Spike Lee: Larry Bird Most Overated Player in NBA History.
ESPN | 3/21/04 | CWB

Posted on 03/21/2004 9:34:19 AM PST by cwb

I just caught a clip of this on ESPN and couldn't help but notice the similarities between what Spike Lee said and that of what Rush said. Not only did he say Bird was the most overated player, he said that the "white media" would make you think that there were no great players before Larry Bird. I could tell that McKindry was uncomfortable with the story and it's going to be interesting to see how other's respond. Maybe we can get a comment from Isiah Thomas and Dennis Rodman who said that if Bird was a black man, he'd be just another average B-ball player.

The acting was good, but the film was lame. What Korean would call himself a n***er? The stereotypical treatment of the Italians was over the top.

Did Thomas say that? As I remember he was dragged, as the team captain, into the mess because of what Rodman said.

Spike Lee calling someone over-rated is like John Kerry calling someone two-faced.

How many of Spike Lee's films have broken even or better?

Oh, only one? Two if you count the short "She's Gotta Have It"?

Must be the racist White Man®.

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

I was a big Celtic fan during his career, white or black, he was one of the greatest....

I'm fine with recognizing individuals in team sports and individually he probably was among the best, but there is no debate that the Celtics with Larry Bird is one of the greatest teams of all time.

NO thanks...My plumber has made a bundle as well. Off me..

My home was built in 1907 and has been restored, renovated, refurbished, and updated four times. To maintain architectural integrity of the house it requires plumbers who can do it without being a wrecking crew.

My plumbing contractor has no need to buy shares. He has client list with near empty wallets now. Why play the markets when you have folks ripe for the plucking?

Note: This didn't appear to be an interview.

They are to be part of commercials that I believe ESPN is doing were celebs are commenting on their favorite NBA palyers and answering relative questions. As I said, Samuel L. Jackson was asked who he would give the ball to at cruch time...and he picked that overated Larry Bird:) While ESPN did have the guts to at least broadcast the remarks, they still took no position on it yet...and they still said more was to come, as this was only a teaser.

They all contributed to the success of the celtics.

"You must have seen the movie, PISTOL."

Never saw the movie, but I was an undergrad at LSU when Maravich was playing there. "Groanup" is correct.

One of those commercials even has Samuel L. Jackson endorsing Bird as the player he'd want with the ball in his hand when time was running down.

I was listening to the 1988 Hawks/Celtics Game 7 which came down to the most amazing two man shoot out down the stretch I have ever "witnessed". It was like everyone else was frozen with Wilkins and Bird swapping shots without missing.

It came down to who blinked first.

Dominique did....darn it.

From a google search:

May 22, 1988 Engages in classic fourth-quarter shootout with Hawks' Dominique Wilkins in Game 7 of Eastern Conference semis. Hits nine of 10 shots and scores 20 points to Wilkins' 16 in the final 12 minutes of Celtics' 118-116 win (though 'Nique finished with 47 to Bird's 34). ''The fourth quarter," McHale would say, "was like two people standing at arm's length and punching each other."

Here's what I sent them. I paraphrased some of what other Freepers have atated here.

I just caught a clip of Spike Lee on ESPN and couldn't help but notice the similarities between what Spike Lee said about Larry Bird and what Rush Limbaugh said about Donovan McNabb on your network.
He made some ridiculous comments about Larry Bird. Not only did he say Larry Bird was the most overated player, he said that the "white media" would make you think that there were no great players before Larry Bird. This is even more outrageous than Limbaugh's idiotic statements and I'm wondering what kind of response ESPN will have to this hate filled, race baiting, has-been film director.
I could tell that Mr. McKindry was uncomfortable with the story and it's going to be interesting to see how other's respond.

Maybe we can get a comment from Isiah Thomas and Dennis Rodman who said that if Bird was a black man, he'd be just another average basketball player.
I doubt that the gutless wonders that run ESPN will comment at all on Spike Lee's statements. Your probably afraid of being labeled 'racist' for questioning a black man on the subject of race.
Because, as I'm sure you all know, there is no such thing as a black racist. Only white people can be racist. Jesse Jackson tells me so.

Let's see how many sports reporters call up Bird and ask him for a reaction. Let's ask Bill Walton if he'll publicly trash Spike Lee the way Tom Jackson trashed Rush Limbaugh. I won't hold my breath.
If you won't respond to Spike Lee, then at least respond to me and answer this question:

What exactly is the difference between Spike Lee's comments and Rush Limbaugh's comments other than the race of the accuser and the accused?

Thanks for your attention.

I remember that Rodman made the initial remark, but I think that Thomas also stood by it.

How many Super Bowl rings did that QB from Philly have?

How many times did he MAKE it to the Superbowl?

"Spike Lee is one of the biggest race-baiters out there"

Yep and he's always in there stirring the pot. The good news is Spike is old news. He has already shown the kind of person he is. He's cried wolf too many times. So there is nothing new here.

Spike Lee is obsesed with race, no doubt about it. As far as being a racist, I don't know. If you think an entire group of people (white) are out to get you, and you hate or dislike them for it, does that make you a racist or just a paranoid?

It's a visious cycle. Spike complains that he would be more rich and famous if he was white. He's enourmously talented and could make popular movies of the Spielberg variety if he wanted, but he doesn't want to. If you don't want commercialism to polute your art, which I respect, don't complain becasue you're not as rich as Spielberg.

The real problem is a group of people that wake up every morning with the belief that every bad thing that happened to them the day before the result of white oppression.

Cornell West is another example. I like Dr. West for the most part. He's intelligent, articulate and has an engaging sense of humor. Until he gets on the '400 years of white oppression' kick. This is a guy that quit or got fired from Harvard and turned right around and got a job a Stanford. If that's oppression, I'll take a double helping, please. On the other hand he might think that if it were not for white oppression, he would be the President of Harvard. He might really believe that. I don't know what to call that type of thinking.
