WELKIN
The sky; heaven; the firmament

We don’t use this much nowadays—dictionaries usually tag it as archaic or literary—except in the set phrase make the welkin ring, meaning to make a very loud sound. What supposedly rings in this situation is the vault of heaven, the bowl of the sky. In older cosmology this was thought to be one of a set of real crystal spheres that enclosed the Earth, to which the planets and stars were attached, so it would have been capable of ringing like a bell if you made enough noise. The word comes from the Old English wolcen, a cloud, related to the Dutch wolk and German Wolke. Very early on, for example in the epic poem Beowulf of about the eighth century AD, the phrase under wolcen meant under the sky or under heaven (the bard used the plural, wolcnum, but it’s the same word). Ever since, it has had a strong literary or poetic connection. It appears often in Shakespeare and also in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales: “This day in mirth and revel to dispend, / Till on the welkin shone the starres bright”. In 1739, a book with the title Hymns and Sacred Poems introduced one for Christmas written by Charles Wesley that began: “Hark! how all the welkin rings, / Glory to the King of kings”. If that seems a little familiar, it is because 15 years later it reappeared as “Hark! the herald-angels sing / Glory to the new born king”.

The Greatest.

ALI.

Clay comes out to meet Liston
And Liston starts to retreat
If Liston goes back any further
He'll end up in a ringside seat.
Clay swings with a left,
Clay swings with a right,
Look at young Cassius
Carry the fight.
Liston keeps backing
But there's not enough room
It's a matter of time.
There, Clay lowers the boom.
Now Clay swings with a right,
What a beautiful swing,
And the punch raises the bear,
Clear out of the ring.
Liston is still rising
And the ref wears a frown,
For he can't start counting,
Till Sonny comes down.
Now Liston disappears from view.
The crowd is getting frantic,
But our radar stations have picked him up.
He's somewhere over the Atlantic.
Who would have thought
When they came to the fight
That they'd witness the launching
Of a human satellite?
Yes, the crowd did not dream
When they laid down their money
That they would see
A total eclipse of the Sonny!
I am the greatest!

Cassius Clay before the first Liston-bout\

I'm the pancake man,
And I do, when I can,
Eat pancakes by the score;
    I bake them brown,
    And swallow them down,
And loudly call for more.

    I'll lay my stakes
    That a million cakes
I can eat between two naps;
    Then call for more,
    A million and four,
Or a million and five, perhaps.

    It makes me fat,
    And more than that,
I'm jolly through and through;
    I've been known to laugh
For a year and a half,___
Or why not call it two

Oh, I long for a cake
    As big as they make,___
Say, fifty townships wide;
    I would handle it quite
    At a single bite
And stow it away inside.

GOOD MORNING EVERYBODY!

Here's something I posted on the DOSE thread Monday night and on yesterday's FR's Finest Thread (with some alterations)

I have something to say and I'm posting it here but I'll be saving it to post on other threads too.

Sooooo.......!

Taking a deep breath! here I go!

I really like to say this on "Sanity Island"

Everyone here knows how I feel about President Bush, I've made it no secret how much I love and support him. and living and working with (and for) people who do not hold these same feelings (they hate and fear him) It really hurts to hear constantly, day after day how wrong, stupid, arrogant and inept they percieve him to be. He is a failure to some and the devil to others.

I am sick and tired of every time I turn on the TV or the Radio I hear about another "tell all" book or that someone else is calling for President Bush's inmpeachment or hear how people in other countries are telling us how we should vote and who we should be voting for as our leader.

I mean, The last time I checked, George W. Bush is the President of the United States of America, not France or Germany or Russia or Australia or any other country so why to they feel they have a say in our selection of who is going to lead OUR country?

And now I read were this internet group is calling not only for Bush's assasination, they are also calling for the murders of Colin Powell, VP Cheney, Condi; Rummy and Ashcroft as well as the deaths of our troops.

When is this all going to stop?

This is why I come to FR and why I don't like to go onto certian threads that all they do is bash Bush, if I want to hear Bush bashing I'll listen to my coworkers and some of the people that live in my building!

I like coming to the DOSE and to FR's Finest because there are people on this thread who understand how I feel because they feel the same way about Dubya.

I admire his humility, (he's in not way arrogant IMO) his strength and courage. I admire the way that he turned his life around and continued on, leaving the past behind and forging ahead. I admire his love for his country and for his family even though some of the risks he's taking gets me scared for his safety but I know he is well protected both physically by the Secret Service and spiritually by God.

I may not know a lot about how to judge character and the science of politics but I do know what I see in President Bush and what I see I like.

Some time ago Sauropod asked me what would President Bush have to do to get me to stop supporting him.

The answer, he would have to commit a most horrendous crime such as murder. That is what would get me to stop supporting him.

I' not very articulate (so I sypathize with GWB about that!) and I can't fully describe what I'm trying to say like a lot who post on this and other threads. so I'll say it in simple terms. As a Christian, I see President Bush as a "brother" in Christ. So I can say to him with confidence, Mr. President, I love you, Brother!

And I'll keep praying hard for God to bless and protect him from all harm physically;spiritually, and politically. and may his enemies be few and his friends be many!

And I pray most fervently for his re-election.

That's the end of my rant.

((HUGS))Good morning, beachn4fun.

Our area is in a moderate risk of severe weather today. The Emergency Alert System had a run yesterday up in Northeast Oklahoma with numerous Tornado Warnings. Today looks to be really active.

We had a little dense fog this morning but it's all burnt off. It's sunny right now.
