Toy Guns...
Me

Posted on 03/27/2004 6:53:16 PM PST by Long Cut

I've got a question for all the shootists and 2A guys out there...I've got a young (8 month old) son, and I want "Short Cut" to grow up right as regards firearms. The way I started, and as many of us did, was with toy guns. Many hours of my childhood were spent playing Soldier, Cops-n-robbers, and other games with my friends.

My dad never, however, hesitsted to teach me NEVER to point my toys at other people (well, him and mom, anyway.)

So, what I want to know is, are ANY companies still making toy guns that at least resemble reality? I cannot seem to find any decently-made ones on any toy shelves nowadays, as it appears the Succer Moms have succeeded in removing them from the toy stores.

Surely someone is bucking that trend out there, and wants to make a profit in this unserved market. If anyone has knowledge of one, or knows where to find such things, please respond with links and pics, if possible.

Please also, try to omit the "air-soft" guns, as those are a bit much for a pre-teen kid to handle (not to mention Dear 'ol Dad's wallet).

Oh, you can also use this thread to bash the Left over the head for stealing yet another good piece of childhood away, and by all means, share some of your more fun stories with us as well.

Thanks for any help offered!

Okay, anybody got anything? I want to raise the boy right. Playing with today's sissy toys, or handing him a video game ain't that.

You can get Red Rider bb rifles at Wal-Mart, but I'd hesitate until Lil Bit is at least six.

Some of the best (and cheapest) guns I ever had were wooden models my dad made in the garage.

I buy them for my grandkids at the dollars store. Walmarts carries cap guns too. The easiest way to get them put up around my house is to point them at someone, also.

I go a little crazy when my 10 y.o. son points a toy gun at me.

I go into lecture mode about "not pointing a gun at anything you don't want to shoot," blah, blah, blah...

I have the same reaction with his bow and arrow.

I prefer my kids have appropriate habits for real guns. I don't teach lessons about toys.

I made my own for a long time, myself. I've still got one, in fact. It's sort of an M16/FN-FAL/Thompson combination, if you can picture that.

might be wise to pick up a couple of them now while they are still available and relatively inexpensive and just store them in the closet until he is old enough to play with them.

Thanks, Annie. We live in a pretty close-spaced neighborhood, and we also have two cats who may not like Short Cut engaging in an arms race with them, so I think I'll confine his training on guns which actually fire something to the range, and a bit later.

Right now I just want him to have some fun while he's a kid like I did.

TOTALLY agree. I'd like to start that training EARLY, and on the toys before the BB guns, and then on to the real thing.
