[history]
French Ambassador Jean-David Levitte was just getting over the "diplomatic hurricane" caused by France's opposition to the war in Iraq when another scandal erupted.
He now has to defend his country against accusations of corruption in the United Nations' oil-for-food program, and he is blaming the right-wing news media.

Maybe we can discuss this over a glass of Merlot?

And perhaps a little cheese with that whine...

I have been deeply surprised in the last few days to see
a campaign of unfounded accusations against my country

Maybe he'll put on a mask tonight, and go smash gravestones in a Jewish cemetary.
(If there are any left unsmashed.)

"Let me be absolutely clear. These aspersions are completely false and can only have been an effort to discredit France, a longtime friend and ally of the U.S."
One guess as to where he learned this English speech pattern.

I hear they raised their threat level from "run" to "hide"!!!

I'd much prefer some Côteaux de l'Aubance, but Merlot will do, thanks.
See, I don't understand why, if there is proof of Chirac's cronies receiving bribe money, the US media don't pound it time after time in US and above all European and French news services. I don't approve smear tactics one little bit, but if it's a proven, documented fact then it must be told time and time again, particularly to the French people.
As for the UN, the proof of its corruption should be used as a base for a disbandment or/and expulsion procedure. Last year there were talks about dumping the UN and setting up some other kind of international body, one where democracies would have real clout, one where a terrorist state like Syria isn't appointed Head of the Human Rights Committee. I'm all for returning to the moral source and revive some truly democratic union.

He is right. It is because of the "powerful right wing media" that this story has any legs at all. If this would have happened before FOXNews (and the internet) it would not have even made a ripple in the media - because France is our friend (the sneaky one that will steal stuff when you aren't looking).

The French should spend less time fretting about their standing in the World and more time searching for their collective spines.

Hmmmm........my Epicurian Handbook says that that Vin blanc moelleux (Sauternes, Monbazillac) goes with Roquefort.
