French bishops blast Passion
Daily Times ^

Posted on 04/01/2004 7:38:53 PM PST by narses

French Roman Catholic bishops have officially denounced Mel Gibson’s controversial film The Passion of The Christ, which opened in France on Wednesday, as potentially anti-Semitic and a distortion of Christian teaching.

In an unusual statement on a commercial film, the bishops’ conference said the traditionalist Catholic Gibson had made a film that might not be anti-Semitic but “could be used to support anti-Semitic opinions”.

“In this film, the face of Christ shows through less than the obsessions of our times - the dread of evil, fascination with violence and the search for the guilty,” the information committee of the bishops’ conference declared.

The reaction in France to the graphic film about the last 12 hours of Jesus Christ’s life has been hostile, with both secular film critics and Church leaders denouncing the extreme violence of the scourging and crucifixion scenes. —Reuters

I find that if I replace "French" with "perfidous hypocrite", everything makes more sense.

Well, looks like the French will now go in droves to see the "controversy." Thanks, Bishops.

Well, you see, we can't possibly have clear lines drawn between good and evil, how could the french possibly survive if they had to make a hard decision like that?

This is weird. Catholic bishops, denouncing a film which some have criticized as too "catholic", because it might cause anti-semitism.

Well, yes. But one might have held out hope that a French BISHOP might have some sense of decency, some sense of piety, some sense of right and wrong. So much for hope in France.

ACtually, the French bishops were recently lectured by the Pontiff I believe to be more loyal and less French (course, merely lecturing is not enough, discipline is needed, which sadly has been lacking in this pontificate).

Allegedly, the French hierarchs are the ones who vetoed the Universal Indult that would have ended the only major potential schism in the last century. They are scared of the Latin Mass. The Passion IS the Latin Mass.

well, of course. btw, i heard national people's radio program "fresh air" (ain't that a misnomer) today--they had a purportedly "catholic" priest from depaul on--a veteran of the jesus institute, and asked him about the resurrection. his reply: just a metaphor.
and before i hear the anti-catholic and anti-jesuit drivel, let me say that there are many, many good catholic and jesuit priests and laypeople out there fighting the good fight. but the devil is out there as well. stay the course.

They are scared of the market. I do think if the Latin Mass was brought back on equal footing with the Novus Ordo, the Novus Ordo would lose.

"both secular film critics and (French)Church leaders denouncing"

LOL. Is there a difference?

I don't think they would know a Christian if it bit them in France. Maybe this is why their churches are so empty?

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them"

I guess issuing a statement was the best way to get their message across -- if these bishops made these comments inside Catholic churches in France on a Sunday morning there would have been nobody around to hear them.

Most people may not know this, but in France all of the Catholic churches and schools are owned by the government.

It's nowhere to be found in Spain either. Opus Dei did that.

It's the way that the 19th century Socialists demanded it and, when faced with the possibility of having to fight, go to prison, maybe even be martyred as their Catholic forefathers were, or become government employees, the bishops demonstrated that they were French first, Catholic second, and took the pay check

Somethings about France never change...
