I run AVG virus detection. My OS is Windows ME. Did a virus scan today and it detected a virus named Dialer.7.AH. AVG cannot remove it becuase it is lodged in my _restore temp files. I looked all around AVG's website for instructions on this and there was nothing.

Bill, You're right - just trying to add a little info.

Go to Windows Explorer, or on the start menu, right click on 'My Computer' - there is a 'System Restore' tab - go in there and click the box that says 'disable System Restore'. Go do your anti-virus work, then when finished go back and uncheck the box.

Under the "start" menu...
Goto "setting" / "control panel"
From the "control panel" start "system"
A small window will appear with four tabs at the top labeled "general", "device manager", "hardware profiles", and "performance".
Goto "performance" and click on the "file system" button. You'll see a new window with 5 tabs across the top. Last on is "troubleshoot".
Goto "troubleshoot" and a list of checkboxes will appear. Last one is "disable system restore".
Keep clicking OK until you've closed all the windows, and then "restart" your computer.
Go back in when you are done and re-enable the system restore.

OK - Right click 'My Computer'
Click on the 'Performance' tab
Click 'File System' button
Click 'Troubleshooting' tab
Check the 'Disable System Restore' check box.

Sys Restore should be found in the "My Computer" properties. Right mouse click on My Computer and click properties. When Properties comes up, click thru the tabs looking for Sys Restore. Then, restart, tap the F8 Key like morse code until your computer comes up in Safe Mode. Select Safe Mode (not the other options) and continue. Once your computer has rebooted, run your virus scan. Then reboot normally.
Since I work on commercial computers I'm not exactly sure how to get to Sys Restore in ME, But give this a try.

I was going to write the same thing, but didn't want to be the first one to do so.

Wouldn't be faster and easy to buy an Apple? Perhaps the poster isn't in the habit of changing cars when the ashtrays are full. He solved his problem in less than an hour. Why would he want to trash his perfectly good PC and purchase another machine for such a simple problem?

Today must be a banner day for viruses.
I use Cox internet, it comes with a virus scan in the Email system. The server does not forward the message to the user but kills it at the server and sends a notice to the user with the originators address.
Today it has blocked 9 infected Emails.
