Whatever happened to dressing up on Easter Sunday?
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | Saturday, April 10, 2004 | Alyson Walls

Although famed musical composer Irving Berlin thought them lovely enough to write a sonnet, nowadays few women are donning Easter bonnets.

In fact, you're more apt to see wrinkled khakis and rumpled polo shirts than pressed suits and pastel pumps at church on Sunday.

While Easter Sunday has traditionally been the day to show off your new spring finery, America has become a nation that dresses down, and not just on "casual Fridays" in the office.

New york became a hell hole and no one wanted to chance being mugged on Sunday. Thus, the Easter Parade was cancelled.

Good reply. But my problem with it is that while we dress up for business meetings, etc. we do it for a different reason. The people in the meeting do care about materialistic nonsense. God, I believe is another matter altogether. I will freely admit to wearing comfortable clothing when not required to do otherwise. At home I'm in t-shirts or sweatshirts, jeans an comfortable shoes. But I cannot reconcile going to a business meeting or whatever and going to church as being the same thing. One is a worldly journey, the other is a spiritual journey where the things of the world mean little to nothing. As for others, I cannot speak for them, but for myself I deny the assertion that I dress as I do because I'm making some statement about how I really feel about something. I wouldn't use something so piddly as clothing to make such a statement, I would voice it for all to hear.

Also, I am not putting down anyone who dresses up for church, as I said, more power to them. But for those who judge others by what they weaer, they make a grave mistake. They have no idea what is in the hearts of those other people and have no right to judge them for it. Just because one person's standards dictate they dress up for church does not mean all people's standards dictate likewise, and that makes neither one more right.

He deoes indeed know the real reason behind why we dress as we do, and He knows that some of us don't see how looking pretty means a whit about how we feel about Him.

We should examine our motives more closely, yes, but who are we to judge the motives of others when they are doing no harm? After all, WE don't know what's in that person's heart, only that person and God know, let it be between them without our interference.

I just think it's much ado about nothing, church should not be a fashion show, or a who's who of dress and appearance.

Again, I don't mean to be confrontational, just bothers me when I see so much hubbub about something so insignificant as what one wears to church. And this from a catholic who loves his faith deeply.

God Bless you and go in peace.

You know something? I am so tired of your Johnny One-Note whining tirades agains the Baby Boom. That is all you ever post (except when you Bush Bash) and it is of no elucidation, light or even reason.

You are a whining brat jerk of the first order. Typical of GenX.

I don't think Willie is GenX. I think he considers Boomers as young whippersnappers.

Interesting that I can't tell them apart. Senility, whining Gen-X, hard to differentiate.

Willie didn't whine, isn't a brat or a jerk. He simply posted an article about the change in fashion on Easter Sunday...it is nice to read the differing opinions and styles from different parts of the country.

Lighten up...me thinks you found bunny poop, not chocolates in your basket this morning.

Let me define my "Nope":)

Nope, according to the "worlds" standards.

I DID clean up, wash my hair and comb it, put on clean pressed jeans and a three button with collar shirt, clean shoes.

Now for a person who usually doesn't do much more then run my fingers thru my hair in the morning, wear the same jeans and T-shirts for 3 days, and boots with spurs usually covered in horse manure, IMO, today I was dressed up:).

But for most of the pretend, do-goody, holier then thou church going, sparking clean "Christians", I was far from dressed up.

:)

From his post #1:

Woodstock-era Baby Boomer hippies are all a bunch of lazy, atheistic slobs.

That is whining and being a jerk. But like I said before, I mistook his senility for Gen-X whinerism.

Well, people will dress up nicely to see the Pres or to out to a party but, they won't dress up nicely to see Our Lord.

You summed it up perfectly. I was shocked at how many people at my church today looked as if they were just going out to lunch at Big Boys and not to an Easter Service.

In other words you looked you best. To me that is all that matters. If I want to wear a dress I do but I resent people telling me I have too.

I think hiding Easter eggs is a derivation of the Passover custom of hiding the Afikoman and eating the boiled egg at the start of the meal.

Bonnets are because Ladies of old, unlike the shameless hussies of today, would cover their heads in church. They would all get a new bonnet at Eastertide and try to outdo each other. I imagine during Lent they were only allowed to wear a doily.
