A letter back from one of my "esteemed" Senators:
I appreciate knowing your views on the Development Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. I am pleased to be a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act, which will help thousands of undocumented students who wish to pursue a college education. An estimated 60,000 undocumented immigrants graduate from American high schools each year. Even though many of these graduates have lived in the United States for years and likely had no part in any decision to immigrate illegally, it is very difficult for them to attend college. Instead, they face possible deportation. Federal law strongly discourages states from granting in-state college tuition rates to undocumented immigrants. Further, these students cannot legally work, are ineligible for federal student aid and rarely are able to secure private loans. These severe roadblocks have deprived our nation of future leaders, productive workers and a great source of tax revenue. The DREAM Act would provide relief to many of the students facing these problems. It would repeal a provision of federal law that makes it costly for states to grant in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants. Also, it would provide a mechanism by which some undocumented students who are long-term U.S. residents could become permanent residents. By passing the DREAM Act, we can give new hope to many immigrants who now often face an uncertain future after they graduate from high school. It would be a great step in enhancing the lives of these young people, while at the same time helping to contribute to a more prosperous and diverse nation. As this legislation progresses through the Senate, I will certainly keep your views in mind. Again, thanks for e-mailing your views to me. Please don't hesitate to let me know how you feel on any issue that concerns you.
Sincerely,
Tom Harkin United States Senator
Can we at least expect someone to be a citizen of this coutry BEFORE we give them aid for school, driver's licenses, insurance, housing, etc.etc.etc?????????? There are illegal immigrants graduating from our high schools??? WTF is up with this?? We NEED to get a handle on this whole situation people, if it wasn't so serious it'd be a joke!
I e-mailed Sen.'s Harkin and Grassley about my cincerns about this mis-legislation (and you can see it's effect on Harkin...0....), please contact your Senators on this issue as well...what a farce!!!
At $8000 a head thats 480 million dollars right out of the "under funded" public school system.
So.....who's paying for all this, huh? HUH? Harkin himself!????
BTW, I hear those in Washington say there's not enough money for American tax slaves to get relief from their oppressive tax burdens. They'll just have to keep working two jobs to pay their bills.
Unelect Tom Harkin. Do it for your country.
$10,000 each in NY. Now they want to pay for their college, too?
With our paychecks? Isn't that pleasant!!!!
He means illegal aliens, or criminals breaking our immigration laws, doesnt he?
I guess that the Dream Act would have helpfully paid for the flying lessons of the 9/11 terrorists, seeing how they too were undocumented immigrants.
There are colleges in Mexico.
Here's the problem - and I have specific, personal experience via a friend of my daughter's. Her friend - a smart, hardworking, devout kid - is brought across the border at two. Finds out at seventeen, when he asks his mom to sign his drivers license papers, that he's illegal. Not looking for aid, but an honor student with college dreams, he's denied entry at any price because, in this state, that's how it works (different state to state.) Now you can say it's his parent's fault, he should go back, etc. But he doesn't even speak Spanish! What exactly is he to go back to? This is a kid who could make a real contribution - as a teacher, a doctor, what have you - he's got the brains and the character. But because of his parents choice, he's stymied. So we punish the innocent? Posters, stop your knee-jerk, and to my mind frankly unAmerican anti immigrant rants, and think it through. The system as it is doesn't work. It's time to fix it. Hatch is right.
Illegal aliens are provided more social services than citizens. Isn't that a kick in the shorts.
So what?
There are lots of people in the world who are f*cked because they come from turd world socialist cesspools. Why on earth should this particular benefit burglar get to rape money from my children?
Because your daughter knows him?
If residency in your own particular third world cesspool is a punishment, then 6 billion humans are being punished RIGHT NOW.
Do you feel guilty? Do you want to move them here?
I don't, and I don't. Your particular crimalien is no different from a beggar in the street in Lahore or Jakarta, and there is no reason to accord him a benefit that does not also argue for rescuing the aforementioned beggars.
It's worse, the grad rate from HS for Hispanics is under 50% in high-population areas.
