They might even hide guns in the ovens.

the WTC didn't have an air wing on it and a naval task
force surrounding it.
I have a alternative headline; "Tomorrow you will
witness the slaughter of 10 guys that thought that
it was easy to destroy an aircraft carrier."
subtitle; "Where are we gonna find *another* 720
virgins?"

Maybe the nuke isn't coming very far to make the trip to Japanese waters.

It's called sabotage. Someone on the inside with access to the ship. Possibly on the standing crew. This was my first thought also. The carrier has more than enough weaponry on board for its own complete destruction. Somehow get an alternate fuse onto even one bomb in a magazine and the whole thing goes up.
I would pay extra attention to any muslims in the crew.

I wish all too well that I could keep you company tonight, but my old buddy Al is putting me to sleep. His full name is Alcohol, but if you've known him as long as I have, you can just call him Al.
I wonder if you got my last freepmail, or if maybe it was too heavy?

Unfortunately, that's how a torpedo works, nowadays. It explodes beneath the target, creating an "air bubble" large enough so that the target "falls in", resulting in the breaking of the target's back due to the length and sudden loss of support in the center.
That's in addition to the ones that punch in a hole or two. There's a number of different designs, and they do not need to be nuclear.
Believe me, there are diesel-powered submarines which could easily sink a carrier, if undetected for long enough.

IMHO, Iran will take some doing, but both Iran and NK will happen on their own.
Syria is so close to falling, who knows if they will even need 'help?'

"What kind of defense can the carrier put up while in its own port? Or visiting a foreigh port-of-call?" None. The weapons systems are secured in port.

Carriers don't have sonar. They cruise with destroyers, which do.
The destroyers have lots of other goodies. Hence the name, "Destroyers."

Has SeaRAM been deployed yet?For all the optimism around here, I'd say yes.
And thanks for the refresher on missile technology. I said Silkworm before, but that is so 80s...I meant to name the Sunburn.

I think ovens on USN carriers are used more frequently than every two weeks.

Before the WOT, the Kitty Hawk was the only U.S. naval vessel authorized to fly the flag known as the First Navy Jack (thirteen red and white horizontal stripes, a rattlesnake and the wording " DON'T TREAD ON ME ) During current operations, I understand all U.S.N. vessels have authorization to fly her. Hope the memory and actions of brave Americans almost 250 years ago provide some inspiration to our present day warriors.

Good point. And given the success of the Madrid bombings, an attack on or affecting one of our allies (such as Japan) would be quite tempting for them.
