RUSH: All right, Ted Kennedy. What is there to say? I mean he's the old Jurassic Park dinosaur, this party, he doesn't represent the future, he's angry at me and conspiratorial; he's got conspiracy theories to explain everything. Bush had him in the White House, let him write the education bill, invited his family up there to the White House theater with popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers, to watch a JFK movie that Kevin Costner is in. What's it gotten Bush? I'll let you hear what it's gotten Bush. Here's yesterday, Kennedy, first off, the Brookings instituted, a portion of his remarks. KENNEDY: This administration has failed to live up to basic standards of open and candid debate. On issue after issue, they tell the American people one thing and do another. They repeatedly invent facts to support their preconceived agenda. Facts which administration officials knew, or should have known were not true. This pattern has prevailed since President Bush's earliest days in office. And as a result, this president has now created the largest credibility gap since Richard Nixon. He has broken the basic bond of trust with the American people. In recent months it has become increasingly clear that the Bush administration misled the American people about the threat to the nation posed by the Iraqi regime.
RUSH: It sounds good, it's all well and good. Democrats will eat it up. There's only one problem, and this is typical of what Democrats do. They presume to speak for the American people when they do not. And this is what they cannot get through their heads. They no longer speak for the American people. They are not the party that represents the majority of thinking in this country.
Now, they may win their elections now and then, and they may get more Democrats' votes than other parties, but they do not represent the majority of thought. For senator Kennedy to say that Bush has created the largest credibility gap since Nixon, it's in his mind, it's in the minds of the Democrats and they're frustrated they can't make you believe it. And the reason they can't make you believe it is because it's not true. And why isn't it true? It's because the people of this country trust George Bush personally. And even that is in his polling data. You know, his personal approval numbers have always been sky high. His trust worthiness is always sky high. The people do not believe George Bush is misleading them or lying to them; Democrats do, but they're frustrated they can't make the majority of Americans think this. They can't because they can't spin it. And they've given it their best shot; they still can't. So Kennedy is out there, he's all frustrated so he moved from the Brookings Institute to Larry King Live last night. And King said, after the question, what do you want to do next, direct? He said, a"re you calling this administration liars?"
KENNEDY: I think this administration misled the American people and the world with Iraq. Iraq didn't have weapons of mass destruction, it wasn't tied to Al-Qaeda. What we should have been focusing on is Al-Qaeda, and we've also seen that with the Medicare bill. And I think one of the most important things that we can do is have an administration that we can work with. We all have philosophical differences, but I found that I could work with President Reagan on arms control, I worked with Bush I on the Americans with Disability Act, along with Tom Harkin and others, we worked in a bipartisan way. I was rather startled, I was rather surprised that after we had the down payment on education suddenly we stopped the funding and it went in a different way. RUSH: Now, this is interesting. He says we need to have an administration we can work with. What Democrats mean when they say that is: we need an administration we can roll, we need an administration that's going to buckle to us, we need an administration that's afraid of us, we need an administration that we can intimidate, we need an administration that is going to go along with what we want, we need an administration that is going to compromise it's principles. Yeah, Americans with Disabilities Act, great piece of legislation. He throws out this Medicare thing in a just a haphazard one-sentence way as though there's been some sort of deceit against the Democrats on the Medicare, but the only thing they're upset about the Medicare bill is that it's Bush's and not theirs. But, you know, he talks about philosophical differences, he could work with President Reagan on arms. That is one of the biggest shams I've ever heard.
