windows and even forced the 76 Mexican and Central American immigrants to remove their shoes to prevent them from escaping, authorities said.
"These people ply on human misery," said Kevin M. Jeffery, deputy special agent in charge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "It's akin to drug smuggling. These people are making lots and lots of money smuggling human beings." Authorities believe that the residence -- which had been rented on a month-to-month basis over the past year -- was being used as a "drop house," where smugglers kept immigrants until family members paid for their release. "The going fees for Mexicans to come to Los Angeles is $1,500 to $2,500," Jeffery said. "Central Americans are paying $3,000 to $6,000 for their journey." Officials estimated that as many as 500 immigrants had been detained there over the course of the past few weeks.
A family living in another house on the lot reportedly moved out just days before the raid. A six-foot wooden fence partially obscured the view of the property from neighbors, who said they hadn't noticed anything unusual over the past two weeks. Officials say the 14 females and 62 males -- including a 14-year-old boy -- survived on instant soup, potato chips and cookies and water and soda. Their possessions, including a Bible, cell phones, toothpaste and U.S. maps littered the back yard of the home.
"There was trash all over the house," Jeffery said. "There were lots of clothes, even stacks of wet clothes, but I don't think they were from this particular group of aliens. I think the house had been used in the past. There were cockroaches all over the place. There were areas in the back yard you couldn't even get to because of all the junk piled up," he said. The immigrants were being held by immigration officials for questioning. Officials were also questioning the owner of the home, Alex Milla, 32, of Canoga Park. Milla said in an interview that he bought the home about two years ago, and had been renting it for the past year to three men who he believed were from Guatemala and Mexico.
He said they put down a $2,000 deposit and always paid the $1,200 monthly rent on time. Milla said he did not check on the property until a couple of weeks ago, when he put it on the market and began showing it to prospective buyers. The renters had put the bars on the windows when they moved in, he said. "They claimed to have sold clothes downtown and they wanted it to protect their merchandise," Milla said. Los Angeles police got a tip Monday night from a woman who said her husband's cousin was being held at the house. She told police her family had paid an undisclosed amount of money and that he was supposed to be released, but he hadn't been.
"She had been speaking with him on the telephone off and on," LAPD Lt. Carlos Velez said. "He got street names by going outside and giving her descriptions of a billboard and other landmarks. She and her husband then drove through the area, and saw the landmarks."
At a Tuesday news conference, ICE officials said they believe the immigrants had been smuggled across the border at El Paso, Texas, and taken to a house in Phoenix, Ariz., where they were fed and allowed to clean up. From there they were driven in vans to Los Angeles.
Authorities believe a major crackdown on border crossings in Arizona has forced many smugglers to take immigrants to the Los Angeles area.

You know, I have sometimes thought this but never typed it. You remind me of a modern day Joan of Arc ("Joanie of Arc"). That's meant as a great compliment.
