US Promises to Punish Those Responsible for Gruesome Iraq Attacks

The top U.S. official in Iraq says Wednesday's gruesome attacks on four American civilians whose burned bodies were put on display in the town of Fallujah will not go unpunished.

"It's going to be deliberate, it will be precise and it will be overwhelming," U.S. General Mark Kimmitt said, speaking to reporters in Baghdad. He warned insurgents in the town of Fallujah to be prepared for U.S. forces to strike back following Wednesday's killing of four American contractors by a frenzied mob that dragged their charred bodies through the streets.

Televised footage of the act has provoked outrage from Americans in the United States and led U.S. administrator in Baghdad Paul Bremer to issue a warning.

"Their deaths will not go unpunished," he promised.

The White House blamed the attacks on supporters of Saddam Hussein. The remains of the four were to be turned over to the U.S. military.

A day after the attack, three American soldiers were injured in another attack near Fallujah, this time when their Humvee struck a roadside bomb.

I hate to sound jittery, but I am personally on red alert judging from everything I'm reading here today. I don't know about the rest of you, but everytime I drive over a large bridge, I kinda get the urge to make it to the other side as quickly as possible. Please be safe everyone!

We need more people in this world like your Mom. I'm afraid very few 16 year olds today would be able to handle that.

Heavenly Father, we return to give You thanks that lib's mother is resting well this night. May she be refreshed and strengthened for her surgery tomorrow afternoon ... thank You that her trust and confidence is in You and her medical team. May the surgery exceed all expectations, for You are a God who delights his children ... may her recovery be without incident, for You are a God of miracles. Encourage her family as they face these next anxious hours ... may they draw upon Your Word ... "be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God, and the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

May it be thus, O Lord, may it be thus, in the Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen ...

Bird causes power outage at LA airport; no flights affected

(04-21) 17:33 PDT LOS ANGELES (AP) --

Los Angeles International Airport suffered its third power outage in 10 days Wednesday when a bird landing on a power line forced the airport to switch to a backup energy supply, officials said.

No lights went out at the airport and no flights were delayed, though Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Donn Walker said the control tower was temporarily disconnected from the power grid as a precaution.

The 10-second outage at 5:53 a.m. came less than two weeks after another bird landing on the same line caused a blackout at the airport that delayed flights for up to 11/2 hours.

The Department of Water and Power said it will look into whether anything can be done to prevent bird-related outages in the future.

"We plan to audit the electrical system to determine if we have the appropriate infrastructure and the appropriate redundancy to ensure power reliability," said DWP board president Dominick Rubalcava.

The department will inspect all transmission lines and substations in the area and determine whether any other factors may have led to the birds' presence on the power line.

"For example, if a neighboring business left a trash bin uncovered or something like that, it's possible that it could have attracted more birds," said DWP spokeswoman Carol Tucker.

Officials are also considering installing spikes on power poles to scare birds away.

Wednesday's outage was the fourth in the area this month, Walker said. The airport blackout occurred April 12, and power outages were also reported Monday and on April 2. Monday's outage, which darkened some buildings at the airport for about two hours, was blamed on a malfunctioning transformer.

"For the most part, our backup systems work fine, and they work the way they should," Walker said. The April 12 outage "was a fluke, but flukes happen," he added.

On Tuesday, DWP officials said they had found the body of the bird believed responsible for the April 12 incident. A chef at a hotel near the airport told the Los Angeles Times he tossed the bird's carcass into a trash bin after a co-worker saw it electrocuted.

Birds and squirrels causing power outages is not new to me at all. I've seen it happen on our block when we lived in an old farm. By the way, did you see the story regarding the LA jails power outage was due to a snake coiled up in the electrical box?

We had to have a pump replaced in our well house one spring. It cost a $1,000 to repair. The problem was a horny toad fell in love with the sound of the pump, and forgive the pun, but he croaked.

Ultras chop off ears of two persons
3 militants among 6 killed
*Two HUJI activists surrender

Excelsior Special Correspondent

JAMMU, Apr 21: Three militants, two civilians and an Army soldier were killed while the militants chopped off ears of two persons including a Naib Sarpanch and two militants surrendered before security forces in separate incidents across the Jammu region since last evening.

Official sources said three foreign mercenaries were eliminated by the troops at Kalaban in Mendhar tehsil in Poonch district late this evening.

Slain militants belonged to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit, they said.

Three AK rifles and a large quantity of ammunition was recovered from the scene of encounter, they said, adding the operation was going on in the area following reports that two to three more militants were hiding in the area.

Sources said the slain militants had planned to kill NC MLA from Mendhar, Javed Rana.

Meanwhile, sources said a civilian Ali Mohd was kidnapped by the militants from his house at village Thuroo in Mahore tehsil in Udhampur district last night. His body with bullet marks was recovered by the police this morning.

Another civilian Abdul Lateef son of Abdul Ghani, a resident of village Udhyanpur in Doda was gunned down by the militants in his house late last night. The militants, numbering two, escaped after the killing.

No reasons have been ascertained so far behind the two killings, the sources said.

An encounter took place between the troops of 10 Rashtriya Rifles and a group of militants at village Dessa in Doda this morning. An Army jawan Santosh Sharma was killed in the firing while the militants escaped.

Security forces continued searches for the militants, who were suspected to be the foreign mercenaries of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit, the sources said.

Another encounter between security forces and the militants took place at village Magota in Marmat area of Doda. A woman Maluta Begum wife of Abdul Aziz was trapped in the cross-firing and got seriously injured. She has been admitted in the hospital.

Meanwhile, a group of ultras last night struck at village Morha Kalwa in Mahore tehsil of Reasi police district. They beat-up Misri Din, Naib Sarpanch of Halqa Mallas, Haji Sulla Mohd, Nambardar of Kalwa and Mohd Amkala, a Village Level Worker.

Before fleeing, the militants partially shopped off left ears of Mohd Amkala and Misri Din for taking part in the ongoing election process. Mahore falls in Udhampur-Doda Parliamentary constituency, which will go to polls on May 9 in last and final phase of polling.

Injured persons have been hospitalised. Their condition was, however, stated to be stable.

Another civilian Ghulam Hassan Gujjar, who had been kidnapped by the militants from village Dessa in Gool area, escaped from the captivity in Lapri area of Mahore yesterday. He reached his house safely last night.

Meanwhile, two militants including a Harkat-ul-Jehad Islami (HUJI) ‘area commander’ Jamal-ud-Din surrendered before security forces in Banihal area of Ramban police district today, the sources said, adding they handed over one rifle and ammunition at the time of surrender.

Our Kathua correspondent adds: Security forces, during a search operation in Billawar, today recovered two 303 rifles, two magazines, 14 rounds, one UBGL and two UBGL grenades.
