Why They Hate Us, Really
NY Times ^ | 4/21/04 | Walter Russell Mead

Posted on 04/21/2004 5:01:57 PM PDT by NormsRevenge

For the last five weeks I have been traveling through the Middle East, meeting diplomats, officials, policy experts, military leaders, students and ordinary citizens. I learned something very important: the greatest single cause of anti-Americanism in the Middle East today is not the war in Iraq; more surprisingly, it is not even American support for Israel, per se. Rather, it is a widespread belief that the United States simply does not care about the rights or needs of the Palestinian people.

"The Palestinian issue is really what discredits the United States throughout the region," a senior Western diplomat with years of experience in the Middle East told me. Or, as one student after another put it after the university lectures I conducted across the region: "Why do Americans have to be so biased?"

In Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey and other countries, the large majority of people I spoke with are ready to tolerate the Jewish state — most even understand that the final boundaries of Israel will include some of the heavily settled areas beyond the pre-1967 borders. They also understand that few if any Palestinians will return to the homes they lost after the war that erupted when Israel declared its independence in 1948. And they are prepared to accept, though not to relish, America's close relations with Israel. Beyond that, they want increased American support for their domestic political reforms and for initiatives to enhance regional cooperation for economic growth and fighting terrorism.

But one thing sticks in their craw: Why doesn't America care more about the Palestinians' future?

They have a point. America's Middle East policy is unnecessarily zero-sum. We can be more pro-Palestinian without being less pro-Israeli. Indeed, to the degree that American policies help create support for compromise among Palestinians, pro-Palestinian initiatives can help Israel too.

Take compensation. United Nations resolutions call for financial compensation for Palestinians who cannot return to their family homes in Israel. Israel's position that it cannot accept millions of refugees and their descendants is reasonable enough, and the Bush administration's support of it is nothing new. But we should be equally clear about compensation.

Many questions need answering: where can Palestinians go to have their claims for lost property adjudicated and certified? What tribunal will hear these claims? What principles will guide its deliberations? Where will the money come from to pay the claims when peace is finally made?

The United States can and should take the lead in building an international consensus on the compensation issue and, working with allies in Europe and elsewhere, help raise money to ensure that it is more than a pious wish.

There is more we can do. Millions of Palestinians are now stateless. (Jordan has integrated the refugees within its borders; other countries have not.) When peace comes, all Palestinians should be citizens of some state with full economic and social rights. The new Palestinian state will need financial help to absorb many of these refugees; and neighboring states who agree to integrate Palestinians should also receive international aid.

In addition, while many Palestinians are well educated, many others are poor and lack skills. They depend on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for basic services and support. Who takes the agency's place when peace comes and the Palestinians aren't refugees anymore?

Taking the lead on these and other issues vital to the Palestinians would not bring quick progress toward peace in the region, nor would it undo overnight the consequences of decades of suspicion and resentment. But it would help to reduce anti-Americanism in the Muslim world and beyond, as well as to advance the cause of peace.

Ummm...maybe because they're the most depraved lunatics on the face of the earth? Maybe because they hate us? Maybe because they are the abosute antithesis to what we are and believe in? I could think of a million reasons but honestly, who gives a sh*t about them anymore? Sick fu*ks!

As long as the Palestinians act like rabid dogs, or a cave men with a club, there is zero reason for anyone else to consider them any higher than that.

Societies, just like individuals, are capable of suicide. There are only so many times that the US can or should pull the Palestinians off the ledge of the skyscraper and urge them to straighten out their lives. By now, they are so twisted and vicious that the only proper response from the US as an observer is to stand on the sidewalk yelling, "Jump. Jump. Jump."

But the bigotry of the Times prevents it from recognizing the truth about the Palestinians. So this alternative is not even on the editorial table at the Times.

I dissagree with the author.
"Why They Hate Us Really" is because they are part of a culture of hate. A cycle of hate passed down from generation to generation financed and fed by other tyranical governments and propaganda from the likes of Al Jazeera.

It is nothing "WE" the USA did.
The only way to break the cycle at this stage of the game is to totaly break their will to continue aggression. And that can't happen in todays world, with the rules of warfare in the terrorists favor

Gee, I don't know, do you think it could have anything to do with burning our flag, burning effigies of our presidents (back to Carter), taking our aid money and then rioting and shouting anti-American slogans? That might have something to do with it.

We have donated billions to them, yet they have followed a leader who stole those billions and taken his side over ours. Might have something to do with extending our hand and bringing back a bloody stump.

Bottom line is that the article is a bunch of hooey(what's hooey?).

My dictionary says it first appeared in America around 1920-1925, and "origin uncertain".

The Palistenan mentality (or the absence thereof) is similar to Lemmings (if lemmings could speak) protesting against the sea for drowning them.

"Rather, it is a widespread belief that the United States simply does not care about the rights or needs of the Palestinian people."

Well, touche. I know I don't, but that has been an attitude within me that was bred by Palestinian Barbarism. When they start to act like reasonable beings I'll listen to their bitch list.

Until that time, I have to conclude that they and their Arab neighbors are nothing more than murderous anti-semites, much in the same vein as Hitler. Leibensraum in the holy land is what they're after.

The reasons given in this article for "Why They Hate Us" are bunk. They hate us because we support Israel. Anyone subscribing to any other notion is denying reality.

No offense, but do you think that articles just format themselves??? If you want to cut and paste with formatting included from the originial source, then cut and paste the formatting also, not just the text. What you posted is almost unreadable...

Maybe Palestinies should ask themselves Why do Americans hate us?

Short answer. Any people who embrace terrorism as a legitimate form of political discourse are NOT the US's freinds. If the Palestininas want America to listen to them, STOP all terrorist attacks against Israel. Until that time No American will ever see any Palestinia as anything but a Homicide bomber in waiting.

For three thousand years the Arabs and Jews have been fighting.

It aint gonna happen that there will ever be peace. They hate each other with a multi-millenium passion, and the culture now spews over to include the other Infidels..

Leon Uris wrote one of his brilliant books THE HAJ fifteen years ago, and it just aint gonna happen. EVER!

There is no way that blowing up children will ever be an acceptable excuse for protest.

Your's is one of the most logical responses in this thread. However, I think it needs to be clearly said that the countries of the Middle East do NOT want them at all. In fact, they have been forcefully thrown out of several,.... at gunpoint!!

All the oil money could be used to build a country somewhere. They could do like the Israeli's did and convert the desert to farm-able liking space. They could put cities (again like the Israeli's did) where only sand and rocks are.

The Pali's are too stupid to see that the other countries in the ME are using them. They have the resources to help the Pali's but will not. Everyone hates them because of the rabid dogs they have become. Actually it is too late for that society anyway.

They have become so inculcated with evil that this generation of Pali's is too far gone... they want to do nothing but evil and death. I fear to say what is a fact, there is no hope. All that is left is for them to be quarantined or exterminated.

Too extreme? Show me examples of Pali good works and charity in the world. Okay, trick question/request.. there are none.

I realized it was "almost unreadable" which is why I immediately followed up the post with an apology and the address the article could be found. As far as formatting, yes, actually, every other board I post at does retain the formatting. How does one copy the formatting from an article and paste it here?

One thing that I never hear clarified...the West bank is often referred to as the "Occupied Territories". But it never belonged to a "Palestinian" nation, it was part of Jordan. If Israel were to return the land, why isn't it being returned to Jordan?
