Most people may not know this, but in France all of the Catholic churches and schools are owned by the government

It's the way that the 19th century Socialists demanded it and, when faced with the possibility of having to fight, go to prison, maybe even be martyred as their Catholic forefathers were, or become government employees, the bishops demonstrated that they were French first, Catholic second, and took the pay check
