Kerry Author: Stolen FBI Files Were 'Very Explosive'

FBI files documenting Sen. John Kerry's anti-war activities that were reported stolen over the weekend could have damaged the likely Democratic nominee's presidential bid, the San Francisco author who obtained the records said Monday.

Asked about the missing files, Vietnam War historian Gerald Nicosia told CNN: "This stuff is very explosive. It's an enormous amount of information."

"The police say it was a neat and professional burglary," he explained, noting that 3,000 to 4,000 pages were missing out of a total of 20,000 pages. Burglars ignored other valuables in the house, raising questions about whether the break-in had anything to do with political damage control on behalf of the Kerry campaign.

A Kerry spokesman had no comment on the apparent theft when asked by the New York Sun over the weekend. But Nicosia said he suspects political foul play, telling the Los Angeles Times for Tuesday's edition that he is a product of the Watergate era who understands the allure of political sabotage.

While researching his book "Home to War," Nicosia obtained Kerry's FBI files in 1999. The records have already proven problematic for the Kerry campaign, forcing the candidate to reverse earlier denials that he attended a November 1971 meeting of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War where a plot to assassinate pro-war U.S. senators was discussed.

Nicosia told the Sun that the intruders likely wanted more than the three file boxes that were removed, since other boxes appear to have been rifled. He speculated that the file thieves were interrupted, perhaps scared off by a neighbor's barking dog.

Since the break-in he has trouble sleeping, he told the Times, adding, "My kids were really spooked by the burglary."

I assume since you posted you have read that he obtained them through the FOIA which is perfectly legit.

Well then let's go get them! Where do we call? We'll make copies at Kinko and dare them to steal them all.

Some trustworthy (read: passionately conservative) soul needs to file a FoI Act request and get 'em.

Hi! I heard you are looking for some FBI files. I've heard there is a woman in Washington, DC who might be able to help you. She is very skilled at obtaining FBI files on just about anyone......in fact I think she has about 900, or so........

You're trying to be funny, maybe trying a little to hard. But since the FBI files obtained by Hillary included several involving investigations into prominent Democrats as well as Republicans [including the details of FBI investigation number IP-7 1690, the investigation into the murder of US senator Birch Bayh's mistress and the appointment of an FBI suspect in the murder to a cabinet-level position by Governor Evan Bayh, Birch's son, who now holds his father's former senate seat] you just might be correct.

Indeed, if the material includes information from that VVAW *Operation Pheonix* plan, it could also inclede information from Director Hoover's *personal and confidential* files on political figures that the FBI director felt he needed some influence over, the Kennedy brothers in particular.

Speaking of which, what ever came of the reported plan to exhume Hoover's body for the post-mortem medical investigation into Hoover's death to which he was not subjected to at the time he suddenly *passed away.* Qui bono?

There've been FOIA requests to the Justice Department for information into the FBI investigation of fraud of the Farmer's Home Administration, proceeds of which misappropriated moneys were plowed into Democratic Party political campaigns in the St Louis and downstate Illinois area since 1988.

If the Justice Department stonewalls press inquiries into Kerry and the VVAW as effectively, it'll be 2020 before there's even a chance that that public information is released.

Kerry's brother Cameron has experience with break-ins at election time.

I saw this guy on the morning news and he said it must have been Republicans. I think he just wants to get his few seconds of fame. Kerry has not released his military records to anyone or they would be out by now.

Problem is, it took him 11 years to get them (I read somewhere). I agree with the poster who said this "burglary" is to immunize Kerry from any release by Bush of new FBI info. If anything contained in the files is released they'll blame the burglary on the Bushies or claim that "privileged" FBI data was illegally released.

Let's see now...a Kerry supporter got copies of originals still in safe place; left doors open but the burglary looks professional; info in copies is now deemed "explosive," like Republicans would really crave it, and for good measure the guy now suffers PTSD.

He's probably got some attention-deficit disorder too, and this was his best shot at getting attention.

If you're not a pro and you want to stage a burglary, you leave the doors open rather than guess how a pro would do it. And of course if you have a heap of explosive info on a presidential candidate, you don't leave the doors open for any other reason.

Nothing to do now but wait for this fellow to plant the stolen paperwork in Karl Rove's trashcans. (The place has already been thoroughly cased by a mob of Rats.)

That number of pages could easily fit on about three CDs in Adobe PDF format. It would take less than half a DVD. This is either a setup or the Nicosia is an idiot.

It was over 1100 files, and I do not remember ever hearing that they were returned. You know, it was the old smoke job, that as long as people were talking about the obtaining of the files, etc. no one seemed to think it was important to ask if they'd been returned. I'm sure 'she' got a good laugh about that.

File another request....but they are extremely slow.

And there is no guarantee that they will release them.

PERSONAL FBI files can only be released with the approval of the person.

These files are not PERSONAL FBI files, but are reports about the group VVAW.

They can be obtained via FOIA.

You could call him at his California office and see if he would give you into on what files he requested that were stolen, but I doubt he would.

These are not his personal military records...again.

They are FBI files on the VVAW.