The Democrats, led by Ted Kennedy, stood in the way of the deployment of Pershing II missiles in Europe that were one of the two or three final straws, nails in the coffin of the Soviet Union. They don't work with anybody. And it's being illustrated in this administration better than any other. Reagan would be a second, you know, close second. Bush has gone out of his way to work with these people. He's given them everything they want on the domestic side. He's given them all the spending they could have mustered themselves. He gave them the biggest education bill. He's given them this new entitlement, he's given them all kinds of things, immigration, you name it, the whole domestic agenda has been aimed at forging ties with people like Ted Kennedy. And you can see what it got Bush. It got him this: nothing but pure, unadulterated hatred from these people who don't want to get along with him. This has been my point all along. Why should we want to get along with them? As far as I'm concerned they are to be defeated in the arena of political ideas. They represent what we disagree with. they don't represent any opportunity for compromise when it comes to principles, not as far as I'm concerned, so it's time to defeat them, not get along with them. They don't want to get along with anybody. And all you have to do is listen to them speak to understand it. Couple more Kennedy bites and then we'll drop the hammer, right after this.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
RUSH: This is back now, the Brookings institute, this is probably the pièce de résistance of what Senator Kennedy had to say.
KENNEDY: The result is a massive and very dangerous crisis in our foreign policy. We have lost the respect of other nations in the world. Where do we go to get back our respect? How do we reestablish the working relationships we need with other countries to win the war on terrorism and advance the ideals we share? And how can we possibly expect President Bush to do that? He's the problem, not the solution. Iraq is George Bush's Vietnam, and this country needs a new president. RUSH: All right, let's forget the insulting nature of this, and forget that it was his brother who started us in Vietnam, really ramped us up there. Eisenhower first sent advisors, but it was JFK that got us ramped up. Let's forget all that and let's go back earlier -- just for the moment -- and let's go back earlier in this bite where he says "we have lost the respect of other nations and the world, where do we go to get back our respect?" We haven't lost respect in the rest of the world. We have lost respect with France, maybe, and Germany, but even that I don't think we've lost their respect, at all. I think they fear us. I think they're in competition with us, Senator Kennedy. And the last thing we need to do is bow down and be subordinate to them and these other western European socialists that you would rather have their like, love, and respect; you would have that more than you fear what terrorists can do to the people of this country, and this is what your party is known for. Your party is known for caring more about people and nations that cannot and will not help us like us, than you are concerned with who it is that's trying to kill the people of this country.
You are making that clear, and that makes you, Senator Kennedy, the problem. You and your party. You who wear blinders, you who cannot see what is happening right before your very eyes because you are so blinded by your quest and your need for political power. And your quest for political power is dangerous because you seek to reign over people. You seek to rule people. You seek to treat people as though they are ignoramuses and do not know what's best for themselves. You seek to restrict the freedom and movement of people under the guise that you're helping them. And we've tried it and we've tried it and we've tried it, and the people that you've targeted for help are still miserable, the people that you've targeted for assistance are still complaining about their lot in life, they are still miserable and still moaning. Your efforts to help people have not worked, Senator Kennedy, and now you want to take these countries like France and Germany who have made the same mistakes with their populations that you and your cohorts have made in America, and you want them to respect and like us?
It is time for a change in vision, sir, it's time for a change in perspective. We must look outward, not inward. We must have confidence to look outward and see who are our friends and who are not our friends when it comes to defending the people of this country. And if you would change and maybe have that vision, your party would have a little bit more respect than it's got today, and you wouldn't have to run around making up phony baloney, plastic banana, good-time rock 'n' roller lies about one man who's trying to do what you are incapable of doing. You are making it so patently obvious that you are governed and ruled by bitterness and unhappiness that you are giving people no reason whatsoever to wish to join you. Nobody wants to hang around with a bunch of angry, embittered old fools who yearn and long for a time 30, 40, 50 years ago which cannot be again.
It is utterly amazing to sit here and listen to this pap. How do we reestablish the working relationships we need? That is not the question, sir. We do not need to ask how do we reestablish the working relations we need, because we have them. We are doing what needs to be done that the rest of the world cannot and will not do. We are engaging in leadership. We are showing the way. We are thankfully led by a man who understands what we face and is willing to confront it, rather than hide behind a bunch of European neighbors who themselves are being bamboozled. Did you see what happened to Spain? Spain said, "okay, we're pulling out of Iraq," and the terrorists said, "if you don't pull out of Afghanistan, we're going to hit you again." Spain is proving that the western European way is wrong, senator.
The dims are as bad as teddy's liver, rotten to the core.
