I've got a question for all the shootists and 2A guys out there...I've got a young (8 month old) son, and I want "Short Cut" to grow up right as regards firearms. The way I started, and as many of us did, was with toy guns. Many hours of my childhood were spent playing Soldier, Cops-n-robbers, and other games with my friends.

My dad never, however, hesitsted to teach me NEVER to point my toys at other people (well, him and mom, anyway.)

So, what I want to know is, are ANY companies still making toy guns that at least resemble reality? I cannot seem to find any decently-made ones on any toy shelves nowadays, as it appears the Succer Moms have succeeded in removing them from the toy stores.

Surely someone is bucking that trend out there, and wants to make a profit in this unserved market. If anyone has knowledge of one, or knows where to find such things, please respond with links and pics, if possible.

Please also, try to omit the "air-soft" guns, as those are a bit much for a pre-teen kid to handle (not to mention Dear 'ol Dad's wallet).

Oh, you can also use this thread to bash the Left over the head for stealing yet another good piece of childhood away, and by all means, share some of your more fun stories with us as well.

My best friend's folks tried that with him. By the time he was ten, the thing wouldn't shoot anything atg all, with all he put it through with the dry-firing and all.

Toy guns vs real gun (even BB guns):

My brother had to have BBs dug out of his hindend in the ER after his friend blasted him while he was in a tree while they were playing Army.

While your at the Walmart or Dollar Store pick up all those $5.98 DVDs also of John Wayne, Roy Rodgers and all the other good old westerns from the 50s. When my guys can't find their guns they make them out of Legos or KNexs, anything will do.

I thin bass pro or Cabellas makes a dbl barrel toy shotgun. With all the goodies that go with it. Too big to pack in a school bag and scare the liberals with yet cool enough to sit in a blind with dad all day waiting for game. OJT kewl tewl for chillins !

He will need a horse too. I wanted spring horses for them for Christmas two years ago. Nothing around here. Nada. I had to order Sheba and Trigger on line from of all places, New York :')

Well, my dad was a depression era kid. With four siblings, there wasn't a huge amount of money for the finer things. But, my dad took and cut an L-shape out of a piece of wood, say 4" handle by 1" width barrel and about a foot long.

Then, we cut an inner tube (from a Convair 580 aircraft tire) into 1" wide strips to make "rubber bands". Taking the loop of the rubber band we would tie knots in the rubber to shorten their length, increase their 'spring' and make them more 'lethal' - or at least more painful.

Dad would then take one of the rubber band loops and 'tie' a clothespin onto the back of the L-shaped piece of wood to use as a trigger (when the clothespin was released the rubber band would fly downrange and voila we would have a "Rubber Band Gun" of wondrous power and much better than the store bought toys because when you hit your opponent with the rubber band he (or she) knew they had been HIT!

Great character building game! Long on tactics of sneak and peak and short on range for a missle weapon. Heckuva lot of fun! (No head shots was the only rule! If you cry you don't get to play next time!)

My granddaughter gets the dollar store guns too:') My son called to make sure it wasn't for her boy cousins. She carries her Barbie on one arm and her rifle on the other.

Unfortunately, I don't. We chose to live in the OTHER great place to live in America, by the beach in Florida. Our house is in a close-knit neighborhood of cops and military folk 7 blocks from Mother Ocean.

It's VERY peaceful and pleasant, but the homes are close to each other.

I don't teach lessons about toys.

good point. On the one hand I abhor parents who try to teach their kids that guns are "icky"- on the other hand...they aren't toys.

On the other hand...many of us had race cars, big wheels, etc.

I don't have kids (to the best of my knowledge) so this hasn't come up. But it's certainly something to think about.

All guns are real! Let's treat them all the same and teach it so! Without regard to whether they're BB guns, .22's, or 45-70's.
