I've gotten word tonight that our FRiend Budge could REALLY use some support. He is down and could REALLY use a lift.

He is one tough cookie but everyone needs a lift now and then.

Pain is an awful thing. But sometimes it can just wear you down.

We had a pretty good scare recently with Budge. Thankfully it turned out to be Kidney Stones. Taking care of the problem wasn't fun but at least Budge will be ok. But now he has pulled some rib cartilage some how or another and those things combined have just taken a toll.

So if you could all just give him a prayer and some encouragement, it would sure lift his spirits MORE THAN YOU WILL EVER KNOW!!

I don't know if you have the option of a new doc or not.

I still think an MRI would be better at detecting where the stone was.

Did you ask the doc what he'd want done were he in your shoes?

If not, phone him and ask him, please!

I'm real sorry to read about this situation after your visit with the doc. I expected much better of him.

I don't know if there is a specialist in your area or not.

If not, perhaps Jim would support our tracking the nearest one down for you and getting you there with FREEPER help.

I suspect the doc has never had a kidney stone. It's amazing how insensitive, clueless and thoughtless otherwise quality MD's can be when it's not their pain involved.

Are you convinced this doc is the best in the area for that problem?

Hope things go well, and he decides to be a bit more helpful at next consult. You might consider an imaging ultrasound -- should be able to get one for under $200.

I'm no doctor, but it may be that ultrasound, or even x-ray, provides the better imaging of a stone, better than an MRI. I'd would be interesed in hearing professional and expert opinions re same.

Old friend, you're not quite as old as me, but if you can, chalk it up to the creakiness of old age. And as Maurice Chevalier once said, "Old age is fine, when you consider the alternative."

Best wishes. I hope you're out of your pain shortly. (I had a doctor once say to me, "I pronounce you cured." After minor surgery for that problem some 15 years later, I was in fact cured. Sometimes doctors are vegue because they just don't know what's going on and want to cover their fannies. LOL.)

My urologist has told me that an IVP is pretty much the gold standard for stones: uric acid stones do not show up well on x-rays. I've had ultrasounds, too. Ultrasounds are painless. IVP involves a needle and I seem to recall a terrible amount of bladder pressure. Usually when I pass a stone, I end up with a nasty infection, which also causes pain in the same area.

Finally talked to the doctor. He told me nothing more than what he said last Monday, that the stone is not in the kidney, he doesn't know where it is.

Has he done any tests to find were the stone is and to make sure it is a stone?

If not .. Budge, please .. please get a second opinon

I just know that typically MRI's seem to have finer resolution than CAT scans.

I just know that I'm really unhappy with Budge's distress and the reported seeming cavalier, casual attitude of the MD concerned.

I wager he'd not have been so casual with his own such stone.

My son just went through a terribly painful procedure at the hospital. His 11th in 6-7 months. FReepers were faithful to pray for ease of pain and healing. The prayers really made a difference, especially in this latest surgery.

MRI's good for soft tissue. The hydrogen in the water, in the fats and proteins, that's the nuclei's spinning and resonating "magnetically". Not so good for the harder stuff. X-rays good for hard stuff - stones. CT's (tomographic x-rays) good for hard stuff and mixes. Ultrasound good in the borders between hards and softs. Just my opinion.

My doctor is the best in this small town, but like several of you, I really would like a second opinion.

Little Rock is where the 'better' doctors are, along with the MRI and other fancy equipment (no MRI in Pine Bluff).

I've talked to others here but, like me, have no idea who would be a good urologist to contact there. How does one find out that kind of information?

I trust my doctor here, and I may be "jumping the gun" wanting to get a second opinion. But if that sucker is in my bladder, is there any way to find out? Wouldn't blood showup in my urine if it is?

I know I'm still complaining about my back pain, but by the same token, I do have back problems, which raises another question: Would a stone in the bladder cause back pain?

I think a trip to my chiropractor tommorrow might answer some of my questions. I'll let you know what he says as soon as I find out. Who knows, it may be nothing but age!
