Toy Guns...
Me

Posted on 03/27/2004 6:53:16 PM PST by Long Cut

I've got a question for all the shootists and 2A guys out there...I've got a young (8 month old) son, and I want "Short Cut" to grow up right as regards firearms. The way I started, and as many of us did, was with toy guns. Many hours of my childhood were spent playing Soldier, Cops-n-robbers, and other games with my friends.

My dad never, however, hesitsted to teach me NEVER to point my toys at other people (well, him and mom, anyway.)

So, what I want to know is, are ANY companies still making toy guns that at least resemble reality? I cannot seem to find any decently-made ones on any toy shelves nowadays, as it appears the Succer Moms have succeeded in removing them from the toy stores.

Surely someone is bucking that trend out there, and wants to make a profit in this unserved market. If anyone has knowledge of one, or knows where to find such things, please respond with links and pics, if possible.

Please also, try to omit the "air-soft" guns, as those are a bit much for a pre-teen kid to handle (not to mention Dear 'ol Dad's wallet).

Oh, you can also use this thread to bash the Left over the head for stealing yet another good piece of childhood away, and by all means, share some of your more fun stories with us as well.

Thanks for any help offered!

Go to google type in,toy guns replica, you will get several options. If traveling check out civil war battlefield gift shops. But don't worry if you raise him right he will make guns out of Lincoln Logs if he has to. Real boys are creative.

Creative? LOL! He's already figured out hoe to escape from his crib. Unfortunately, he has NOT mastered a parachute-fall so his mother gets fits when he does his "Great Escape" routine.

Hey Tonk...we had this same issue at our house~ Just did this whole "find a gun" thing!
The dollar store was GREAT...and for a DOLLAR??? CAN YOU BEAT THAT?
Also, check out the site:

www.realistictoyguns.com

I like the "fake" looking guns, so the dollar store was my favorite...but for dad?? Well, the site was better~

GOOD LUCK!

And to all... as far as the RULES go... you can't point a toy gun at anyone...unless they are playing the game too (and their mom says it is OK...we are in Washington after all~ Where my neighbor doesn't even say the word GUN she spells it:-)

Here is a good lesson someone told me he used on his kids.. He taught his kids that if they shot at or killed anything OTHER THAN BAD GUYS, they would have to eat it. They did get into their Dad's gun cabinet once, I was told, and they shot some squirrels.. Guess what they had for dinner.. no joke!

I know some people wouldn't mind that .. but these kids learned a valuable lesson. The kids, now grown, told me it also made them stop pointing their pretend guns at their at their Mom.

I don't know if they would have what you are looking for HERE

Funny thing, my Brother & his wife would not even let their kids play with toy guns...then they moved to Utah & bought a little ranch. Now even the youngest (5 years) get to go out with BB guns. These kids have full respect & knowledge of fire power. I was raised the same & went target shooting & hunting all my young life. My son (city boy bound) had almost no access to fire arms & actually worries me when we do go shooting. I believe firearms shoulf be introduced early but with training & the greatest of respect. I also believe they should only be accessable under parental supervision not only because of our own kids but especially those children unexperianced that enter into the houshold.

Okay, just FYI, my opinion on the matter: my preference is to not give a kid anything that looks like a gun that makes noise or with which he can go *bang* at a ytoung imaginative age, though certainly thousands of kids otherwise raised have turned out fine. But I'd rather see him with something that does more than make noise when he pulls a trigger, whether it's a squirt gun that shoots water, a firer of foam rubber balls or sponge mini-sausages that annoy the cat, or the more serious spring-loaded plastic dart projectors, one step up the ladder that requires additional supervision and responsibility on the part of the user.

Grandparents and playmates may intrerrupt this grand plan; but it's worth a try. And if at a later stage the kid wants a 1:1 sized replica, airsoft or otherwise, that resembles one of dad's pieces, that too may be another step up that ladder after the lession from the previous pieces has set in: pull the trigger and something comes out the front end; maybe accurately, maybe dangerous, better be careful with these things.

In the case of my own kid, he got his first rifle from me for his 12th birthday, and I figured he was responsible enough to use it. In this case, this was not the usually suggested bolt-action single-shot often reccommended for such an event, but a full-house Number1 MkIII .303 Lee-Enfield WWII pattern military rifle, capable of killing a man at a quarter-mile, half a mile in very skilled hands. He's had an introduction to shooting it, both with lighter loaded practice ammo that's less likely to leave him with the flinch acquired by some whose first exposure is to a service rifle [another good reason for a rimfire trainer for that first choice] and with a few full-house military loads so that his old *obsolete* rifle receives the respect it deserves. That is not at all a toy, well beyond the scope of your interest, but I include the example to give you some idea of where you may be headed within a decade or so of where you're now beginning.

But FYI, even the kids' water pistols are under attack. Clearly there are those who want to see them raised as compliant little slaves, and in the case of my kid at least, I'm proud that they've not gotten what they might want to mandate for others. I wish you luck in achieving the same result with yours.

BTW, if you happen to run across a source for the old Tommygun squirt guns, kindly let me know.
