Ever see the communication systems in the military? Especially around a carrier group. You might want to read a Tom Clancey novel to get a whiff of an idea of our military prowess. Amd Rummy's making it even better.

Re:
Maybe they'll take a poke at a decommissioned carrier that sits as a floating museum? USS Ranger, Lexington, or Hornet are all civilian property. Hope you are wrong, planning on taking a trip this summer to all of the CVs & BBs on the east & gulf coast...

I do think it's extremely unlikely, and I suspect the navy has a variety of plans in place that work to prevent any such attack. It's not impossible, but I'd be surprised if anything of note happened.
To: Fitzcarraldo
Gee, ya think if they were smart enough to figure out a way to take out a carrier that has a flotilla of escort ships, they would be smart enough NOT to tip everybody off?

If they did that, my guess would be because the nukes already on the carrier and they just happen to have access to it through an insider.

"That infiltrator would have to get through some very tough Marines, with assault rifles, first." With a nuke, he only has to park in the parking lot of the correct harbor.

"Maybe the carrier's own crew? A muslim infiltrator setting off a nuclear weapon??" That would be my guess too.
That would be some trick. Seaman Abdullah bin Mahmood Muhammad is going to walk up the the Marines guarding the nuclear weapons and say, what? The captain wants me to bring a tactical nuke up to the bridge so he can show it to some VIPs.

A nuclear mine laying on the seabed?

Never mind my comment about the Cole... I was misremembering it.
But my other statements stand - with a target like this, I would expect either a sabotage attempt, or an attack during refueling (as in the bombing of the Cole).
By the way, was doing a little research and found this about the Cole, good news, very interesting and didn't see a thread about it even though it's over a week old. Made it's own thread.

I'm just saying how I would attempt to do it if I were to attempt to do it - which I would not.Heh! I just realized that might sound kind of funny (stating the obvious). What I mean is that I would not attempt to strike an aircraft carrier in the first place, if I were a terrorist. I would select a vastly softer target.
If I were gonna throw away my life I wouldn't wanna look like a dumbass failure on the way out.. ;^)

The terrorist "are" trying to kill you, but our country in mass are out there trying to protect your precious entrails.
Thanks for that visual by the way... Egads.

God forbid, but this would result in some serious slaughter being delivered upon terrorists everywhere. We are already in an all-out war against "terrorists everywhere." What more can we do on the offensive front? (On the defensive front, we could clamp down tight on border security. .....something that should've been done a long time ago). So the only thing left to do offensively is what we did in Iraq and Afghanistan -- take out terrorist-sponsoring (and harboring) regimes themselves. But who next? ....Syria?.....Iran? Or do we take out the center of Islam itself?
To: Spruce
One backpack nuke that went missing from the Soviet Union would be enough to do the trick. A fishing boat "in trouble" could get close enough. Hope this is a load of crap. It could also be a diversion to give them a better opportunity on other targets.

Any carriers sitting empty as a museum that would be vulnerable?
