Coors to run for Senate

Brewery giant Pete Coors will enter Colorado's U.S. Senate race today, potentially giving Republicans a well-known and well-financed candidate to challenge Ken Salazar, the Democratic attorney general.

Coors, CEO of Coors Brewing in Golden, will face former U.S. Rep. Bob Schaffer and Colorado Springs lawyer Dan O'Bryant in the Republican primary to replace retiring Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell.

I don't care for light beers in general. If I wanted lite beer, I'd put an ice cube in it.

For an easy-drinking mass-produced beer, Coors uisn't too bad.

My favorite is Coors Winterfest, a holiday/seasonal beer they produce. Good flavor and a little more body than the usual Coors fare.

I haven't seen it in stores the last two years. Maybe they stopped producing it. Anyone know for sure?

The problem I have with American beers in general is they are too light. I prefer a heavier European brew with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

I guess the American market prefers lighter beers.

I'm a Guinness man myself. But if I want a non-stout, I'll have a Sam Adams or (if they don't have it) a Heineken. Another of my favorite beers is Elm City, which is only available in certain parts of Connecticut (but alas, I haven't had one in years).

BTW, Dan, I'm heading over to Michigan in a few weeks (I'll probably hit Detroit, Ann Arbor, Frankenmuth, Lansing, Holland, Traverse City, and several places in the eastern UP). Any local beers you would care to recommend?

Coors's most enduring contribution to the conservative cause was the establishment of the Heritage Foundation, begun with a $250,000 grant from Coors in 1973.

I do actually.

In Webberville(Between Lansing and Brighton on I-96), there's a place called the Michigan Brewing Company. There's about 12 different beers there last I heard. I like their Mackinac Pale Ale quite a bit. It's right behind the Big Mobil Station there at the expressway.

There's a Microbrew in Novi(Detroit suburb about 1/2way between Detroit and Brighton near I-96) that's good too. Local Color(I had their pale ale). Grand River(the main road that goes along I-96), just east of Novi Rd.

Big Buck in Gaylord(North Michigan) and Auburn Hills I've heard was good, but never had a chance to go there yet.

Bells is "alright" but a lot of people love it. They are based in Kalamazoo. I've only had their bottles, not draft though so that goes into consideration.

Giant Coors Can Invades Military Encampment

Never underestimate the power and ingenuity of our men in Vietnam. The following story offers fitting proof of this statement. Our story began in 1967 at Fort Carson, near Colorado Springs, Colo, when a small group of soldiers from this base made a trip to Denver and a subsequent tour through the Coors brewery in Golden. Such a good time was had by all that several of the men were converted to Coors Beer.

Later, in 1968, these same men were re-assigned to the 189th Assault Helicopter Company in Pleiku, Vietnam. Though they were unable to get their favorite liquid refreshment in their new and foreign surroundings, their loyalty to Coors did not diminish. This loyalty was manifested in the re-design of some of their Company's combat equipment.

Sp/5 Tom Tucker, from Tucson, Arizona, wrote his parents asking that they send him an empty Coors "Tall Can" and the matching enamel paint to go with it. His father, also a loyal Coors customer, spent the next three weeks visiting paint stores in the Tucson area--with Coors can in hand--in an effort to secure the right paint.

Within two months, the "Tall Can" and paint arrived in Pleiku. From here on it was "easy". Specialists Tucker and Robert E. Johnson of San Antonio, Texas went to work painting an exact replica of the Coors can on their helicopter rocket pods. The rocket pods hold several rockets each, which are fired from the pods when the helicopters are in flight over a combat zone.

Thanks to these two ingenious young men, Coors has become a distinctive part of the 189th's flying fortress. It is conceivable that the newspaper headlines in Hanoi occasionally read now, "GIANT COORS CAN INVADES MILITARY ENCAMPMENT".

Thanks for the recommendations. I assume Brighton is in your home county of Livingston? Livingston County isn't on our itinerary, although I guess we'll drive through it when we go to Frankenmuth. Whatever beer I have on the way better not spoil my appetite, since we're heading to Zehnder's. : )
