Barbara (L) and Jenna Bush, the daughters of U.S. President George W Bush, walk together from the Darnall Army Community Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas, April 11, 2004 after President Bush (news - web sites) and members of his family visited with soldiers wounded in Iraq (news - web sites). Bush awarded 10 purple hearts to troops recovering in the hospital, after attending an Easter Sunday Church service at a chapel within the army base in central Texas.

I have to admit ignorance to current fashions. Our oldest isn't much into such. Yet. Our second will be because she's an artsy type who can wear just about anything and look great. She'll probably love all sorts of stuff that her father and I will deplore. That's all right. As long as she isn't flaunting too much or sporting tattoos or a pierced nose, I'll keep quiet. (well, there are a few other current trends that won't be acceptable, but I think all of our children are likely to conform to pleasing Daddy.)

I really don't have a problem with the Bush girls' outfits. (or your daughter's.) I would not have dressed that way for Easter or for visiting injured troops when I was their age. (when I was 22, I was pregnant with our first child.)

I think that root beer float went directly to my head. This is the funniest thread I've read in a long time.

Bless your heart.

"wearing a jean jacket, while lamentable is not a sin."

And I never called it a sin.

You call it lamentable and I call it inappropriate. Not much difference between the two, IMHO.

"No matter how hard the wind might blow, she would not have looked like Jenna, since she had on a much more demure dress."

Of course, you or I have no way of knowing how Jenna would have looked on a windy day wearing a dress identical to the "demure" one your daughter was wearing. The way a girl is built, and how she carries herself, has a lot to do with how a dress looks on her as well. Some girls could have worn the outfit Jenna was wearing without lifting an eyebrow or turning a head regarding the appropriateness of it. I doubt we would have known it was spaghetti strapped but for the wind displacing her sweater...much like a spaghetti strapped camisole top under a sweater or light jacket.

I don't particularly like the outfits worn by the Bush girls yesterday, but I do like the fact that they went to church and went to visit our wounded in the hospital at Fort Hood. The decisions of where to be and what to wear were theirs to make. They generally try to avoid the spotlight, and I doubt their decisions had anything to do with making a public impression one way or another. Jenna is the type of kid who is going to look "inappropriate" to some no matter how she dresses. I doubt the guys they visited gave a hoot about what they were wearing, and I doubt many of them thought they looked, or acted, like "sluts" and "whores". I guess that's the thing I find most "inappropriate" about this whole thread - the fact that the president's daughters did two very commendable things and the discussion is turned toward focusing on a negative instead. There is a message there somewhere, and I don't think its poor reflection is on the Bush twins.

You may not have brought up the comment, but you sure inferred something very inappropriate! You should be ashamed with such a disgusting comment, then run away?? Not only are you a creep, your a coward to boot! Then pretend your some sort of gentleman?? If you didn't wear a full suit and tie to Easter Service your a heretic!! As for the jean jacket, there are no pictures that she wore it into the hospital which she probably did not.

Pray for W and The Truth

Why do I not find this surprising?

well that is really the point, that young women like these and your daughters and my own, have their own taste and fashion sense. we may not share it, but so long as it is not inappropriate (and contrary to DS's opinion, i see NOTHING inappropriate about the Bush Twins attire) who are we to dictate? while DS daughter looks very nice in the pic he posted, that would look ridiculous on my daughter and is not remotely my daughter's style, nor should it be.

there are all kinds of things that parents have to keep tabs on. for instance, i allowed my teenager to double pierce her ears, when her friends were not permitted to do so. But her friends parents allowed them to watch PG13 movies when they were 11. and i NEVER permitted that. I impose my will when it is necessary, but i do not expect my daughters to share my taste. they are individuals.

"I think he is a Texan wannabe, transplanted Yankee, from New England. No true Texan male would even think the thoughts he posted, much less use that fr--ch vocabulary in public."

My thoughts exactly. I think many of the posters are from north of the Mason-Dixon lined as they don't have a clue as to how Southern Women dress. I think the twins look great.

I have personally heard the men complain about the bare backs, etc., of some of the women, saying they can't concentrate on the sermon, the worship, etc. The men have gone to the pastor and asked him to ask the women to please cover themselves. The pastor has passed on the message and his heart was in it.

Sounds like your pastor and the most of the male congregation are obsessed with sex. I would be concerned if I were you.

What church do you attend?

I do not attend church at this time. I pray on a daily basis, actually several times a day. I try to live a good life, not hurt people, and help when needed. I have a wonderful relationship with Jesus Christ.

When I do join church again, it will be at one that is accepting and not judgemental, and especially not one where the men can't control their sexual urges while in God's house.

My daughter was in community college getting all A's when she was fifteen.

And she never wore a dress that looked like it belonged on a bed.

I hope this helps.

I'm not joking. I am totally serious. If your legs are showing, you wear hose. If your toes are showing, you do not. Ergo, don't wear sandals with skirts, and do wear hose, and you have nothing to fear from the likes of the strict-minded such as me.
