Sensenbrenner Calls on Gorelick to Resign From Sept. 11 Commission

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Sensenbrenner called on Jamie Gorelick to resign from the Sept. 11 commission Wednesday, citing a memo she wrote as a deputy attorney general on separating counterintelligence from criminal investigations. "Scrutiny of this policy lies at the heart of the commission's work," said Sensenbrenner, R-Wis. "Ms. Gorelick has an inherent conflict of interest as the author of this memo and as a government official at the center of the events in questions."

On Tuesday, Attorney General John Ashcroft released the declassified 1995 memo from Gorelick containing instructions that "more clearly separate" counterintelligence from criminal investigations. He said the "wall" between counterintelligence and criminal investigations was a key impediment to terrorism probes before the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Landmark Legal Foundation, a conservative law firm, also has called on Gorelick to step down, citing the memo.

A phone message left with the Sept. 11 commission was not immediately returned Wednesday.

The basic architecture for the wall in the 1995 guidelines was contained in a classified memorandum entitled "Instructions on Separation of Certain Foreign Counterintelligence and Criminal Investigations. The memorandum ordered FBI Director Louis Freeh and others, quote: "We believe that it is prudent to establish a set of instructions that will more clearly separate the counterintelligence investigation from the more limited, but continued, criminal investigations. These procedures, which go beyond what is legally required, will prevent any risk of creating an unwarranted appearance that FISA is being used to avoid procedural safeguards which would apply in a criminal investigation."

This memorandum established a wall separating the criminal and intelligence investigations following the 1993 World Trade Center attack, the largest international terrorism attack on American soil prior to Sept. 11. Although you understand the debilitating impact of the wall, I cannot imagine that the commission knew about this memorandum, so I have declassified it for you and the public to review. Full disclosure compels me to inform you that its author is a member of this commission.

Memo by Gorelick raises a lot of questions that I would like hear answers to!

Hey, Jamie! Better call your attorney. How do you like being responsible for blocking investigations that could have prevented 9/11? Are you going to fall on the sword for Bill or are you going to tell us why Bill was so anxious to block foreign intelligence from having contact with domestic law enforcement?

Dick Cheney should step up and tell the commission this administration will no longer participate in this investigation until Ms Gorelick is removed!

That would really shake 'em up!

Every time I see this picture, it just screams "incompetent liberal Clintonista hack" at me.

Every time I see this picture it just screams "Emma Goldberg Soul Sistah". People like Gorelick are the reason the ACLU was founded. To protect America's enemies, not the Bill of Rights.

No kiddin'! The minute Ashcroft said "someone on the committee" wrote that directive I knew it was Jamie. How did she get on this committee in the first place? If she was picked by a republican, that's who should be taken off the committee as well. Hell, the entire committee is a sham! After his remark, they sure didn't give Ashcroft any heartache did they?

Cool what??? You have a short memory on past action of the republicans??? I am a conservative not a republican apologist. Frist and Hasterts deeds speak for themselves in the past, their current silence with this "non-partisan" commission has been deafening.

This appears to be a Clinton Administration effort to protect bin Laden - not bring him to justice! What does Laden have on the Clinonistas?

I don't know -- it screams little more than "paints on eyebrows with a broom" to me....

Now that you mention it, there is a touch of "Led with my face the one time I tried boxing" to her.

You'll be happy to know that it is Commandant Klink, whom we brought back from German after WWII along with Werner Von Braun, as he was thought to possess valuable intel info.

As for Sensenbrenner, can't he just fire her the way he's been firing the managers of his baseball team?
