Whatever happened to dressing up on Easter Sunday?
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | Saturday, April 10, 2004 | Alyson Walls

Although famed musical composer Irving Berlin thought them lovely enough to write a sonnet, nowadays few women are donning Easter bonnets.

In fact, you're more apt to see wrinkled khakis and rumpled polo shirts than pressed suits and pastel pumps at church on Sunday.

While Easter Sunday has traditionally been the day to show off your new spring finery, America has become a nation that dresses down, and not just on "casual Fridays" in the office.

Agreed.

Have you read this whole theard?

Has anyone given scripture that says women have to wear dresses? "dressup" on Sunday? etc?

Most of the women in our church dressed up today. Even saw a few young men in suits & at least ties who I've never seen dressed up. Everyone looked nice.

While I try to dress at least as well as I do at work, I don't think God really cares what we are wearing to church as long as it doesn't interfere with someone else's ability to worship. What irritates me is women who show up for services wearing provacative clothing. Plunging necklines, strapless tops, skin-tight short skirts and fishnet hose were not unknown among the teenagers/young adults at my previous church. I thought we were supposed to be a witness in an evil world, not a reflection of it! Or maybe I'm just getting old. LOL

An 'altar veil'...used to have to bobby pin them to your hair...and have one in your purse, at the ready at all times (at least when I was a little girl in Catholic school).

But what is nice in one persons eyes, my not be nice "enough" in anothers.

And then they go home in their Jaguars and Mercedes. They know from 'nice'.

"Woodstock-era Baby Boomer hippies are all a bunch of lazy, atheistic slobs."

As well as we post-Gen Xers. But the problem is that there's nothing TO wear that's nice enough. So just dress the best one can and then be enthusiastic enough at the service and whatnot to "make up" for it.

Looking you best isn't what you can afford but that you look the best in what you have. (your lifestyle) My grandfather died very wealth. He was a farmer and wore overalls. On Sundays he wore his best clean overalls (his sunday clothes) and a hat that he took off as he went into church. I don't begrudge women for the bonnets and finary but I also don't think I should be judged if I dress more casual.

The weather is difficult... we aren't used to weather in the low 50s upper 40s this time of year. She probably was freezing and didn't have anything else. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

But like I said before, I mistook his senility for Gen-X whinerism.

I'm a Woodstock-era Baby Boomer hippie myself.
My opinion is based on 5 decades of first-hand observation.

I'm glad you brought this up. Could somebody here please explain to this Jew what bunnies, eggs and bonnets have to do with the resurrection of Christ?

$$$ for the merchants. A Google search finds this explanation. More folklore imported to America and commercialized.

If she had been my daughter she would have been wearing the SS guys coat lol. I wonder if they had worn slacks like Grandma if they would have looked so sulky :') I thought Barbara Sr. and the other woman getting off the copter looked just fine.

Call me crazy, but I'm much more certain that the Lord would rather see you at a church praising his resurection than showing off your new 3 piece armani.

Exactly. Who are you going to church for? God or everyone else? Who are worried about impressing? Think He cares what you're wearing?

Early-onset Altzheimers -- how sad for you Nah, I have just had it with the Gen-Xers and Y-ers saying such dribble. Dribble from on of our own OTOH...

This was a case of mistaken identity. But still think that more good came out of the BB than bad.

Yeah, can you imagine a girl even OWNING a veil these days?

AS far as dressing up/down... I know some people that wear suits to church that seem like the type of bluenoses that are pious and dangit they're going to let you know about it. Then there are others who seem quite at ease that way and very welcoming.

Me, I sing in the choir so I get out of it by wearing robes every Sunday. I make it my business to take it home and clean them before Easter Sunday. This year I did so and forgot them in my closet and had to poach a filthy set from someone who wasn't there.
