Avowing ``there is no greater threat to homeland security'' than urban combat assault weapons, the Rev. Jesse Jackson is calling on victims of violence to fight for gun safety laws.
``There is no socially useful purpose for AK-47s or Uzis,'' the charismatic civil rights champion said yesterday, speaking at a Grove Hall rally for next month's Million Mom March in Washington, D.C.
This year's fourth annual procession, to step off Mother's Day, May 9, will serve as a wakeup call to Congress and President Bush [related, bio]. A federal law passed in 1994 banning the sale of assault weapons is due to lapse in September.
Hand-cannons like the bullet-spraying Intratec 9 mm Luger may seem like nothing more than Hollywood props to the public, but ``this type of weapon is a very real threat,'' Boston police Superintendent James Claiborne said.
Police were more than surprised when they found just such a high-powered pistol - along with a 9 mm handgun - in a prostitute's purse stolen from Dudley Station last week.
Barbara Felton of Orleans, who'll lend her voice of experience to next month's march, admits she was ``ambivalent'' toward guns until her 27-year-old son Mark, an elementary school teaching assistant, committed suicide with a pal's shotgun four years ago. ``I guess I was naive,'' Felton said. ``I know that Mark will never come back. I just hope and pray that I will somehow be influential in saving lives.''
For YEARS, gun safety was OUR term. Andrew McKelvey is trying to steal it by renaming 'gun control' as so called 'gun safety'.
Anyone someone tries to sell 'gun safety' to me, I ask them if they are an NRA certified instructor or even attended their class. If they haven't, then they haven't got a clue on what gun safety REALLY is.(In other words..."The rules").
I support gun safety.
Sorry for your loss, lady, but unless this was one of those evil assault shotguns it isn't covered under the ban you wish to foist on us permanently.
bump
Add those numbers to the death toll and broadcast it every time a gun is used defensively and see what public opinion thinks about the matter.
Eventually, they are going to take the guns. I don't see how it isn't going to happen. We can beat our chests all we want, when a squad shows up dressed in black and your chest is dotted with red light, you will hand them over and provide them with a combination to your safe. If you don't and you resist, you'll either be 1) eliminated or 2) subdued and arrested and imprisoned.
The way things are going--this will happen in our lifetime.
On another thread, freepers are e-mailing someone demanding that campaign finance reform be enforced, and enforced with a vengeance.
Tell me what's wrong with that picture. And then tell me it won't happen with guns, something that an even greater number of people feel should be controlled.
Bring it on, Jesse !!!
There are some people who believe, rightly or wrongly, that the nastier a firearm looks, the more likely it will be to make an attacker realize the error of his ways before he has to be shot. I expect that this is true, up to a certain point. Someone who confronts a home invader with a North American Arms .22LR mini revolver will likely not get the same reaction as someone who confronts the invader with a Mossberg 500. But I don't know that the ugliness of the Tec-9 would increase its deterrent value over, say, the nice sleek lines of a Luger.
A few statistics I like, which are harder to dispute: even if every single crime involving a firearm involved a different one (doubtful), that would still leave well over 99% of firearms that aren't used criminally.
There are four BILLION rounds of ammo used every year--the vast majority of it by law-abiding shooters. By contrast, all of the ammunition used criminally in a year could fit in a reasonable-sized closet.
Even if every criminal act required a different firearm (again, doubtful), it would not take very many small machine shops to keep the entire criminal underground in the U.S. supplied indefinitely.
Imagine if a white religious leader was out there suggesting that guns should be less accessible to the black population.
And the arguement re: the threat to Homeland Security is absurd. Due to the fact that we are on the radar screen of murderous Islamic fanatics, and have been for decades, a practical long-term improvement in our security would be a weapons training program for young citizens, with shooting sports encouraged at schools. Perhaps Jesse could provide free ranges and ammo for people, rather than buy the Chicago Tribune, to further his interests in enhancing gun safety?
Wife's point: What kind of waepons do Jesse's security folks carry around? And why? How socially useful is that?
Ya know, criminals are kinda like that. They steal!!
A .45 1911 isn't bad looking and has more deterrent value than either
It's easier to rally support to ban the "bullet-spraying 9 mm Luger Intratec hand-cannon" than the 9mm handgun. One step at a time, ya know.
I have a KG 99 (which is basically a short barreled and slightly smaller overall version of the TEC 9). These guns are really not good for much in terms of accurate shooting in the semi auto versions sold to civilians. The quality isn't all that bad, they're just too large, clunky and hard to aim. A Glock 17 with a 30 round mag would be much deadlier in the hands of anyone familiar with a hand gun. OTOH, they (the whole style, the UZI, the TEC's, the KG's) make a lot of sense in the full auto SMG versions (what they were designed to be); much easier to control than full auto glocks and readily adaptable to suppressors for security use and folding stocks for more accurately aimed, longer range, use.
BTW, I also have a MAC 11/9, TEC 22, and a few others of that genre. Don't really like them, just felt an irresistable compulsion to buy them when the bans were being passed.
You coulda knocked me over widda fedda.
The Reh-vur-und Ja-ack-s'n must explain soon
What the hell was up with that boatload of Wang Jun--
For that was bound for Jesse's band of bruthahs
Why weren't they marchin' with the mill-yun muthahs?
And wazzup wit Kofi's security packing UNREGISTERED H & K MP-5s? They gonna do another Elian jackbootgram?
I didn't know that, why is it allowed? Jesse only says and does what's good for Jesse, sounds like some other Dems we could mention.
